Senior: Don’t let the four stars dissuade you from applying or attending! Jesuit High School’s motto is “Men and Women for Others;” in other words, community comes first. After four years, I’m not sure I could’ve have picked a better high school to go to; you will meet people who are passionate, driven, and caring. Though competitive and rigorous, Jesuit offers learning opportunities every minute you are there. Their response to the coronavirus pandemic has been quick and professional, and the teachers, which are one of the highlights of the school have been flexible and positive. A mostly traditional school, Jesuit does not offer many opportunities for hands-on learning, with the exception of a few classes including visual arts, journalism, and environmental science, to name a few. Senior: Valor Christian School International is second to none! The fact that our tuition not only pays for my outstanding education, but it also goes to support a child in a developing nation get a free education, clothes, and food makes me realized how one person can truly make a difference. Once I got into High School, I had the amazing opportunity to go and visit these kids in their country during our missions week. I got to see first hand how my family and I are helping spread hope to others. Valor's teachers and staff are always so uplifting and eager to help. They make each and every student feel valued and heard. Having come from public school, I was not anticipating the small class sizes or the one-on-one time each teachers is willing and ready to spend with me. If you don't understand, just ask, they'll help! Alum: Very diverse school with generally great academic opportunities and enthusiastic teachers that work very hard to give students a good experience. Lots of AP courses are offered, but it's unfortunately pretty lacking in regard to Computer Science education, at least when I graduated in 2020. As a current Software Engineering/ CS major, I would have definitely liked to have more applicable experience than outdated HTML web design. Some teachers are absolute gems and do a great job of keeping you engaged or otherwise leave a memorable impression, but like all schools experiences can vary between teachers. Senior: I first started at Valley Catholic as a freshman and overall, I think that it is a great school. Because it is a college prep school, the education is outstanding and has really prepared me for college next year. The class sizes are fairly small, so that means that there is a lot more opportunities for one-on-one interactions with the teachers if you have any questions or concerns. The community is what really makes Valley Catholic special, however. As well as a high school, Valley Catholic also has a middle school, elementary school, and an early learning school, so a lot of the kids who grew up going to Valley Catholic also graduate from high school here. This gives older students opportunitues to help the younger students if they need it because we are all on the same campus. Because we are a Catholic school, the nuns come over from the church fairly often to help us not only grow intellectually, but spiritually as well. Alum: The International School of Beaverton offers students a well-rounded education that promotes critical thinking skills that can be applied to other aspects of the student's life. In addition to this, students are welcomed into an environment that encourages their students to showcase their own cultures and identities while also promoting understanding between cultures. This is done with a lens of compassion and understanding. This is a great school for those students looking to find an environment of academic rigor, however, a downside to this is that most to all subjects are taught at a very fast rate, accompanied by a heavy workload which makes students feel overwhelmed. This results in many students leaving the school for another. Parent: The education we wish we had received! We just completed our first year at St Stephens with three of our kids and we were blown away. Everything from the exhaustive approach to English grammar/writing/phonetic learning, to the emphasis on character, to the Latin that begins in 4th, to the teachers who are loved and respected…all of it was beyond. Our children memorized more in one year than most do in their entire lives. They started debate in 4th grade that just blew me away with their super early ability to use rhetoric. The music and art programs are off the charts. I just think of the word “abundance” when I think of our school. We feel the foundation this school gives (classical education is something I only learned of through attempting to homeschool for a year and fell in love with it) is necessary and beautiful. Senior: This is my fourth year at Mountainside High School and I have loved every school year at this school. Every single student has amazing teachers that actually teach you subjects that they are interested in. I would say that the school is pretty diverse, everyone including the students do a good job of making sure that everyone is included in school activities and school learning. Although it is a new built school, I don't feel that there are any health concerns that would come to the students and any staff member. Regarding the curriculum, there are a variety of easy to hard to rigorous classes students could take depending on their level of academics. Mountainside high school is a very spirited school especially with the incoming frosh coming into the school year. Football games are a blast to be at and cheer on the for the Mavericks!... Parent: After an extensive high school search, Westside Christian was a clear choice. This school has been a profound blessing to our family! Our daughter is a Westside graduate and our son is currently a junior there. We have watched both our children thrive in this loving environment filled with gifted teachers and administrators who have found their calling. Westside is certainly strong academically and our daughter found herself extremely well-prepared for college, having taken advantage of Westside’s numerous concurrent credit classes. Yet, Westside offers so much more. The student body is kind, the art and music programs are strong and the athletic program is filled with opportunities. But perhaps our favorite thing about Westside is their commitment to putting their mission statement into action. Parent: Both my children go to Arco Iris School and we love it here! I can’t say enough good things about how amazing the teachers are and how much they care for each and every student. The teachers and staff are not only fantastic, but they create a wonderful learning environment, and strive to get to know each and every child. The Arco family - teachers, admin, students, and families - is one of a kind! There is a true sense of community and support. Every school has its share of issues and problems, but the admin, staff, board, families, and PTO are constantly working to improve and make this school the best it can be! My kids are excited to go to school each day. It is fantastic watching my children grow and thrive and become more fluent everyday as they learn to speak the language. Alum: My high school experience was unforgettable! Everyone, students and teachers, were all really accepting and kind. There were many different cliques but everyone had a friend from each group. Middle School Student: My experience at MPMS was very good. The teachers were great, and humanities was especially fun. The math was hard the first year because it was hard to catch up with the other students, but the remote learning helped me get back on track on that subject. However, this was only because I was in the SUMA program. The non-SUMA people had different experiences. Because the other classes were less tightly knit, you could be easily excluded. I also didn't feel safe in the hallways due to the other students in school and the lack of care from the staff. The education is significantly lower than the SUMA students as well. So basically, if you aren't in SUMA, attending MPMS will probably be kind of... a bad experience for you. The band program is amazing though. NOTE: The school is falling apart in a way since some teachers (including the SUMA teachers) are transferring to Tumwater instead, so this year will most likely be very different from the last because of that. Senior: Speaking from a student's perspective Faith Bible has given me so many opportunities and the chance to build my character and my faith. The academics truly help you push yourself to learn more and the teachers care that you understand the subject and what is being taught. The school does have a variety of sports that are growing every year and the school is currently 2A. The coaches all care about our health as athletes and want to see us succeed and enjoy the sport. There is also an early college program they started in 2022 for Juniors and Seniors that gives them the chance to take actual college classes online for college credits, involved in this is dual enrollment classes that are taught by high school teachers for college credit. Alum: I am a recent graduate, and I think Arts and Communication Magnet Academy has fallen short on several occasions. Select teachers and directors are frankly not very good at teaching, the school offers few advanced placement classes, some arts programs revived uneven amounts of funding, the administrative and office workers are frequently rude, and I'd say the school is not very good at preparing students for college.
