Junior: If you want to get ahead of the college crowd, Benjamin Franklin High School should be on your list. With rigorous courses and a plethora of AP courses to choose from, this school has got you covered. However, the prevailing mood from both students and teachers is usually depressive as a result, although teachers try their hardest to make classes engaging and fun. Since the school is public, you get all sorts of characters and backgrounds in one place, meaning you are certain to find a friend (the Franklin Summer Institute is a good way to start the school year off with friends!). On the flip side, it's not uncommon to not encounter half of the staff/student population until your junior year, so if a close-knit community is a must for you, avoid Ben Franklin at all costs. Senior: Newman is a small private school with a high tuition cost, and because of that, diversity is lacking. But that comes with the territory, and you would face this issue at any private school in Nola. That being said, as a woman of color, I have always felt safe and cared for here, as they does their best to encourage diversity and inclusion. (let it be known that POC students at Newman have very different experiences and the same can't be said for everyone) On the other hand, the school offers amazing opportunities and great academics for students. It's a community in every sense of the word, helping students build relationships and achieve academic excellence with the guidance of their teachers. Each student can feel individually supported and inspired to do their best, and even though Newman isn't perfect, the positives out weigh the negatives by a lot, and compared to other schools in New Orleans, I'm confident in saying that this is the best. Sophomore: I'm in my 5th year at Haynes and I love it! The teachers genuinely care and form real connections with their students. The work is hard, but it really does prepare us for college and exam season. Our school offers many AP and College-level courses, like engineering through LSU curriculum. Academic clubs, like mock trials and academic games, and STUCO are the only clubs that are really active by the second semester. If you are like me and don't like academic clubs, then there aren't many opportunities to bulk up your college resume. Junior: As a student that attends Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology academy, I believe that this school and its staff put education at the forefront of everything they do. Since it is a science and technology school, there are ample resources that can propel its students to excellence when it comes to science and technology matters. When it comes to extracurricular activities, PFTSTA funds the clubs by having different fundraisers specifically made for certain clubs. Sports is definitely not a priority, although they just built a new gym for basketball games and volleyball games. Freshman: I've been going to this school for 12/13 years now, and I'm in the 9th grade. This school has been an amazing experience! I have had fun making friends with the girls in my grade. The best part is the traditions, such as conge (faire), may crowning, and cache cache (hide and seek), that come with being a Sacred Heart student. If you plan on attending this school, it would be an amazing choice. The teachers are amazing! Senior: Jesuit is a school that demands excellence out of its students from day one. Because of these high expectations, the work load is something that every student has to adjust to fairly quickly to avoid falling behind. What I most appreciate about attending Jesuit High School is that this school taught me more than just lessons in the classroom. I was able to learn great organizational and time management skills. I also learned how to meet new people everyday since the average class size is about 250. What I would change about Jesuit is the lack of opportunity for students to express themselves at school. A lot of schools have a uniform, this is not what I am referring to. Senior: Mount Carmel is such an amazing school. The environment is extremely inclusive and loving. I know that I am truly cared about at the school. Senior: I had a great experience at De La Salle! I loved the culture at school and the people around me, it truly felt like i belonged and that everybody fit in and had their place. Alum: As a recent alum, I have been catching myself thinking about my time at Ursuline Academy very frequently because of the wonderful memories I have made there. I attended Ursuline from Toddler 2 to Senior year. Now, as a college student, I feel as if I excelled in my academics, extracurricular activities, and social life because of the excellent way Ursuline prepared me for life after high school. Parent: I love the opportunity for my grandchildren to learn a different language. ISL is a top 10 language immersion school, kindergarten through 8th grade, average size classrooms with 2 teachers each. Along with the core subjects, Art, Circus Arts, Music, and PE are included. They have a good after care program. In the morning there is carpool dropoff, but no carpool pickup in the afternoons, so I would like that to change. Bus service can be provided depending on your location. There are several campuses that teach Spanish, French, and other languages, teachers are from various countries. It's an amazing school! Senior: New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) is a wonderful place for students from all over the New Orleans area to come and express themselves via their prefered art form. I chose Theatre Design, and I truly believe and can say with 100% certainty that I would not have gotten the training I did if I would have gone to any other school in my area. I am dedicated to this school because I live over an hour away and I still choose every morning to get up at 5:30 to come to school, knowing I could easily just go to a different school. Senior: Pretty good school but also very tedious. There are some teachers that gives an awful amount of schoolwork, but having good time management and actually doing your work will get you through. Freshman to Junior year were pretty chill, but reaching Senior year was when things started to get very tedious, especially when you had to focus on both personal and school life. Students were well-behaved but a lot of them, mainly freshmen, always get caught vaping in the bathroom. I advise that you do these activities at your own personal time because it’s incredibly annoying when the bathrooms are closed at certain times. The school definitely needs a lot of improvements like being a specific race to enter school because of “racial ratio” (don’t know why that’s a thing), how education supposed to work (take Finland for ex.), and making a better schedule (not that hard). Parent: This is a wonderful school. The teachers are second to none. My children have attended for several years and we would not move them anywhere else. The teachers have been very responsive, their education is way ahead of target. The teachers do more with less. They are extremely engaging and creative. My kids love school. There could always be more diversity. The children are all taught to be kind from a young age and socially rewarded for that kindness and this shows in their interactions. The teachers 100% care about each child. They are fun and fresh with the children. The administration has always been responsive. I would not have my children anywhere else. They absolutely deserve their blue star status.
