Senior: It is hard to put into words the incredibly positive impact that this school has had on my life. Coming in as an awkward freshman, I was greeted by a welcoming community of intelligent, funny, and hard-working students and teachers that have supported me since day one. Through the most amazing sports teams, clubs, organizations, and even just academic classes, I have made memories and formed relationships (with students and teachers alike) that will last me a lifetime. Now as a senior in my fourth year at the school, I feel confident in myself as a learner, friend, teammate, leader, and person, and so much of this is thanks to Nobles. Starting with assembly in the morning, and ending with "Dogs on three, one, two, three, DOGS!" at the end of practice in the afternoon, the constant infectious energy makes it a joy for me to go to school each day. Junior: I LOVE CA! As a current day student, I don’t have many regrets about my choice to go CA. The academics are manageable but rigorous, super friendly community, and most teachers really put in an effort to connect with students. CA is centered around common trust basically meaning that we all have trust in each other and put effort to foster a community. With that said, that is the case about 90% of the time. I’ve had a couple negative experiences with teachers and students who simply just don’t adhere to the common trust. For instance, I’ve a couple of teachers who just didn’t put in any effort to support me or my unique learning. Other than those few experiences, I have nothing but positive feedback for CA.... Parent: My son recently graduated from MX and his experience was a game changer for him. Parent: Our son started as a 9th grader in the fall of 2020. The school has exceeded our very high expectations. Even with the ongoing pandemic, the school has managed to provide an academically rigorous and caring/supportive community. The teachers are extraordinary. They know our son very well and truly care about his academic AND personal and spiritual development. His academic transition from public school has been seamless. We are confident the education he is receiving will prepare him very well for college. In this uncertain time with so much angst in society, I can not think of a better community for our son to be part of. On a daily basis the faculty and administration communicate their time tested wisdom that allows him to help filter out the current angst and noise that surrounds us all. Senior: Yeah, Lexington high school is stressful. Not necessarily because of our academics (though many of our teachers are Ivy/t20 grads) but because of the students. We’re very competitive, and there’s an external drive/stress culture depending on who you hang out with. It’s very common for us to send most of our class (even the “popular” and “slacker” kids) to top schools for their major. We have no school spirit but that never mattered to me. Not many people attend football games or care about traditional high school popularity, which is refreshing. And our school is so big that you will definitely find your crowd. Finally: yes, we’re known for our bad mental health, as expected from a top high school. But many teachers are really understanding of your circumstances, so don’t be afraid to reach out to them! Alum: I went to Newton for 8 years and truly loved it. I made my greatest friends for life from the small and tight-knit community. A highlight for me personally were the sports teams because I played 3 seasons and really enjoyed the competitive spirit, yet loving family energy of the teams. The academics were rigorous from day one and now as a college student I am prepared and confident, especially in writing and history. My teachers, too many to name, turned out to be some of the most transformative people in my teenage years and I learned so much from them. The NCDS traditions - conge, gouter, retreats - are unlike any other and I will cherish them forever. Parent: When looking for schools for my son, I wanted the strong academics, but I also wanted an environment that fostered independent thinking and discovery; an increasingly difficult combination to find given the climate of education and expectation these days. However, Beaver delivered it all. The core skills being taught are the same as what other schools are teaching, but Beaver does it in a way that draws the students in to ask questions, test their own ideas (knowing that it is ok, and expected, for some ideas to flop), and explore topics as they apply to real life. AP classes are not offered and that is a huge pro, not a con. By taking them out of the mix, students have space in their schedules to try classes that pique their interests...Neuroscience and Theories of Justice to name a couple. Parent: Our family has been a part of the Lexington Christian Academy community for five years. Our child is in the Upper School, is thriving and loves LCA. 2020 has been a year like no other and LCA has risen to the challenge to provide an excellent education. When the pandemic hit, LCA was able to pivot to online learning within a couple of weeks. The administration and teachers worked tirelessly to create a learning experience as close to what is provided in-person at LCA. The technology, support, consistent communication to all parents and students was in place. This school year, LCA has been in-person with some remote days. The transition between the two has been seamless. LCA has taken all the necessary precautions to allow students and staff to be in-person at LCA. Senior: I am a current Newman School Senior and I have loved being apart of this community! It really does feel like family. Everyone from the students to the teachers really do want to see us succeed. The school offers several clubs and creates such an easy space to start your own and add to the benefit of the community. Being located right in the city is another major bonus. We have easy access to several forms of transportation and when the weather is nice, often times students go and have lunch outside. Sometimes teachers take us outside for class too which is always nice. The school is also very flexible with students schedules who have high demand extra curricular activities outside of school. Which is nice for students who would otherwise only have the option of home school and don't necessarily want to do that. Junior: I’ve always despised school, growing up I bounced around from school to school and I could never find the right fit. All my life I have been surrounded by teachers who thought boring lessons straight out of a book and clearly showed a lack of inspiration and effort when it came to teaching. Just as I was about to bow my head and surrender to the education system, it was CM that revived my thirst for knowledge. Despite the fact that I have only been enrolled for a year CM has provided me with an experience like no other. At CM I feel like that teachers believe in me and care about me. Parent: The staff responsiveness (teachers, administration, counselors, etc) was amazing throughout middle school. They have a wonderful way of encouraging independence & self-advocacy in students & we saw our student grow tremendously in this respect. The teachers make themselves accessible. The school counselor was phenomenal, both caring & proactive. The hard part was social, the students tend to segregate themselves over time, mostly racially. It's also challenging for anyone with cultural differences and for the socially awkward. More student & parent programs encouraging speaking out against bullying may help prevent some of the bullying and cliques inherent in middle school. More educational programs about diversity and acceptance may help too, given the relative lack of diversity in the student population.
