Sophomore: The Early College at Guilford has a great community and great teachers. Although the trailers aren't the best, the environment overall is great. The school has an atmosphere towards academics. The first two years, especially Sophmore year, are the hardest because of AP classes, although you can get a lot of credit. Parent: Salem Academy has been a great opportunity for my daughter. Salem Academy provided a rigorous academic schedule tailor made for my child. Being able to take college classes on site really enhances the individual needs of each student, and the ability to dive deeper into their personal journey. Senior: GDS is an extremally nice and well rounded school. It is packed with challenging courses and great faculty and staff who work diligently to ensure that students are ready for college and obtain the opportunity to pursue their own path. With that said, as someone who has attended the school for six years now, coming in seventh grade, I find that the school has it's weaknesses. To start the food at GDS is not what it once was, while it is still superior to that of the public schools in the area the cost to quality and meal size ratio is unsettling. In addition there is a very noticeable lack of school spirit from the student body, and while the school and a hand full of student are working to raise school spirit it is still something to be addressed. Ultimately GDS is a great school and community that is very close and will not only prepare you for what is next but also allow you to form strong long lasting bonds with class and school mates.... Alum: I came to FCDS in Jr. Pre-K which means I have spent 14 years at this school. The teachers are great and they really do care about providing quality education as well as being there for students in a more personal capacity. The overall educational experience has been very good and I feel that attending FCDS has adequately prepared me for college. I do feel, however that FCDS lacks in terms of preparing students for real life and the workforce. FCDS provides little health, personal finance, and other real world classes. Senior: I have attended this school for 3 years now and it has been an amazing and unique experience. The office staff is extremely nice and helpful and the teachers are exceptional with their courses. The teachers have taught both honors & AP classes very well and I passed every class and exam. The opportunities were also endless in terms of clubs and service-learning. The environment is welcoming for new students and there is diversity everywhere. Since it was a small school, I was able to develop a relationship with every student in my class. Within a few days of my first year, it felt like family. By junior and senior year, I attended college classes at the university which helped with college readiness. Now, I can transfer credits and save lots of money in college! The only drawback was that our school did not offer arts or sports which is something that I would like to see differently. Senior: Early college is like no other traditional high school or magnet school it’s in its own category Early college is the best decision I could’ve made. Going into early college all the upperclassman were always nice and always wanted to help you navigate around the school. Junior: I love it here! there are great opportunities that are offered, that you won't find at a "normal" public high school you are district to. There are incredible artists here with amazing talents. The students are very well mannered and there are little disruptions in class if any. There are not as many class options as it is a small school, therefore not many AP class options. Senior: The school afforded me all I needed to be prepared for my next chapter which is college. From the diversity of students, activities on campus and the involvement and concerns from the teachers and administration. I felt that I could go to them and they were literally wanted me to achieve. Also the location of the school was also a great factor because I didn’t have to travel far to get there. It only took me 10 minutes to get there because the school was located in my neighborhood. This was so convenient because I didn’t have to be stressed 😩 by being caught up in daily traffic which makes a difference to be prepared to learn when you’re in school most of the day. I also was a cheerleader which I loved. The team was diverse and we felt like a team! I can look back on my high school at Atkins as a positive experience that met my overall needs as I enter my next chapter to attend college. Senior: I started my time at Westchester in 5th grade and have attended for eight years now. Overall, my experience was great. Some of my teachers, specifically my English teachers and Film teacher, have changed my life for the better, and I will forever be grateful for the advice, care, and knowledge they've given me. My fellow students, and friends, have also been amazing. I did experience many different friend groups throughout my eight years, but I am grateful to each and every person I spent time with, each of them shaping a piece of me. The only real thing I'd like to see changed at Westchester is better communication between the students and faculty, a more open connection being made. Yes, it is possible to schedule meetings with faculty to speak with them, but it doesn't always feel like change/progress is made after said meetings. Senior: Personally, I did enjoy my high school experience at Northwest, but their is still a lot that could be done to improve the school. There are a lot of teachers that are excellent and invested in their work, but their are also some teachers that are very poor at either controlling their classroom or getting work done. The facilities such as the bathrooms, drinking fountains, and mobile classrooms are horrible. Although I see janitors working all the time who are invested in their work, the school still has trouble keeping clean at times (mostly in the bathrooms). Also the school is way too overcrowded, so much so that there wasn't enough desks for students at the beginning of the year. Most of the faculty is great! However, Northwest doesn't have the best pride (we stopped having pep rallies because very little people would participate). Parent: I have had 2 children attending Arts Based School. I love everything about the curriculum and faculty. My children enjoy the environment and exposure to the arts. There are sacrifices, however. No school cafeteria. No school buses. And not the most diverse population. However, what the school lacks in diversity it makes up for in open mindedness. Senior: Bishop McGuinness is a great high school because the faculty know you personally and are always there for you. Anytime I struggled or miss something in class any teacher would gladly step up and help me. Bishop is also a very welcoming school. From the moment I walked through those doors as a freshman the people around me felt like family. The counselors at Bishop are extremely helpful throughout all your four years and especially during the process of applying to colleges. Junior: The teachers are excellent! One can have all other characteristics be awful, but the teachers are simply the highlight. It reminds me of medieval scholastic scholars and the founding of the first universities, where pupils would eagerly sit at their tutor's feet. With a very small class size, it's much easier to interact intellectually with not only the teachers but also other students. Parent: We are very happy with NGFS as it provides a forward-thinking environment that supports a growth mindset for learning. Our child is currently in the middle school and has been attending NGFS since the first grade (Rainbow). The teachers are invested in the students, and provide curriculum that is engaging and academically challenging. The in-classroom learning, as well as outside learning is thoughtful and engaging. It is very rare to have a school that encourages for kids to be outside, and I can’t say enough good things about the balance the school provides for this ranging from both indoor & outdoor PE, outdoor classroom activity, lunch and breaks. Senior: One thing I love about the Yadkin Early College is that we are given the opportunity to get ahead in our education. I love the fact that we can take both high school and college classes at the same time. Another thing I love about the Yadkin Early College is that all students are treated like adults and are given a lot more freedom as opposed to a regular High School. I also love that everyone at the Yadkin Early College knows each other; We are like one big family there. Everybody gets along with everyone. One thing that I would like to see changed at the Yadkin Early College is some teacher's grading policies. Some teachers at the school are very harsh when it comes to grading. Other than that I think the Yadkin early college is a fantastic School that gives everyone an amazing opportunity.
