I have been attending country day since I was five, and so I have grown very close with a lot of my peers who have been there for the same amount as time as me. People have come and gone but the environment has stayed the same. Parent: Having been at the school since its inception and assisting in many ways from start-up fundraising, marketing, assisting in the classroom and coaching, I can tell you that the Scholars’ Academy is a gifted school like no other. With my three children attending (one having had AWEFUL experiences in public school before being identified as twice gifted), they were able to freely explore their intellectual abilities and create solid lifelong friendships. All organizations have growing pains and our school may not be perfect for your student… that is an opportunity for the parent to find the right place where their student flourishes! Middle School Student: Hi! My name is Jia and I’m an 8th grader at Pleasant Knoll Middle School. I think my school is wonderful for the most part. We have a really great staff as well as facilities such as the computer lab and the library! However, I wish there was more diversity. As you can probably imagine, there also is very little culture and I can’t really express mine. As a South Asian, I think diversity is really important and should be valued. Additionally, our school puts most of its emphasis on sports. The academic as well as the theater, music and art programs don’t get as much funding or materials. I feel as though athletics, academics, and the arts are all equally important and should be treated that way! I do believe Pleasant Knoll Middle is an engaging environment and I am truly lucky to have an opportunity to go to a great school, but there are certainly just a few things I would change.... Parent: We transferred to CCS from another school 3 years ago. Everyone was so welcoming to us as parents and to our students. The culture is nurturing, but the academics are still challenging. The differentiated instruction in the classroom has been impressive. They meet each child where they are, and propel them to the next level. We have been impressed with the afterschool activities, sports and clubs that are offered to lower school students. The administration and teaching staff is top notch and truly cares for your family. Parent: As a parent of two Socrates Academy elementary school scholars I am thoroughly impressed at how much my children have learned and how happy they are with their teachers and classmates. Their teachers are always available to answer any questions I have about my children’s progress, while addressing my concerns with empathy and support. It is so inspiring to see such and active parent faculty involvement group that energizes school spirit while successfully fundraising for the school. Finally, the school is expanding into a state of the art high school which for me illustrates how much the School Board is investing into the development and growth of its students. I would love to see some improvement on the school lunch options and the older school building can use some improvements. However, all in all Socrates Academy is a beautiful diverse school and community. Sophomore: Carmel Christian School plays a very positive role in the life of the students who attend there. As a student, I see how teachers represent the love of Christ and model Christ in an educational environment. This is very inspiring as someone who was still growing in their faith. Teachers and admin care very much about the personal growth of each person who attends. The educational teaching is very strong and vigourous. The community is a beautifully unfified body of believers for the majoirty of the student body. I enjoy the many clubs and activities that Carmel offers even as a private Christian school. Carmel Christian school is a wonderful safe experience including a chapel once a week on Thurdays. Christian morals and values are really a top priority for Carmel. Works Here: My experience at UPA has been nothing but positive. All of the admin staff is very supportive and will help you with anything that you need. They work hard to make UPA the best they can. They give teachers feedback on their instruction, give resources for rigor, followed safety protocols during covid, and will communicate to parents and staff. The teachers here strive for growth for their students and communicate weekly with families, giving updates on their child's progress and are super friendly. Senior: Some of my best experiences at St. Anne have been the times I have spent with friends throughout high school through our school. Through being on sport teams to consulting on homework, the "St. Anne people" have made my high school experience a memorable one. While I have had many wonderful encounters through this school, one thing I would like to see changed is the athletics program, being that I have a passion for athletics, and college preparation. I wish the athletics department could have grown and become stronger during the time I have attended St. Anne, but my hope is that it will only get better from here. Additionally, I would suggest starting to work with students about college early on, such as beginning of junior year, getting them prepared and set before the hectic feelings being a senior can bring about.... The executive director is passionate about the mission and vision of Union Day School. The focus is on academics but also on the whole child. The staff seem very well supported by administration. The fact that my children can stay at one school from K-12, even if we move within the area is such a great feeling. As parents, we get to decide where our children go to school, and Union Day has the balance we are looking for. We left our zoned school because of the middle and high school behaviors our children were consistently being exposed to. Alum: I attended Highland MIll Montessori from 2006-12. I really enjoyed my time there. Everybody was cool and knew each other well and I got a lot of one on one time with my teachers. Of course being in elementary school your going to run across other students who you don't really get along with, but other than that everything was fine. Now, everyone has a different experience and from what I have heard the school has changed drastically. Don't base your decision off of my words though because, like I said, things have changed. They got a new principle, a lot of new teachers, it may not be the same experience for you (or your child) as it was for me. Senior: South Mecklenburg highschool is refered to south Meck by the students and everyone else. The classes from my experience are great. The teachers are the reason for this consequence, they make sure to check on each student and offer diverse methods to teach than what the district give them. Most of my AP classes slightly deviate from what college board requires and I have been interested in every lesson as well as paying attention. Parent: I've had three kids attend Irwin. We love this school. There are great opportunities for the children and the classrooms are amazing. Even though it is an older building, there are many upgrades including a renovated (in the 90's - but the building itself is much, much older) interior and filtered water bottle filling stations. We've had much success with the teachers and admin at this school. I can't imagine sending my kids elsewhere. Middle school student: Randolph is a very diverse school that offers many opportunities. I am currently an 8th grader and have enjoyed my time here. The teachers are amazing. The school food is meh at best for being public school food. What I would like to see change is the availability of afterschool clubs. At our school, clubs are mostly done during AE (Academic Enrichment). While this is great, if you have an elective you miss out on the clubs. I also believe more can be done to improve school spirit. Senior: Greyfriars is a school that teaches communication, debate, critical thinking, politics, reading, writing, and analysis skills. This school will not only teach academic topics but also prepare you to defend your faith, have strong opinions, carry yourself in respectable ways, and give you the tools to be strong enough to endure the sins of the world. The Greyfriars faculty are always challenging you to do your best and encourage you to pursue academic success. Lastly, the students are incredibly supportive and always push you to step outside your comfort zone. The students are responsible, stepping up in leadership, and making wise decisions when socializing. The students support each other in their endeavors, attending their friend's sports events and reaching out to help each other when needed. In my experience, when my mom was diagnosed with cancer my class of 16 seniors created a meal train for my family. They delivered home-cooked meals for my family during chemo treatment weeks....
