Other: My experience has been phenomenal, especially with the fun but rigorous IB curriculum. Despite the challenges of IB, I can see that a huge support system exists and always is here to help me out with anything. This support system mainly consists of students and teachers. The teachers are also professional and they have helped me understand my subject choices at a deeper level. The food and safety of the campus is also relatively good, compared to the other schools I have learned at. I feel like UWC in general give students the opportunity to get closer to their dream jobs while allowing them to explore many extracurricular activities and engage in fun outdoor activities. Being in a boarding school, I have learned to be more independent and would say that I am ready for a college life. Senior: I have gone to Albuquerque Academy since 6th grade. It is definitely a college prepatory school! Every year, the coursework becomes more difficult, but you are also able to choose more personalized classes. The community here is very diverse, and by the end of the school year you are garunteed to know all of your classmates. Because of these small class sizes, it is also nice because you can get much more one on one time with teachers that want you to succeed. I love how easy it is to find your community here. Sometimes, it is stressful because of the high stress levels of trying to be the best academically. Parent: Bosque School was the perfect place for my son who graduated a couple of years ago. His teachers were experienced, inspiring, and loved their students. The location is gorgeous -- in the bosque around the Rio Grande -- and the school gets students out in the woods doing science experiments, observing plants and animals, and appreciating their wild surroundings. My son was extremely well-prepared for college after graduating from Bosque School. In addition to his academic preparation and his athletic achievements, his experience at Bosque contributed to his social and emotional development so that he was well-equipped to be successful and independent at a major university. Parent: I am a parent of two students (upper and middle), and following the recent fall Open House, I wanted to share my experience at Prep and my thanks to the school for providing such an outstanding environment for our kids. What stood out to me first and foremost were the teachers - every single one impressed me tremendously with their enthusiasm, their attention to the details, and most importantly how well they knew each student and how hard they work to make sure each student is progressing . We have experience with both public and private schools elsewhere, and the quality of the teaching at Prep really has no equal anywhere. Senior: East Mountain High School is a preparatory school that intends to get its students ready for college classes. I love how small my school is and the teacher-to-student ratio. This has helped me get the extra tutoring and grow strong relationships with teachers. Since my school is located in the Sandia Mountains, I feel very safe and happy to be out in nature. I do wish that our school did have a cafeteria, which would increase social interactions and keep from us sitting on the ground. I also wish that we had more diversity in our student ethnicity. Most of our school is White. I also feel like our campus could use a little renovation since we are in big trailers for school. Senior: I loved my four years at La Cueva because the school spirit and community was amazing. They take a lot of pride in their academic and athletic accomplishments. They have great dances, pep rally's, band performances, clubs, teachers, and students. The security guards are super sweet and always make sure students are having a great day.La Cueva also has a great tutoring program for students that need help with subjects they are struggling with.The janitors do a terrific job keeping our school clean and beautiful. Senior: I have had a great overall experience at Saint Michael's High School. The preparation I have received towards college has been more than sufficient, and has allowed me to pursue goals I never thought I would have. Although there may be occasions in which I find specific teachers giving arguably useless assignments, the overall care towards helping children truly understand the topics being taught is greatly received. Saint Michael's does not encourage students to memorize material, rather it cares that students learn the subject, to be used in their adult lives. I would like to see some of the manners of teaching change. I find that in some cases, assignments may be given as "busy work". Alum: St. Pius X prepared me well, not only for a Ivy League degree, but for life. On top of the academic preparation, a wide breadth of cocurricular classes allowed for exploration into different passions- some of which I still hold, such as film photography and weight lifting. Athletically, the coaches and teammates I was blessed to compete with all touched my heart, many of whom I still keep in touch with. Aside from the great teachers, courses offered, and stellar athletic teams, the diversity of the students and emphasis on living out the Catholic faith taught me to always love your neighbor. I would argue that this aspect is what makes St. Pius X so special. I would always recommend St. Pius for students and parents looking to have a well rounded, wholistic high school experience. Junior: AIMS is an interesting school is the easiest way to put it. The school itself is middle school and high school, yet holds about 600-800ish students. The faculty are close-knit, since it is so tiny, and the students practically stick with the same classmates they met in 6th grade. The academic course is excellent for those who wish to attend UNM afterward since the school is chartered by UNM, as you are required to take 30 college credit hours on top of your high school learning. The course load is best put manageable and is best for those who hold their academics higher than their extra-curricular activities. As it is free and requires you to help out with community service per semester, rigorous science fair and Rube Goldberg competitions, and college classes during high school, it is a niche for students who are willing to go through it, and also comply with dress code.... Middle School Student: Good enough. The teachers are great and most of the material is taught well. The way they organize the students is good and creative. I wish some of the teachers were a bit more flexible in how they get the information across, and there were a larger amount of different core classes you could take. It prepares its students well for High School though but isn't the most efficient in keeping the students kind and motivated. The school spirit is okay, but it is a bit overboard in trying to keep the students in check, which gets them a bit more out of line. It offers great computers and other supplies to the students, allowing them to expand their learning capabilities, and still keeps a good balance between work done online vs. on paper. It doesn't assign an overwhelming amount of homework, but there is quite a bit, so I would consider that before sending your child here.
