Alum: I began attending Hackley in the sixth grade and remained there through the end of my high school career. With such great academic resources at your disposal, it's hard to not garner great college readiness. That being said, near-college level stress on children definitely creates a stress-inducing atmosphere. While this may be perceived as preparing kids for the real world, providing few mental health resources and being in the predominantly white, affluent bubble of Hackley does anything but that. Very grateful for the great opportunities the school afforded me both in and out of the classroom, particularly through travel, which was covered by my hefty financial aid. Parent: My son graduated from BC in 2022, and he had a wonderful experience. The teachers and administration were professional and engaging. They really want the boys to succeed, and they give them opportunities to try new things and assume leadership positions. They help the boys become responsible young men. The diverse students support each other in many ways on the field, in the classroom and in the community. It is a true brotherhood. Junior: I love the inclusivity and how open everyone is. Anyone could feel at home here with all the commodities and an interesting student body. As an Asian American, there is a lot of representation within the school and I feel very well-connected and safe. The education aspect is also very diverse and more teachers are always welcome to help students when asked. The student-to-teacher ratio is very small which is good because it makes it easy to get your questions answered and your voice heard. Something I would change would be the food system that we have. I feel that we need better and healthier options that are more enjoyable for the students. Most people end up eating unhealthy foods because the healthy options are not as well thought out and put together. Parent: Having had two students attend high school at Leffell, I can honestly say it is a very special place with Jewish values at the core of the school experience. No school is perfect, but most of the teachers care deeply about the individual students and their learning, and the administration is generally accessible and open to feedback. Student life is robust for a school of this size with many sports, clubs, activities, and community service opportunities. The arts could be stronger, but these programs seem to be growing over time. STEM is a big focus with most students opting in to the 4 year Engineering & Entrepreneurship program. The school has a very strong sense of community among students and families. The spring of senior year is a highlight with 2 months spent in Israel and Poland followed by internships or independent projects until graduation. Senior: My experience at Clarkstown south may have been limited, yet I can confidently say it was a good one. At South, inclusion and respect was preached on a daily basis. The wonderful staff kept close eyes out for negativity, and were quick to act out when spotted. Nothing is perfect in life as there are some poor aspects of this school. The implication of certain rules frequently rubbed me the wrong way. A dress code was introduced that blatantly targeted the female student body, cutting what they were allowed to wear on school property in half. Parent: I am a high achieving type A mom. When my child was diagnosed with a profound speech delay at age 3 I honestly feared for his future. Our middle school recommended that we "shop around" for the right high school for our child. We chose this school for our son because he's a talented artist who's book smart but painfully shy. We feared that he'd get lost in the crowd and not learn much at our district school. The attention to my child's educational and emotional needs at this school has been truly stellar. He's going off to a very good college next year and we could not be prouder. He had really blossomed at Bergen Tech and we could not be more thrilled. The staff, the teaching philosophy, the way this community cares for its own is second to none. My child has received a private school education in this wonderful public school.
