Parent: Our experience at Shady Side Academy has been outstanding. Our daughter came to the school as a Sophomore after our family moved to Pittsburgh, and her transition was seamless. The students, faculty and administration made her feel a part of the Shady Side community from our first visit. The culture at SSA is extremely welcoming and inclusive for both the student and their family—it’s truly a partnership. Academics at Shady Side are rigorous, but the support from teachers is unmatched. We feel confident that our daughter will be successful not only in college, but beyond, due in large part to her time at Shady Side Academy. Senior: I had a great experience at Winchester Thurston. Everyone—the faculty, the students, the administrators, the custodial and kitchen staff—wanted the best for each and every one of us. It's a place that nurtures students and encourages them to pursue their passions. It's a collaborative environment where students are rarely in conflict with each other. Senior: North Allegheny High School was a very conflicted experience. Your experience depends entirely on what classes and teachers you have along with what extra-curriculars you do. I would recommend taking as many advanced classes as possible, because then you will get good teachers. NASH administration is alright overall, but very skewed towards certain extra-curriculars over others. For example, the speech and debate team, despite being nationally ranked, has received little to no support from administration, while other activities receive much more support. Niche User: We moved in 2014, specifically to Hampton, to make sure our children would have the opportunity to attend HTSD. Poff Elementary has been an amazing experience for our son with a perfectly balanced environment of progressive, research-based, data-driven instruction/curriculum, coupled with a warm, family focused, small community school feel. Middle School Student: I am currently in 7th grade at this school, and I love it. The majority teachers are very kind to their students, and clubs and activities are graciously available. I don’t take many sports, but I know that football is taught in Physical Education, and there are clubs for cross county, field hockey, fencing, basketball, football, ice hockey, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, golfing, mountain biking, and walking. There are three different menus for food, and about 1/3 of them are vegetarian. There are four different music options to take: chorus, band, orchestra, and general music. I am currently in my fifth year of orchestra. Four world languages are offered: Latin, Spanish, French, and German. Seventh graders take two languages and eighth graders take one. Senior: It was overall a good experience. I received good education, and many people I met were very friendly. There are some downsides though. It may sound silly, but Hampton is very bad at regulating temperature in their schools. It will be 10 degrees outside, and it will feel like 50 inside. I am not alone on this, everyone else is shivering around me as well. I have Raynaud's, meaning my fingers and toes go numb easily in cold. My fingers often turn white in school. Unless it is 70 or above outside, it is unbearably cold inside the building. It makes it impossible to concentrate on class since my body naturally prioritizes my health. Alum: Aquinas Academy helped me to flourish to become the person I am today. I know that by attending Aquinas for 13 years, I am confident that I have the skills for university and later life. Most teachers are brilliant individuals who know their subject matter very well, always willing to stay after or come before school to help me out with any specific questions I had. The school is rapidly growing, and it is evident that Aquinas' successes are growing as well. It might seem that Aquinas doesn't have as many opportunities in niche areas that future students are passionate about, as compared to other schools. From my own experience, students actually are better prepared to lead because they are so strongly encouraged and guided by the administration to start and intentionally lead meaningful clubs, extracurricular activities, or sports that they are interested in. Junior: I moved to Oakland Catholic sophomore year. I went to a school before that really did not match my needs. I knew someone from middle school that transferred here for high school. I always knew about the school, but never imagined myself there. I brought up the idea to my parents and they were hesitant. After months and months of conversation regarding the subject, they agreed to let me tour it. I still remember the day I toured, I was so nervous but pleasantly surprised by this environment. After the tour, I begged my parents even more to let me go. And my last day of freshman year my parents told me that I could go if I followed a list of rules they had for me. I've been here ever since and it has been an amazing journey. I've made friends I know I will have for life and amazing experiences and opportunities that not all girls are lucky enough to have. Senior: Eden Christian Academy is located in Pittsburgh, PA. In terms of academics, it can be challenging, but it prepares you for what is demanded from college students. It is clear that all of the teachers truly care and invest themselves into every student. Going beyond Edens academics, the sports programs are growing each year! Many of our sports have made it to WPIAL individuals, team WPIALS and even States. As a senior, students are given the opportunity to take charge by creating a vision for the school to embrace for the year by putting on events, creating service opportunities, and helping other grow in their faith. Eden also offers opportunities to serve our community through different clothing or food drives, donations, trips to local business that need people to do basic tasks they don't have time to do, and more! Middle School Student: I have been a student at ECS from K-8. I cannot stress enough the how amazing and beneficial the staff have been. Every. Single. Teacher. I’ve had has been radically committed to the mission of this school (except one but dont worry). Daily I see teachers speaking on the same level as students and genuinely listening to their needs. The motto “we grow citizens” is exactly what is happening in this environment. Not only is the school devoted to cultivating learning that is beneficial for the future for students, teaching empathy and compassion, they also have lots of cool plants around each campus :). One of my most recent math teachers was one of the most influential people I have encountered in my 14 year life. He taught me so much about how to be compassionate, devoted, and vulnerable. Not only that, he taught about the deepest workings of math and encouraged students to ask questions and explore. ECS is filled with incredible teachers like this.
