Works Here: Westminster is a wonderful community and school. I had a chance to get to know the school prior to joining the faculty and was struck by how welcoming everyone was and the strong commitment to individualized and holistic education. The school's small size and many offerings allow students to challenge themselves in a supportive environment, pursue their passions, and just as importantly try new things. Being a part of their journeys and seeing them transform into confident, well-rounded, and passionate young adults, who are ready to make their future communities better, is incredibly rewarding. Senior: As a current student, there is no cell service and the wifi is astonishingly bad. The dorms are very small and they will only show you the nice dorm (Brown) when you tour. They also won't mention that we have classes and mandatory programs where attendance is taken most saturdays. They also make it very hard to leave campus and have a life outside of school via the schoolsuite app system they use. Athletics are great and academically it would be very hard to fail a class with all the opportunities you have with the teachers. Attend Avon if you want to eat chicken for every meal as well.... Senior: Senior here, and I loved my experience... mostly! Some teachers are better than others, but the majority of my teachers are intellectually engaging and really care about their students. The student body isn't particularly diverse, but there is an effort being made to mitigate that and to better support out BIPOC students. The best thing about Walker's is unquestionably the way that we've been encouraged to speak our minds and challenge the system. For this empowerment alone I have to recommend the school. Of course, there are downsides, administration can be stuck in its ways, and one often feels powerless to change our school. Sophomore: Northwest Catholic High School has a great community surrounded by different types of people that make you feel accepted. The academics are very competitive. The teachers and the curriculum prepares students for life beyond high school, whether that includes college or a career path. Northwest Catholic has 20+ clubs and activities, so anyone who goes there can find multiple activities that they are interested in. The school also has many sports in competitive conferences, and students, staff and alumni come to a lot of the games to show their support for the teams. As a student here, I have never met anyone who has felt unsafe in the school’s environment. Northwest Catholic High School has a very inclusive environment that has a close community. Many students who went to Northwest school have returned to teach, send their kids, or have come back to stay in touch with their fellow classmates. Senior: The size of Canton high school really offers a personal relationship between students and teachers. I knew everyone in my class fairly well. Most of teachers are really kind and hard working and they want their students to succeed. They are constantly offering opportunities to their students and encouraging them to join the multitude of clubs that exist at this school. Despite the size this school provides a really great education and many extracurricular opportunities. I do wish that the administration took the opinions of the students into a little more account. Parent: This is our first year attending Torrington Christian but have participated in sports & after school clubs in prior years. Both of my children love it (8th and 9th grade). The teachers are attentive to each child and both of them are thriving. They teach them to be responsible for their work/actions and respectful to all. They have both grown academically, biblically and socially. They love their peers and have made wonderful friends. Senior: I was a transfer student coming into Saint Paul my senior year and their community welcomed me with open arms. Ever since I was accepted I've experienced many aspects the school has to offer by playing on the basketball team, watching the award-winning musical theatre program, and meeting many of the wonderful and kind faculty. Even though the commute to school for me is longer than any of my years before, going to Saint Paul is worth the trip. Parent: Our family joined the Renbrook community summer of 2020. Over the last two years we have been impressed by their thoughtful planning to provide the happiest and safest learning environment possible throughout the pandemic. I appreciate how much PE, library, STEAM, foreign language, music, and art are prioritized in the curriculum to round out the academic experience. Students also have the opportunity to participate in sports and a variety of other after school activities for added enrichment. The school is organized and communicative. We receive weekly school and teacher newsletters and we can feel engaged in classroom learning with the Homeroom app. The faculty and staff are devoted to their students' love of learning. For a Pre-K to Grade 8 school, I am amazed by the level of alumni engagement. It is what you would typically see at the high school/college level. Parent: The Montessori School of Greater Hartford is truly a unique learning environment centered on the individual needs of each child. We have three children currently at the school and could not be happier with the attention and encouragement they have received. How do I communicate with them, it was really struggling for me. So I ended up leaving this school and I moved to American School for the Deaf in junior year. Parent: Our son transitioned to STMS from a public elementary school experience, starting there in 6th grade and is currently a rising 8th grader. His transition was seamless socially and academically. This is the best educational decision we have made to prepare him for long-term academic competencies, overall social-emotional well-being, and spiritual grounding. STMS continues to provide academic rigor, mutual respect amongst staff, students, and families. There will always be exceptions, where a staff person or an experience may result in lower than expected outcomes, but it is fair to say that this school and the community of STMS create an environment of belonging in which children thrive. That is the norm we have observed and experienced. Diversity is a work in progress, probably due to cost.
