Freshman: My experience at SHS was pretty good this year as a freshman! Having this be my first year, I was pretty scared and a bit hesitant to continue the next 4 years at this huge school. But Stevenson is a super welcoming place, with amazing teachers, staff and students. They have this thing called freshman orientation, which is the day before school starts. A bunch of our juniors and seniors come in to guide us through the school, and answer questions we have. These same Fmp leaders are the main people for advisory, which is another program assisted to help freshmen meet new people. Advisory takes place during half our lunch, and in my opinion was pretty fun, we played games, did activities and I met a lot of close friends in it. I didn’t mind advisory, but I know a lot of other people didn’t like the fact that it was a whole year, so maybe a suggestion would be making it only for the 1st semester so we can have full lunch 2nd semester. Senior: North Shore is by no doubt an amazing school. While it is small and a bit sheltered, the school culture promotes independence and hard work in their students through rigorous courses and workloads. The school also requires its students to participate in the performing arts and athletics, which allows many students to be forced to develop their leadership skills and personality. MANY of the teachers are of high quality, compassionate, and care about developing relationships with their students. The humanities department is significantly more developed and better than that of STEM. STEM classes only prove to be worth it if it is an AP or required course. I wish North Shore would do better at is encouraging their students to take higher-level courses. The administration will usually discourage their students from taking AP classes based on their previous courses, and make it seem like the students aren't capable of taking all AP classes if they want to, nor do they even allow them to.... Parent: I am not going to sugar coat this. I was skeptical of Woodlands at first. It is small, tucked away in Lake Forest, and single gender. Maybe this was an environment that was too protected, sheltered, and "hand holding" for a young woman in high school? And while it is small, the experience has been anything but "too reserved or safe". The school is diverse and composed of students from the City, the burbs, and international locations that span the socio-economic spectrum. The academics are great and exceed expectation. If a student seeks challenge, the answer is always yes! If a student tries to back away from their potential, a teacher is on it. Students appreciate that WA will not let potential go unfulfilled. Girls learn to advocate & take pride in their accomplishments. Upon graduation they leave WA self-sufficient & confident women. They are ready to define their unique place in society. Alum: Northridge was a once in a lifetime experience for me. I walked in the halls as a young boy not knowing what to expect and came out as a man. That includes knowing my goals in life, learning my faith, as well as having opportunities set up for a well rounded future. The basketball program was something that will always have a spot in my heart. The brotherhood between past, former, and future players isn’t even describable. Coach Rey helped me in so many ways on and off the court. I’m now a basketball manager at the University of Louisville, a Division 1 school! Senior: Loyola Academy is a great school as long as you can foot the bill and desire Jesuit values in education. Loyola’s strengths are its athletics and college readiness. Athletics are a huge part of the culture at Loyola. Most students participate in at least one sport during their time here. There is a wide variety of sports to choose from and most a “no cut” freshman year which allows all to participate. Students also get a helping hand through their college process during all the steps. No matter the student, Loyola will find a college for them. Loyola does have some drawbacks. While it is getting better, because of the steep tuition and location, diversity is low. The music and arts are also neglected in favor in sports. They are underfunded and not many kids participate. A new theater is being built, so in the future, the program might have more life in it. Overall though, Loyola is a great school as long as you can pay the steep tuition. Go Ramblers!... Parent: We are strong supporters of Regina. We have a junior now and an incoming freshman. It's a strong school with an outstanding student-teacher ratio. Our daughter is a very high academic achiever and she is challenged and thriving. We have found the administration and teachers to be very supportive. Regina places a very high premium on leadership development for the girls. That was a strong selling point for us. They have helped our daughter come out of her shell and she has had terrific leadership opportunities. Finally, the school has a major capital campaign that has refreshed and improved the facilities. Parent: My 3 children received a phenomenal education at Rondout! It's a K-8 School with an amazing staff and community. The student to teacher ratio allows for truly differentiated and individualized instruction for all students. The school has a strong community and family feel. Each child is treated as an individual and has his or her own learning plan. My children are doing great things at Libertyville High School because they received such a strong foundation at Rondout. Parent: DPM West has provided my children with an outstanding education and has effectively prepared them to succeed in high school. The District continues to provide incredible programming, curriculum, and facilities. The new Makerspace, Haskins Center (library), classroom lighting, furniture, and entry vestibules show their commitment to student safety, STEM learning, and keeping students engaged throughout the day. The project-based curriculum also helps prepare my children for high school and beyond by teaching them how to work in groups, collaborate, ask insightful questions, and learn how to figure out solutions vs. just answers. DPM West isn't very diverse, but the school goes to great lengths to expose the students to diverse perspectives and ideas. One of the District's key objectives is to hire and retain great teachers and they definitely do that!
