Senior: Most Magnet peers are quite nice and welcoming. The clubs are quite welcoming and school spirit is competitive at Magnet. Because it is a smaller high school than others in the area, students are able to connect more with the teachers. The average student teacher interaction is quite casual and the teachers do listen to you. However, the workload is tough because the teachers tend not to communicate with one another about assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects. Junior: There is a genuine care for the wellbeing of students at our school, and it contributes to a great environment in which student-faculty relations are extremely positive. The beautiful campus creates a great vibe for students and when the weather is kind, the general mood of the campus feels enlightened. Every teacher tries their hardest to make sure that each student is fully able to reach competency in any subject. While there are so many positives, the workload can sometimes be inconsistent, and some weeks are incredibly stressful and difficult, yet others can be a walk in the park. Another slightly inconsistent facet of a Porter-Gaud education is the class selections; often times incredibly gifted students are placed in on-level classes with students that do not share similar academic ambitions, while others who are less deserving can be placed in Honors or AP classes.... Alum: I've just completed my senior year and been at other schools before this one; this one has to have the best learning and friendly environment out of all of them. Most teachers were passionate about what they taught and understood if I had asked them for some help out of class via email or in person. A big issue with this school is how they handle big events. It was always difficult for me to ever know any information before these events or for other students to be unless they were directly involved. Senior: Great Educational Experience! As a student, I was able to prepare for college through rigorous academic coursework. The ability to take Honors and AP Classes allowed me to earn a weighted grade point average that is impressive when applying for colleges. By taking advantage of the course offered through the Center for Advanced Studies, I was able to take medical coursework that prepared me for my future nursing degree. Wando truly develops the whole student by offering advanced studies in culinary science, engineering, auto shop, cosmetology, business, and media technology. Junior: At our school, we truly have the best of both worlds through high levels of academics and athletics. Students who participate in sports train for part of the day and attend school the other half. We have rigorous training and academics. Our school offers honors and Dual Enrollment classes through our local Technical College. It's a great way to earn college credits while in high school. Parent: USL is what education should be and feel like in the 21st world we live in today - rigorous, challenging, innovative, relevant, safe, positive, and a community! My daughter has been at USL from the 3rd grade to the 8th grade. I've seen her and the kids around her start out kind, curious, and bright, but the school develops beyond that - into powerful advocates for themselves, motivated and driven, socially aware and knowledgeable of the diversity around them, and prepared to be future leaders. And, I can't say enough about the excellence that comes from the teachers, staff, administrators, and older students who model kindness, achievement, perseverance, and support. Alum: I attended Montesorri Community School of Charleston from preschool though sixth grade. At that time, the middle school had not yet been created. I graduated nine years ago, so this review is dated, but I've only heard great things since then. I attended the school before the new building was built. It was a very small and tight knit community. Although the school has expanded, I've been told that this is still mostly true. I loved the school so much. The Montessori element was what made it so great. It's too much to explain here, but I highly recommend independently researching the Montessori method of teaching. Alum: The administration knows 99% of all the students by name. There are always parents at the school volunteering in numerous areas. Teachers are always in contact with parents, formulating ways to help the students achieve their potential. A majority of the faculty and staff have been at the school for numerous years. There is not a lot of turnover. At the end of the year, the grade level teachers get together and discuss each student who is moving up, and choose, as a group, who they feel would be the best teacher for each student, so they will have the best chance at success.
