Parent: Deerfield is the Columbia University of the Ivy League. Exeter/Andover is the Harvard/Yale. DA is compact, efficient, structured & fun. It has the hardest grading w severe grade deflation. There is only 1 GPA on a scale of 100. If you magically break 93, you are high honors. If you want the best odds of your child getting into an Ivy or Elite or Top LAC, Deerfield admit stats are up with the Top 5 feeders in the country. DA looks/feels like a country club, but the kids here work extremely hard unless you are shoo-in as recruited athlete or legacy. Regular Sit-down dinners force you to meet everyone in the school. Mandatory 1st or 2nd waiter duties teach humility. You get out of Deerfield, what you put into it because the resources are limitless. It's a tough place if your child needs coddling. But the best school if you want your kid to be an independent thinker and doer. The teachers and admin are unbelievably competent! It should be ranked 2nd/3rd but all these rankings are bunk... Parent: Our son went to Williston last year for a repeat junior year. Though his public-private high school in Vermont offered ample opportunities, the Covid experience had impacted his academic sequence and experience. He'd also come to realize Vermont's competition levels and potential for exposure didn't align with his aspirations for next-level play. Williston came well-recommended by a college friend whose son had been their for a few years, especially for its community. Even more than meeting our expectations for the sports, we were thrilled to see the community and academic experience energize him to new levels. He thrived with connections to students from around New England, the country, globe, and local community! We are thrilled with his academic interest and relationships. Parent: While sending my daughter to study abroad, I worried about her life and academics very much. However, the teachers and dorm parents in this school proved that my choice is correct! With the combined efforts, the school as a whole improved our daughters physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. This year, my kid is accepted by the Boston University, and I'm so proud of her! Junior: The Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School as an amazing school for those who want advanced education, and small, more intimate classes. PVCICS teaches all grades from K-12 with a range of immersion of the Chinese Mandarin Language. The highschool (9-12), takes honours classes in 9th and 10th grade, and the 11th and 12th graders are all enrolled in the IB Programme which teaches college level classes, along with college credit that can take of 1-2 years off your college degree. The class sizes are also very small and intimate, as the grade sizes range from 10-50 students total. Senior: My experience at Northampton High School has been a good one for sure. We have excellent teachers, especially in the history, science, and music departments. Everyone is very welcoming and accepting. It's about everything you want in a high school and has a wide spectrum of class offerings from AP to regular. Smith College is also close by and you can take some college classes there. My only complaint would probably be the grading policy which was implemented last year (2021) called standards-based grading. Parent: WOW, is all I can say about HCSS West! As a parent, we all want the best for our children but lets face it, it may not be achieved in a public school setting. For my child, it definitely wasn't and was looking for a new environment where he wasn't labeled any more. I did my research which showed both good & bad reviews. We went for a tour and talked to people. Since he was almost failing his core classes, he was miserable, and he fought every time he had to get ready for school, I figured what was the worst thing that could happen with the change? I just knew it was stressful and a miserable way to start every day. Day one, he came home and said he loved it which brought tears to my eyes. Never had we heard anything like that from his mouth! Never had we seen excitement to go to school! Never had we seen him make honor roll! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this to happen but I am so happy it did. Junior: The teachers here are pretty awesome. They’re all helpful and lenient, forming their own interesting curriculums that respond to student input. Students can turn in late work and come and go throughout class when they need a break. Most of the kids here are “weird,” in a cool way. Things are built to accommodate struggling students and I think it attracts kids who aren’t really interested in school, but there’s a spectrum of high achievers too. If your people are here, it can be a really awesome experience but certainly not everyone has friends and connections in our tiny class. The culture is lighthearted and trusting, I haven’t heard of any bullying since eighth grade. Four rivers is small and intimate, but few options in the social and extracurricular sense. Senior: Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School is a fantastic community with very friendly students and teachers. Parent: Leeds Elementary is an awesome school. The teachers are nurturing and really have helped my children grow into good human beings. The robotics program and general dedication to STEM is top notch. There is an outdoor garden, community commitment (students help clean the bike path etc.) and lots of innovative teaching. Senior: Smith Vocational was a great school for people who are planning on going out into the working field. The vocational teachers prepare you and help for you to find a job in what you are interested in. Considering you only have half as much academics the classes are taught to what we need to know. The teachers are friendly and want to see you succeed in life. The sports are not of huge importance at Smith Vocational because we are more hands on with a vocation. Senior: This school offers many opportunities for their student's including dual enrollment at Holyoke Community College and Elms College. The dual enrollment program pays for the college courses, books and provides transportation. The faculty and administrators form close bonds to their students and the environment is very supportive. Although Paulo offers many opportunities, students have to be proactive and seek them for themselves. The administration also encourages student's to use their voice and stand up for what they believe in. Students are able to lead walkouts and challenge current policies in our government. Parent: Both our sons have attended EBS, and it has been an outstanding experience. The staff care. The teachers are well trained. The academics are thoughtful and evolving. Our boys developed a great friendship in this nurturing atmosphere combining dorm life, sports, activities, and the classroom. The hillside setting is beautiful. The facilities are modern, well maintained, and the new science and arts building is a stunning example of form and function blended seamlessly into a wooded backdrop. Parent: This is one of the best treasures Northampton has to offer. The teachers are devoted, amazing, and really get to know the kids. One of the most exceptional things is that because it's such a cozy school, everyone truly knows everyone. Our two kids, who are in the younger grades, know the older kids and the teachers of the older grades. The school does a fantastic job planning all-school activities. One end-of-year favorite was when students in the older grades built an "arcade" out of recycled materials and the kids in the younger grades got to play all of the games.
