Each of my children built special relationships with teachers who served as coaches, club leaders, chaperones on school sponsored trips or simply caring mentors. Senior: Coming to Westtown has been one of the greatest decisions I have made to date. Westtown has allowed me to gain experience in leadership, as well as build strong bonds with my peers and faculty. The academics are challenging, but not to the point where it consumes you, and there is plenty of support for students. I've had the wonderful opportunity to try new things and explore, and I learn more about myself every day while there. The fact that it is a Quaker school also adds a unique experience to Westtown. You don't have to be a Quaker to attend, but religious diversity is celebrated at Westtown, as well as learning about other religions. As a Muslim, Westtown has supported me tremendously throughout the month of Ramadan. All in all, a wonderful experience. Parent: Malvern faculty and staff have such a special gift tapping into our son's inner strengths. My son went from parochial to public school before finding his home at Malvern. He was quiet and ok with coming to school, doing his best each day. After a few short weeks his team of teachers have worked with him to place him in challenging classes, encouraging his participation in campus events, and stepping out of his comfort zone to explore a student leadership role. His first year provided so much personal awareness and growth. He began his journey learning who he is and how to build on these strengths, as well as recognize where he needs to be challenged. Something we spent many years partnering with outside counselors and teachers in his previous schools with little success. We knew we were missing something and the Malvern staff have been able to help him so quickly and effectively. Alum: Great Valley was a good experience, overall. It could use some work in terms of diversity, but I was lucky to receive the quality education that it offers. I felt well-prepared moving into collegiate life, and I believe that they gave me adequate resources. The counseling department could also use some work. If you wanted resources to prepare you beyond high school, you really had to take it upon yourself. Something that I wish was talked about more in school is mental health. There was little to no discussion about preparing high schoolers to take on mental health struggles beyond high school in the real world. I think that the school could have benefitted from including more of that. In a competitive and high-performing high school such as Great Valley, mental health is of the utmost importance and should be treated as such. Junior: This school does a great job at accommodating to students and is a great learning atmosphere. When it comes to teachers, Devon Prep is very complicated. I have had the greatest, most proficient teachers ever, but I've also had teachers where I would question the obtention of their degree. Despite these awful teachers, some teachers make the entire school worth it and will change your life. I believe it is a great school and I am happy to go here. Alum: The best thing about Villa is the environment of its classrooms. Villa girls are encouraged to speak their minds and are expected to do so without fear of 'being wrong' or 'sounding stupid.' Villa girls become truly comfortable asking questions, sharing opinions, or even contesting the teacher; nor do they fear judgement from classmates when speaking their minds. Encouraging young women to feel comfortable in a classroom facilitates high performance in college and in the work force. Villa's dedication to encouraging young women to confidently articulate themselves in the classroom sets their graduates up for real success - I am truly grateful for this formative experience. The big drawbacks: some admin. individuals were difficult to deal with and enforced rules to a very intense degree - which fostered a culture more focused on fear of punishment than growth and self-discovery. Parent: The Phelps school was perfect for our son, not only academically, but socially as well. He needed more attention from teachers than he could get at any other school. It was very easy for our son to sit quietly, doing the minimum. But, the terrific teachers at Phelps would nicely encourage his participation. His grades improved. Alum: Kimberton Waldorf School is a school with unique experiences, but it is not without its flaws. Due to it being a small private school, there are smaller classes and closer connections with classmates and teachers. The school has a lot of opportunities to do art and learn about art. For school trips, there are many that take place outdoors with camping. There are a few trips with backpacking, one with canoeing, and another in 12th grade where the students go to Maine to learn about Zoology and have the opportunity to see the life that they are learning about. There are many hands on experiences such as that. Kimberton Waldorf being a small school also comes with its disadvantages. There are fewer clubs and less opportunities for sports. Parent: Our son has truly thrived at VFMA. He is constantly busy and involved with SO many activities. He has been afforded many opportunities at VFMA that he would never have been given at a public school. He has had opportunities to have breakfast with state representatives, attend the Versailles Dinner, meet royalty, and attend a two week STEM camp in six months. The small class sizes and the excellent faculty have made a huge difference in our son's academic outlook. The most impressive part of this school is the leadership opportunities our son has had. Senior: I had been introduced to the classical learning method employed by Regina Luminis at a young age, in 1st - 3rd grade at one of its sister schools, Regina Angelourum in Ardmore, PA. After leaving, I was bounced around various other curriculums, but I was not content. All of my classes seemed static and compartmentalized, and I felt I was actually learning very little. RLA provided this much-needed coherence; I was shown how interwoven and engaging my many subjects were.
