Alum: State College Area High School is an incredible public school with very expansive opportunities one may find in a University, just offered for high school students (AP, IB, Honors, College Prep, Regular, etc levels you pick yourself). There are 6 languages other than English you can gain credit in, many music and athletic related activities, computer science programming, agriculture, specified science electives that count for credit, Penn State Commute program to take in-person college classes/research opportunities, etc.
The school is very large, with average graduating classes of about 700 students, and while there are many hard working and gifted staff members, mental health awareness and psychological help are very lacking. As a student, if you have an mental health issue, you either solve it yourself, proactively tell the counselors/staff what you need, or ask for help with the risk of counselors diagnosing you in a less than 12 minute convo, leading to improper support.

Junior: As someone who has gone to this school and has experienced change, this school has been able to exceed greatly in my academics and help me grow in my faith. People mention the teachers being a problem and at times, I can see it, but I must say that it is not fully true. With some minor incidents here and there, I have learned fine and achieved high marks over the course of my stay. Another thing that I want to mention is the great teams SJCA has to offer. With it being a small school, it gives people a chance to try sports and develop skills needed for being a leader. With teams such as the XC team winning states countless times, this shows the constant effort put into these teams to see success. High school is what you make it and I must say that goes with the school itself. If you go in with a bad attitude, it won't go well but if you go in with a positive attitude, high school will be more enjoyable and something you will remember. As a junior, I can't wait for senior year!
