Parent: So far, so good. Son chose this school over other top schools because he liked the community there. Happy to report that he is loving school and the food and getting acclimated very well. The HS academics are challenging which is a plus but I never got the sense that he is stressed out. It is a healthy and manageable level for him but could be difficult if student is not used to the rigor. The teachers and admins are very supportive and available and most of the students are friendly, nice, and well rounded. Alum: Southwestern Academy is a peculiar place to have attended and graduated from when I was a student. It is a great small private school that offers a safe learning environment and pushed students to reach a better potential. I learned how to write and found a new love for literature that I had not had before. Furthermore, the teachers had the capacity and time to have one-on-one time with students, which was great for me because I am terrible at math. The small school size allowed me to be able to participate in sports, such as volleyball and basketball as well as the high school drama productions. Lastly, it was easy to make connections with other students because it was a tight community. There were friends that I had made throughout the years that are from across the world and friends that I made that are close by in the same city. Middle School Student: I attended Pilgrim School from 7-8th grade. I overall loved the experience the school provided for me. The faculty and administration were so helpful to me as a new student. By my first week at the school they all knew me which I didn’t have at any of the other schools I attended. I would definitely recommend this school for elementary and junior- high school. If you are looking for a school with a very welcoming community for your children, I would definitely recommend this one. Pilgrim School definitely was a great introduction to Los Angeles County, and Southern California for me coming from the East Coast. As a student with learning disabilities, the school did a great job helping me stay on track, and working with my schedule. I have many friends who enjoy/enjoyed their high school experience here, I personally needed to be with more kids. Alum: I really enjoyed La Salle's wide breadth of activities, especially their clubs, and felt like there was always a place for someone to find their niche. The teachers can be hit or miss sometimes and can really make or break a class, especially at the AP level. Junior: My experience at Downtown Business Magnet High School has been very transformative. I learned a lot about myself and accomplished things I thought I never would have. There were many times where I was bewildered in my classes but my teachers would always find ways to help me understand the work better. The school is remarkable in every way, but there are some things I would change about it. I think I can speak for everyone when I say they would be happier to be in a much bigger campus/building. More windows, less clutter in hallways, more tables and places to eat outside, a field for sports, and just overall vitamin D from natural sunlight! We are now starting to go back to school in a few weeks but there's still a virus going around in the world. The fact that there are no windows in the building is a high risk to students because there is no ventilation circling around so the germs are all contained in the small building. He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Senior: From my point of view, Keppel is a great place to be academically, but it is also a great place for the performing arts! I have personally been in the Aztec Band, our orchestra, and even part of the production for our spring musical! These teachers are wonderful because they really care about us and we create this familial bond with them! It's great to see these wonderful communities at school. I wish all the staff at Mark Keppel High School were like this. I know some staff that should get better at trying to understand students and say things in a much nicer tone. Freshman: The experience at my high school is so far very enjoyable. It's beyond anything that my middle school self could have imagined. The community is kind and welcoming as well as diverse. Upperclassmen are a great help at making new freshmen feel welcomed. They also help new students adjust to the school quickly. The teachers are so considerate with helping students with any troubles that they could have.
