The school feels like a family, especially as you learn alongside your peers with smaller classes, diverse clubs, and challenging sports. The teachers take the time to get to know each one of their students and make time for individual tutoring sessions. When those teachers don't have time, McDonogh has an excellent peer-to-peer tutoring program to help students in need. Parent: Our daughter started at Garrison Forest in 5th grade (switched from a Baltimore County Public School) and we wish we moved her sooner! She is currently in 6th grade and has blossomed into a wonderful student, a passionate leader, and a caring community member. Garrison offers the most caring, encouraging, welcoming and, simultaneously, academically rigorous experience. Every person on that campus wants our daughters to succeed. The education is geared specifically toward empowering and encouraging girls to take changes in science, math, arts, sports, and anything else you can think of. Parent: My daughter has been going to GCS for 7 years ago and is moving on to the Middle School next year. She is thriving academically and socially. The academics are challenging, but not overwhelming. She has become an exceptional writer and has fallen in love with STEM and the fine arts. Junior: I enjoyed Century High School because it was a very welcoming environment the minute I stepped into the building. Coming from middle school to high school changed my perspective drastically. It was okay to be different and it was okay to be smart. I am a shy person and coming to a school with over 1000 kids made my anxiety skyrocket but the people there helped me find my place. One thing I would tell anyone who is just coming in to high school is that everyone finds a place with the right people and the right teachers so do not be afraid of those seniors running through the halls they are actually very sweet! Another tip would be to get involved, it is nerve-racking at first but it is so worth it. Junior: Attending Gerstell Academy has proven to be immensely taxing on both my academic brain and emotional brain. I began attending this K-12 school in Pre-Kindergarten and have been there ever since. The allure of college preparation and skill development intrigued my parents enough to pay the concerningly high prices. Overall, it is a small school which has hindered my growth as a social person and prevented me from branching out in school. However, the reason I give such a high rating is because I know I am prepared for college. If I take away the stress and emotional distress that the school has caused me, I am left with maturity beyond my years, the drive to work to my fullest potential, and a strong sense of community that I have been able to develop over the years.... Senior: I actually really enjoyed going to Liberty. The teachers here are, for the most part, really wonderful people who genuinely care about their students. The teachers are all wonderful, the sports teams are pretty good, and overall the students aren't too bad either. Though I'm not blaming the school for that. Unfortunately, when I tried to participate in several extracurriculars, I was told no because certain sports refused to compromise. Having to pick between two of my interests was not very fun, and at that point it was too late to decide. I was given an unfair ultimatum, and I hope that this can improve. Senior: Overall, Westminster high school was a fun experience for me! Our athletic programs are very strong, and there is a strong sense of community and school pride. A majority of the falculty is helpful and wants to see students succeed. We are the only school in our county that offers an extensive sign language program which is highly recommended among students. We have a variety of clubs to get involved in all throughout the year, however it would be nice if the administration eliminated the club schedule which allows clubs to only meet once a month, which is not frequent enough.... Junior: South Carroll certainly is not the pinnacle of education by any means. However its a community and a school that I've been fortunate to be a part of for the past 3 years. Sure South Carroll has its flaws, maybe its 58 years old and out of date, but those are the only reasons keeping it from being 5 stars in my eyes. The school offers a variety of classes to suit the interests of students of all sorts preparing them for higher education or the real world ahead. South Carroll also has teachers who do their best to connect with their students and teach them to their own individual needs. Even South Carroll Athletics, specifically our Football and Wrestling programs have done exceptionally well in recent years giving our small rural county a name that gets to be recognized across the state of Maryland. Alum: I attended Carroll Christian Schools from the 8th grade through graduation. In my time there I was able to be part of a tight knit and loving community of people. The education I received was on the same level if not higher than the schools around the area. We were encouraged to use technology to aid us in our studies and projects and we also received Apple iPads as upper class students which was included in the cost of tuition. This school was ultimately the best choice for me, but for others it might not be. Carroll Christian is a private Christian school and and enrolled student will be put into bible classes and will be required to sit through a weekly chapel service. The teachers are caring of the students but will discipline them according to their behavior. Parent: I agree with everything that was posted by other reviewers, but I also see an administrative staff and teachers that are trying. Its my sons first year and yes it has been tough but I have encountered some individuals that have been more patient with my child than I have at times. I keep my son here because I feel like between myself and those staff members that take the time to listen to my son and see through the wall he's built to protect himself. They saw my son wasnt what he presented. He wasnt disruptive he was trying to battle the obstacles presented to him upon being able to finally be set free from home to a new school with all new faces beginning puberty, grieving , failing, seeing racial divide, forced to deal with trying to achieve through all of that.They continued to try and reach my son through tremendous team efforts.
