Senior: Newman is a small private school with a high tuition cost, and because of that, diversity is lacking. But that comes with the territory, and you would face this issue at any private school in Nola. That being said, as a woman of color, I have always felt safe and cared for here, as they does their best to encourage diversity and inclusion. (let it be known that POC students at Newman have very different experiences and the same can't be said for everyone) On the other hand, the school offers amazing opportunities and great academics for students. It's a community in every sense of the word, helping students build relationships and achieve academic excellence with the guidance of their teachers. Each student can feel individually supported and inspired to do their best, and even though Newman isn't perfect, the positives out weigh the negatives by a lot, and compared to other schools in New Orleans, I'm confident in saying that this is the best. Parent: Baton Rouge High has been the soil where we planted our children and have watched them grow! We’ve watched them grow into the most amazing young people and we are so grateful for this school. It has allowed them to become the best versions of themselves! It has given them the tools to develop lifelong friendships, problem solve, develop confidence both while dealing with peers and teachers, etc. We have been so impressed with the AP program as well. These teachers have prepared our son for college, and they always go above and beyond. The choir program has been a amazing place, “home”, for both of our children. Their teacher has developed such a safe place / sense of community there for her students, and I am forever thankful for her. It’s hard to believe that our time at Baton Rouge Magnet High School is almost at an end, but I will be forever thankful for the opportunities that it has provided both of my children.... Alum: I am an alum of the class of 2021. I attended Episcopal for 7 years. I switched from Episcopal from a highly rated public school. The facilities at Episcopal are unmatched by other high schools both academic and athletic. While the facilities are unbelievable, Episcopal is made special by the of the staff of the students. Everything I experienced at Episcopal was amazing with the exception of the administration. The administration does not think through a lot of decisions and is not respected by the students and a lot of parents because of the incompetence. Other than the current administration tearing down what previous administrations have built alongside a great community of students and alumni, the school is unmatched by any high school in the area and a lot of universities.... Senior: Haynes has been such an awesome experience for me. I didn’t receive a seat until my Junior year, but once a seat finally opened up and I was able to enroll I was able to make friends quickly. The students, teachers and staff were very welcoming and made me feel like I belonged right away. I was able to jump right into talented music and art as well as take part in the productions with theatre. I am so thankful for a public school that has all of these accommodations available to us. The teachers strive hard to prepare us for college and there are many opportunities at Haynes to get a step ahead in planning for our journeys into college after graduation. At the end of my junior year Haynes took us on a trip called junior journey. We were able to travel by bus and tour several college campuses along the way from Louisiana to Tennessee. Junior: As a student that attends Patrick F. Taylor Science and Technology academy, I believe that this school and its staff put education at the forefront of everything they do. Since it is a science and technology school, there are ample resources that can propel its students to excellence when it comes to science and technology matters. When it comes to extracurricular activities, PFTSTA funds the clubs by having different fundraisers specifically made for certain clubs. Sports is definitely not a priority, although they just built a new gym for basketball games and volleyball games. Alum: My overall experience at Caddo Parish Magnet High School was amazing. As an incoming freshman, I was placed into classes tailored to my academic level, and had the opportunity to improve throughout all four years. All of the teachers had their own unique way of teaching, and all were very focused on preparing the students for college and for life after high school. My favorite thing about the school was the environment. Everyone is welcomed, and you can be who you want to be without fear of being judged. When you come to Magnet High, you feel at home. The worst thing I could say about the school is the amount of homework I was given, and nobody likes homework to begin with! Also, I realize now it was to prepare us for what was to come in college (especially with time management and preventing procrastination), so I am thankful for it. Alum: I really liked going here! I attended this school from second grade until I graduated high school, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I love the friends I made, and the school spirit. The only issues I would say are: the deans and administration are not on your side and want to punish people. Detentions are handed out left and right, dress code is beyond strict, and seniors do not get any privileges. Despite all of this, finding a good of people at this school will get you through the day, and you will love Willow. Senior: I have attended Berchmans Academy for 4 years, and I love it. The student enrollment is very small, and to most that may seem like a terrible thing, but actually it is the exact opposite. The low enrollment number allows for the students to have very close friendships with each other. With Berchmans being a low enrolled K-12 school, upperclassman know the lowerclassman and even the young kids on a first-name personal basis. Due to the low enrollment numbers, the students are given more one on one time with teachers. The teachers and all of the other staff are all awesome. The teachers are passionate about what they teach, which makes a huge difference in the learning environment. There are always new advancements coming into the school, whether it is a new lunch service or as simple as a new club. One major takeaway when I look back at my time at Berchmans, was that I was always respected by everyone, whether that be faculty to students. This school will always stay with me in life.... Senior: Mount Carmel is such a wonderful school, and I am so very blessed to be able to be there. One of the best parts about Mount Carmel is all of the opportunities. I have been able to meet many new people and try new things, but my favorite part is being able to dive deeper into my faith. My faith is so important to me, and Mount Carmel has so many opportunities to help girls get closer to God, such as religious clubs, retreats, religion classes, etc. The hardest part of my Mount Carmel experience was the heavy course load in my Junior year. I absolutely loved the social aspects of Junior year, but the academic work was very challenging. Mount Carmel has already made many great changes, but one change I would like to see is having the school host more events with other high schools. Mount Carmel has various sports events where people from different schools can intermingle, but one change that could happen is a game night hosted where students from other high schools can come to have fun.... Freshman: I've been going to this school for 12/13 years now, and I'm in the 9th grade. This school has been an amazing experience! I have had fun making friends with the girls in my grade. The best part is the traditions, such as conge (faire), may crowning, and cache cache (hide and seek), that come with being a Sacred Heart student. If you plan on attending this school, it would be an amazing choice. The teachers are amazing! Senior: St.Martin's was a great school but every school has some difficulties. The school went through many teachers in my time there, and different people in the head leading positions at the school which was hard to adjust to. But the major problem I had was the school this year my senior year taking away my accommodations I have had my whole life. It made it very difficult for me and it was not even a real reason they did so but after months of fighting and my mother and doctors backing me I got what I needed to succeed no thanks to the new head of upper school this year.... Parent: After a difficult time in a charter high school during the pandemic, my daughter transferred to De La Salle half way through her sophomore year. We have been amazed at the care and encouragement by teachers, and administrators and students alike. It has changed her as a person for the better. They truly individualize courses for each student. My daughter is fantastic in English and social sciences, and struggles in Math. They let her combine AP classes with regular math, and have offered helps along the way. She also attends NOCCA for creative writing, and they accommodate her. I find the students at DLS are happier than the average high school students. They find their people. It is less cliquey than many private schools. Upperclassmen are helpful to younger students. There is a positive atmosphere. No PDA, no fighting, and the administration works with parents of teens discovered using drugs before they kick them out. This provides an atmosphere where kids can learn and flourish.... Senior: New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) is a wonderful place for students from all over the New Orleans area to come and express themselves via their prefered art form. I chose Theatre Design, and I truly believe and can say with 100% certainty that I would not have gotten the training I did if I would have gone to any other school in my area. I am dedicated to this school because I live over an hour away and I still choose every morning to get up at 5:30 to come to school, knowing I could easily just go to a different school. NOCCA has given all students a place to feel safe and challenge themselves in not only their arts, but as people in general.
