Freshman: I like the welcoming environment and sense of belonging from going to this school. Loomis’s emphasis on the Best Self and Common Good is present throughout the school‘s culture and social life, and hence the school is very open and accepting. The diversity at the school made me feel welcome and accepted, and Loomis’s programs to raise awareness for groups like the LGBTQ+ community were reaffirming and a nice action for National Coming Out Day. The school’s academic programs are beneficially challenging as well, with flexibility in advancing in courses such that students are able to take sufficiently challenging courses. The music, arts and after school activities all have an abundance of applicable resources. Parent: WOW, is all I can say about HCSS West! As a parent, we all want the best for our children but lets face it, it may not be achieved in a public school setting. For my child, it definitely wasn't and was looking for a new environment where he wasn't labeled any more. I did my research which showed both good & bad reviews. We went for a tour and talked to people. Since he was almost failing his core classes, he was miserable, and he fought every time he had to get ready for school, I figured what was the worst thing that could happen with the change? I just knew it was stressful and a miserable way to start every day. Day one, he came home and said he loved it which brought tears to my eyes. Never had we heard anything like that from his mouth! Never had we seen excitement to go to school! Never had we seen him make honor roll! Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this to happen but I am so happy it did. Junior: Junior at East Catholic. Had a lot of issues with the school involving the administration, but President Sean Brennan has done an amazing job fixing the place up! He’s created a much more comfortable environment for students of color, and put in a clear effort to fix the major flaws of the school. Many of the issues present in my freshman year are gone now. Senior: Academic culture within the Metropolitan Learning Center is quite strong. It is recognizable that the school prides itself on offering its students with challenging yet rewarding education that forces us to push our minds to think beyond its believed capacity. MLC is an International Baccalaureate school, and is the only public school in Connecticut to host both the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. Senior: Over my four year experience at Cheney Tech, I believe that I have grown exponentially. Not only have I become a better learner at Cheney but the school has taught me a lot of value and had a lot to offer for my career choice. Advice for the incoming freshman would be to pick a trade that you can see yourself making a career out of it. While at Cheney, many people were unhappy with their selection of trade because they either lose interest or they have a change of heart in what they would like to do. This can cause a student to lose focus and slowly fall into a hole they now have to fight their way out of. One other advice I would have for incoming freshmen is to GET WBL. WBL is under appreciated and is an awesome opportunity to get a head start on your career and get on the job experience. This opportunity also is great because instead of going to your trade; if your shop instructor allows it, you can go to work instead of school and get paid which is a big plus!... Read 82 reviews
