Parent: Our son went to Williston last year for a repeat junior year. Though his public-private high school in Vermont offered ample opportunities, the Covid experience had impacted his academic sequence and experience. He'd also come to realize Vermont's competition levels and potential for exposure didn't align with his aspirations for next-level play. Williston came well-recommended by a college friend whose son had been their for a few years, especially for its community. Even more than meeting our expectations for the sports, we were thrilled to see the community and academic experience energize him to new levels. Senior: Amherst Regional High School has strong spirit and some of the best teachers in the nation. We're highly competitive in almost every sport, and among the highest ranking in academics. My experience of the school has been tarnished as of late as recent gravely unnecessary lawsuits have decimated our funds and teachers, and politics have frequently trespassed into the classroom, even into our lessons. It is a highly polarized between people of different viewpoints, something which is interfering with the intended purpose of the school, to educate. Despite the factionalized, crisis-ridden nature of the school at the moment, I am confident we will realize just how petty and wasteful we've been and pull ourselves together in the coming years.... Senior: Overall Longmeadow High School was a very immersive educational experience. I was very involved in the school throughout my sophomore to senior year and I truly believe that was the reason for my success and excitement throughout my academic and social life at LHS. I felt I had a student voice and was able to create some progressive changes! I love collaborating with students and faculty which created a deeper connection and trust with my classmates and administration. However, I would like to see a more diverse educational experience including sharing other cultures and historical figures not just the typical figures we all know and love. I have learned about more trailblazers through clubs and outside organizations that deserve to be shared and taught in school systems. Parent: A+ experience so far! Our child has attended Hartsbrook for a couple years now in Early Childhood. We came into the school hoping they'd be able to accommodate sensory issues with our child, also knowing that a Waldorf education is practically designed to comfort the nervous system. The teachers have been absolute angels. I adore how they meet each child as individuals and don't try to change them; they work with their strengths and build them up. They listen and support the children, who absolutely ADORE their teachers. To boot, you can't beat the community, which is like joining a family. School events are magical, everyone knows one another and is welcoming, and you always know other parents are looking out for your child. Senior: PVCICS has a great education program. Being such a small school all the teachers are able to get to know each student, giving them 1 on 1 attention, and being able to stop and answer any questions as needed in class. Students have a very close community along with each other and teachers throughout the building and multiple grades. The work load is a lot and can be very stressful. However the opportunity to learn Chinese is very cool and they have a great program, especially if you start in Kindergarten, to help students pick up the language quick. As far as offerings outside of academics, there are many different clubs available to high schoolers. The sports program is slowly growing and we have many amazing teams that are doing very well and increasing in strength every year. The school does put on some fun events throughout the year, such as movie nights, prom, etc., but those are also limited. Senior: The environment at GMHS is perfect from your first day freshman year to your last day of senior year. I enjoyed my time in this school creating hundreds of memories with my peers and teachers. Parent: Hampden Charter School of Science West offers a wonderful learning atmosphere. The administration is extremely dedicated to helping all students reach their academic and athletic goals. The students are not just a number, they are truly cared about. Teachers respond to communications extremely fast and with a high level of thoughtfulness. It is a college prep school that assists its' students with a hands-on approach to the college application process. HCSS consistently shows their forward momentum by trying to offer more extra curriculars and athletic programs. They also offer an array of AP courses that can be taken starting Freshman year. lastly, HCSS's approach to safety is top notch. Security guards are onsite daily, safety procedures are practiced (ie. drills) and there is clear visitor protocol. Parent: Our introduction to PVCA began when my son was approaching kindergarten age. We wanted to find the best fit for our family, and we found it at PVCA. From the first time we walked through the doors, and every single time since, we have been welcomed with open arms by everyone - staff, faculty, students, parents. I especially like that it feels like a family. For my only child, that is especially important - that he have role models who are an extension of our family at home. My child has grown and bloomed in every way, thriving in this environment where the teachers truly love and care for each student. Before the school year even began we got a letter from the teacher saying that she was praying for our children and that their year in her classroom would be blessed. The curriculum is top notch and the environment is so positive and encouraging. The opportunities for learning within the classroom and beyond are amazing. Senior: There's also tension between agriscience students and normal students, particularly after a couple of incidents where ag students were recorded saying racial slurs. The school announced that they would take efforts to create a more inclusive school environment, but nothing has really come to fruition. Some teachers don't sign permission slips for field trips, but teachers are mostly either nice or uninvolved, but administration rarely supports students. There are numerous clubs and activities, though the published list is not maintained and includes several clubs that no longer run and do not have a teacher to lead them. Athletics are popular, with around one-quarter to one-third of each grade participating in sports, but games are mostly unattended. For a public school in this area, it's above-average (in safety, student activities, etc., mostly due to the FFA magnet program), but not stellar by any means. Senior: Minnechuaug is a great school! All of the teachers are very helpful and supportive. It is a very big school with a diverse cultre. There is a lot of support for the students, the class sizes arent too big, and the work isnt too much depending on the teacher. Parent: If you are looking for a Challenging curriculum, dedicated and attentive teachers and staff, with some of the best Sport coaches in the area HCSS is the school for you. I have a son who graduated in 2020 and is now thriving in WNE mechanical engineering program and a current 8th grader in the honors program. Both of my boys want to go to school everyday, enjoy the challenging courses and play/ed three varsity sports. They have made great friends, gained mentors and are being prepared for college. In the very few times where we have had a curriculum or student behavior issue, it has been address quickly and to our satisfaction. I have found that when a student or parent brings issues to the teachers or administrators attention in a respectful manner with realistic expectations they meet or exceed what is necessary to address those issues in a timely manner.
