Freshman: As a rising sophomore at Miss Hall's next year, I can confidently say that this school is an amazing community, full of wonderful people. I spent my freshman year here and it was everything I needed it to be and more. This school helped me gain more confidence, explore sides of me that I hadn't utilized as much before, and nurture my passions. I met some of my closest friends and formed relationships that I will carry with me as long as I can. I participated in a bunch of activities, leadership opportunities, and sports and ensembles. This year has been also great for me academically, as I enjoyed my classes and learned much in various areas of study. I acquired skills and abilities that help me organize, plan and lead, and I have grown a lot. Alum: Many schools invoke the idea of community, but few really create an environment in which it is possible. Buxton offers this to a very diverse group of young people, year after year. It's quite astonishing, really- it changed my life. Before Buxton, I was pretty adrift among 3000 other high school students in NYC- I needed a smaller environment. At Buxton, I wanted to actually do my homework, because it meant I could talk about things I cared about with teachers who excited me. I wanted to reconsider some of my choices, because I could see how I was affecting the people around me. I wanted to participate in music, in art, in soccer! Nothing was "busywork." Every dimension of life-interactions in the dining room, work program, dorm relationships, the art studio- and every part of the day is valued as part of the curriculum. Works Here: I work at The Darrow School and my experience has been amazing. The curriculum is top-notch, with faculty and staff that are committed to the students and each other. The school culture is warm, respectful and embracing of everyone. Students are engaged, encouraged and supported in all facets of boarding school life for a well-rounded experience that promotes healthy socio-emotional, academic and physical development. Darrow has amazing facilities and program offerings for a small, independent boarding school. From our top-notch performing arts center for music, theater and media engineering, to the he Kurtz Innovation Center, where students explore new technologies, to The Living Machine™, the country's first ecological wastewater treatment center located in a high school, to name a few. Senior: Mt Greylock has been a great school experience. I have enjoyed both the social atmosphere and the academics. We have a great support system with Williams College. There is a large variety of Honors and AP Courses that help you prepare for college. Senior: Berkshire Arts & Technology Charter School (BART) is a very small school, which comes with advantages and disadvantages. There aren't a lot of extracurricular activities, so if sports or school events are important to you, you may want to consider other options. BART also doesn't have the resources to offer a huge variety of classes, so while you aren't left completely without choices, those choices will be limited. However, BART's small size turns it into a tight-knit community, both within and across grade levels. All schools have a few students who act without thinking, but BART is overall a very safe and welcoming environment. The small classes allow teachers to put more focus on each individual student, and the teachers care about their students. The curriculum is challenging, to the point where a couple of students usually leave each year, but if you can push through, BART does a great job of preparing you for college and beyond. 4/5 stars...
