Parent: Our family unexpectedly found ourselves seeking a private school for our children last year. We were hesitant to start an independent school search as we were concerned the atmosphere would feel elitist and stray from our down-to-earth values. We were blown away by MPA, and our concerns were left at the door. MPA is the most inviting and warm environment, with the perfect blend of challenging academics and a nurturing approach. Once starting the school year, our children were immediately seen as a part of the community and valued for their strengths while the fantastic teachers honed in on their growth areas. Parent: Providence Academy is a school like no other! When we chose to send our daughter there for kindergarten, we knew it was a special place. Now that we are almost at the end of the school year, it is hard to put into words just how special it is! The love, faith, virtues, and knowledge that are poured into the children sets Providence apart. Our daughter has learned so much academically, and even more importantly, she has learned to go to Jesus first and has felt loved and supported by her teachers every day. Parent: This school is amazing - the teachers, administrators, and students. My son has been attending for 6 years. It is very structured - and can seem overwhelming (imagine being spoken to all day in a foreign language)! But, my son is happy. I think the teachers have high expectations, but are very nurturing and they provide additional help if the student is struggling academically (I know from personal experience). I am so impressed by the dedication of the teachers - they are always available and willing to communicate and partner on plans specific to individual students. With any immersion program, the first couple years are a struggle, as students may fall behind mainstream schools - however, by 5th grade, my son is scoring well above average. Junior: Great River School is a Montessori and Is great at encouraging students to take risks, make new friends, and be independent. The curriculum is hands-on and engaging. The teachers and staff are all extremely kind and are very understanding of our needs as students for extensions and different requirements on work. I could walk up to any student in my grade and have a great conversation. The building is old and always seems to be either too hot or too cold which is not so fun. Parent: ISLA has been such an incredible school for our children. Our kids love going to school, the staff is incredibly loving, nurturing and skilled. I’m so impressed with the IB curriculum and the reflection on being an engaged and caring global citizen. I also am so impressed with how strong my daughters’ Spanish has become! Junior: Teachers are knowledgeable are care deeply about students. A very substantial amount of teachers have graduated from Maranatha and have returned to teach. Although they don't get paid nearly as much as they would at a public high school, the teachers find this work as a form of ministry and I have never heard of such love for their students. I have never felt unsafe in this school. They have multiple armed security guards at all times during school and a few stay after hours. I am taking PSEO and am a semester in at Bethel University and feel extremely prepared for every class I'm taking. This school is very academically rigorous and definitely prepared me for college. I've heard about very deep bullying problems at other schools and it seems commonplace in our society but never in my nine years of attendance at Maranatha Christian Academy have I experienced bullying, it's just not in the culture. Parent: My second child is now coming through TG and it has been a wonderful experience. I will say it best in that TG offers a "no distraction" learning environment where it is "cool" to get good grades. The teachers are 100% invested in these students, go the extra mile and will make sure your kid does not fall in the cracks. Every teacher knows every student's name. It is impressive. I have a highly academic child and a child that requires more attention and TG is a great fit for both. Private school does not guarantee any outcome but it sure improves your odds! Parent: We have our third child now at Hill-Murray and each has had different, but positive experiences at HM. Our oldest, a daughter, focused on volleyball and she adored many of the teachers and was challenged by all of them. She still talks about and has stayed in touch with one of her seventh grade teachers. Now she is a confident, verbal, socially-conscious second year law student and doing very well. Our second child, a son, snuck onto the football team after persuading my wife that he would just be a kicker. He was soon a starting receiver scoring touchdowns and enjoying the "ultimate team game" on Friday nights. Now a junior at Creighton, last year he came home and delivered a speech to the entire school body about what being a Pioneer meant to him. Our third child, a sophomore boy, is having a great time and excelling academically, athletically, and socially, despite covid. Junior: Chesterton is the best! Regarding academics, I find school to be challenging but super enjoyable. We have normal classes like math and lit, but there's also a big focus on the arts and such. Many of our classes are discussion-based, and the ones that aren't still end up in important conversations. The teachers are great at explaining whatever you need (especially random/off-topic questions/philosophical problems). They definitely like to pile on the homework, though! Regarding the community: practically everybody, from the staff to the students, is Catholic, and discussions about the faith seep into just about everything. We have daily mass (epic!) with confession available after, theology class, grade-level retreats, the Handmaids next door, and the adoration chapel and church to pray in before, during, or after school. Senior: I deeply enjoyed my time at southwest. Many courses were offered, and I was able to pursue my academic interests at a high level. I loved all the teachers and support staff, and admired how COVID safe our school tried to be. My teachers were helpful and supportive, and loved to discuss what we were learning, and not simply lecture. My peers were often driven and kind, and there was a level of diversity within the school that rounded out my education. On the other hand, I do not think that the new administration appropriately values the arts, as they attempted to cut critical departments such as guitar education and dance. Having these art programs are something that gives balance to an educational world otherwise so focused in STEM and business. Middle School Student: I am a student in 6th grade as I'm writing this and I recommend this school but I would start early so if your coming here at my age knowing no german than thats may be a bad idea because it a new language were fluent in and you wouldn't know one word. If you like a Waldorf style of school this is probably not the school for you as here we do do tests and focus on academics but do events as in service learning, which I'm in, today we went to an event called WE DAY a empowerment non-profit organization to make the world better with our youth. Our school is very very very accepting of all cultures and backgrounds. If your happy with who you are then were fine with it. The one thing is are school is not that diverse..... were mostly white..... but where ale exerting and racism is not tolerated at our school. We encourage to feel welcome. Senior: It’s such an excellent school with a good supportive environment to learn in. It’s a special place because the arts classes are specialized and catered to your specific track. I’m in the musical theatre track and so far I have learned something new every single year! Whether it’s viewpoints, grid work, character development, or even just playing theatre games there is always something to learn. The academics are challenging especially if you’re taking AP or Advanced classes. My most challenging class was AP Biology, it made me work hard and take time to really develop an understanding of the material, science is my favorite subject! The only downside to SPCPA is that we have no sports and a very limited selection of student run clubs. If you care about dances and sports and the “traditional” high school experience, it may not be the school for you.
