Parent: We have two daughters at Holton, both started in the 3rd grade and we are currently working our way through the middle school. We can not say enough good things about Holton. It is a warm loving environment that takes seriously its responsibility to shape its students to be compassionate, well rounded leaders. We see it in all aspects of what the school does. In fact, in every local, national, or global challenge that has occurred in our time there (of which there have been many) the schools response has always been exceedingly thoughtful, effective and in line with its values. Parent: Rochambeau follows the French curriculum, most classes are taught in French, but it is more an international school with IB options. Our daughters have had classmates from endless countries (around 70 represented). It prepares our children to live with others that have different cultures, languages, experiences, and religions ... in other words, it prepares them for their multicultural future. Studying at Rochambeau can be challenging at times, because of the high academic level of the French system, but this high amount of work will also depend on the (many) options that are offered. All of this is also balanced by a great School's sports teams program which is a fantastic experience for our children. Lastly, my husband studied there in high school in the early 90s and he still has many friends that he still sees regularly. Parent: After retaining an educational consultant and searching the entire DMV for the right independent school, we chose Stone Ridge. We were impressed with the school's sprawling campus and Aquatic Center, but fell in love with the all-girl environment and the school's ubiquitous message of empowerment. Our lower and middle school daughters have already formed wonderful friendships and a love of learning! Junior: Wootton has been a school that brings out the greatest level of competitive drive out of me. I have had so many chances in this school to stand out not only in front of my peers but also in the larger scopes of my community. The teachers at this school are consistently high in quality and seek to be communicative with their students. However this competitive drive in Wootton students does have some negatives. For one the school seems to have little school spirit because everyone is so focused on excelling to the point that no one cares about school patriotism or unity even among other students. Secondly the drive for competition can be extremely negative mentally, not just due to the pressure to succeed but because everyone is pushing that on you. Although you learn how to either manage or deal with it, the cost for academic success at schools like Wootton is your mental wellbeing and self confidence, which is definitely a negative for this school.... Parent: I can’t say enough great things about this school! Living in Virginia, I did not think attending a school in Maryland was even possible. The moment we stepped foot in CESJDS, I knew It was the perfect place for my son. It was risky switching schools his Junior year, but it was the best decision we made for him academically, spiritually, and socially. The teachers are very approachable and invested in the well-being of all students. There’s such a tight community and the students share a special bond. My son loves the small class sizes and the close relationships he has made. He loves starting his day with morning Minyan and learning in a pluralistic setting with his Jewish peers. I can go on and on about how this school has impacted my son in the best ways possible. Senior: Going to the Academy of the Holy Cross, I’ve discovered who I am. I loved growing and learning with other young women and sharing different life/culture/ religious experiences with one another. One great memory that I have from Holy Cross is our Holy Cross days! Huge competition between all the grades from 9-12. At the end of the day we all come together as a community and close with a prayer. Even though traditions at Holy Cross do change I hope that everyone’s energy is in the same place! That is something I hope would never change. One thing I would like to see more from Holy Cross are more presentations and celebrations about people cultures. Senior: It has excellent teachers and faculty staff! The visual arts program, the music programs, and counsellors specifically are all fantastic. The teachers are knowledgeable, helpful, and very experienced, as well as easy to talk to. Quarantine was difficult for every school, and there were some bumps here and there, but it was always known that teachers and counsellors were frequently available if you needed any help. Obviously dealing with loud and messy teenagers can be difficult and frustrating (the hallways can get a bit crowded, and there are some particularly rowdy students), but not any more or less than any other high school. Senior: The Barrie School is a very diverse high school in terms of the student population. The diversity between faculty and administration is definitely lacking. Since the staff is not very diverse students of color often experience many microaggressions. The school's academics are solid because they have a creative curriculum that uses a project-based learning approach. The student-to-teacher ratio is quite small which allows students to truly get one-on-one attention if they need it. Since the student body is so small the school is not great for socializing and activities. In terms of college prep, they have a specific college counselor that helps students with the college process throughout their high school career. Parent: During covid-19 my child's school was giving out a bunch of materials new Chromebooks, supplies, math books. They are already starting to go back to school. Also, they just finished building the school last year! It is great a school the teachers are amazing and my kids are getting great grades.
