Junior: Greenhills is a diverse, tight knit community that has really helped me become more confident in my artistic abilities, writing, and performance overall. It's a really small school which makes it great for individualized learning and opportunities. This is only further enhanced by the array of diverse voices being heard. The literary classes in particular showcase some amazing books on diversity and inclusion. My main gripe with the school is its lack of diverse education resources- it isn't great at providing aid for neurodivergent kids. Some teachers also don't properly use the homework website and neglect updating or even showing grades for each academic term. Personally, the small student body has helped me grow to be a more confident individually but, it does get a bit boring and monotonous to just see the same people everyday. Sophomore: Besides the fact that WIHI a FREE IB school, the diversity and inclusion it has is also one of the best aspects about being a student there. There are students from many different countries, ethnic backgrounds, and identities, and this creates a more socially pleasant environment that allows each individual student to learn and grow with their peers. In regards to the curriculum, WIHI makes sure to challenge its students with frequent assessments, but at the same time gives many no-homework weekends, as well as multiple opportunities to ask teachers for additional instruction. WIHI also has many events spread throughout the year, such as EDJI day (equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion), field day, and career day, along with more common activities such as Homecoming and Prom. One of my favorite aspects about WIHI is the unique curriculum it offers, with classes such as psychology, global politics, ATL (approaches to learning). Senior: I transferred to Huron High School before my sophomore year from my former high school in Ohio. I noticed a massive difference in the work and environment. Going from a standard learning school to an IB school (international baccalaureate) was very challenging because I wasn’t just switching place of education I was switching styles of teaching, learning, and working. The environment also changed, my current school is more diverse than the one in Ohio. I’d say I favor administration and the school rules in Ohio more, as well as the feng shui and architecture of the school. My current high school has no windows in the hallways and it gets really stuffy and crowded. Junior: I have been School since I was in pre-K, so naturally this became my second home. The teachers are like my aunts and uncles and they care very deeply about my education and are very passionate about what they teach to every student at the school. Alum: Community highschool was a safe haven for me. I have struggled with school (from dyslexia), but that didn’t stop me from thriving there. The teachers and faculty fostered a safe environment to learn in the best way for your own development. Going to community led me to be independent, motivated, and capable of handling several thing at once with wonderful coping mechanisms. Senior: Pioneer is an alright school. It can be pretty competitive and that competitiveness comes with the immense amount of opportunities you have to strengthen your academic portfolio here. With AP classes and honors programs, you have many opportunities to grow as a student. However, speaking from my personal experience as an African-American student, Pioneer lacks diversity in its student body and its teachers. Parent: After a few months of online schooling and many tears, we were desperate to find an in-person alternative to the anxiety inducing situation we were in. Our 9 year old son and almost 5 year old daughter have been attending the lower school since January and we are extremely pleased and feel so fortunate to have landed there. Our sensitive son’s anxiety level has been lowered significantly, and he really responds to the learning style there. He is thrilled to be learning cursive and German and knitting, and also seems to really appreciate the extra outdoor time and learning about nature and Native American stories in addition to his times tables and long division. Our nearly 5 year old daughter’s imagination is put to great use every day and she has also become quite the little finger knitter! The environment is nurturing and thoughtful. Senior: Washtenaw Technical Middle College is an amazing school for diversity. I have noticed that the teachers actually care about their students and make sure that their student have the best professors. The staff loves to motivate and make sure students are passing classes. Whenever I was stuck in a class or felt unmotivated my base advisor was such a big help and helped me. WTMC just wants the best for their students and I love how they take their students mental health seriously. I really recommend this school for people! Senior: Saline High School is a school that cares about the success of its students and provides many opportunities for peer-to-peer and peer-to-teacher aid. The school has extremely nice facilities for academics, sports, and theatre, and allows for students to grow in areas outside of academics. Saline High School has been faced with multiple racist allegations, however, I feel the school has done its best to work with the Black Student Union in order to get their voices heard in the fight for equality.
