Junior: My experience at Downtown Business Magnet High School has been very transformative. I learned a lot about myself and accomplished things I thought I never would have. There were many times where I was bewildered in my classes but my teachers would always find ways to help me understand the work better. The school is remarkable in every way, but there are some things I would change about it. I think I can speak for everyone when I say they would be happier to be in a much bigger campus/building. More windows, less clutter in hallways, more tables and places to eat outside, a field for sports, and just overall vitamin D from natural sunlight! We are now starting to go back to school in a few weeks but there's still a virus going around in the world. The fact that there are no windows in the building is a high risk to students because there is no ventilation circling around so the germs are all contained in the small building. Parent: My daughter started in public school. The teachers and kids were disengaged, building Instagram followers seemed like a big goal of kids. We transferred to Ambassador where she developed meaningful relationships, had access to teachers who also wanted the kids to learn and critically think (not just memorize and regurgitate information). In a world where sats/acts seem to be disappearing, my child can differentiate herself through dual enrollment/early college. The Harkness method helps my child use critical thinking and communication skills as part of her learning experience. Parent: Our child has been at Larchmont since kinder and has thrived. He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Most kids eat the (optional) lunch prepared in the Fairfax kitchen and is SO good. At Selma, our child has delved deeper into academics and developed new interests like government and digital media in clubs. High School Freshman: At Miraleste Intermediate School there are some wonderful aspects and others are not so wonderful. We have a very supportive staff and student body, however our teachers lack the passion in their profession. I believe that if a teacher loves to teach, a student would love to learn. Unfortunately, most teachers at Miraleste lack interest in their subject, therefore creating a negative learning environment. Parent: My oldest transferred here in 3rd grade right before the pandemic hit - we left UCLA Lab School and have really loved the teachers, staff and leadership of the school. The SEL curriculum and Cool Tools reminds me a lot of UCLA Lab's approach -but without the tuition. Last year my other son started kindergarten. He's young for his grade so we decided to repeat kinder and got full support of the faculty and staff to do this - they really listened to us and allowed us to lead what we knew was best for our child. The Faculty is also very diverse which was important to us - we were looking for a school with strong BIPOC leadership and CWC is exactly that - amazing folks for my kids to look up to and aspire to be like - that look like them. One thing I wish there were more of, is the arts - but we are working on it - it's a community with so much room to create and imagine a future. Senior: My experience at POLAHS has not only been amazing but also super educational. POLAHS offers amazing educational programs that are completely free to student an example of this is the CTE programs that include construction, welding, Marine trans, Video production, Graphic design, and Photography. These programs give students a chance to get a head start in a career that they might want to peruse in there future and also helps them become certified in. POLAHS also has amazing teachers that really listen and care for their students. With the smaller class sizes this really allows teachers to have more control and educational time for their students. Senior: As a current student who has attended Lake Balboa College Prep since 6th grade, I can say that this school is different from a typical high school. Starting off, the school starts from kindergarten and follows up to twelfth grade. I’ve attended this school since middle school, and now graduating from here next year. Lake Balboa has provided me with great opportunities. They offer college courses, Ap classes, clubs, and sports! Sure it’s a small school, therefore everyone knows each other which I love because it makes us feel like family. The community itself is welcoming and the staff is friendly.
