Parent: I am constantly recommending The Stony Brook School to my family and friends because it is such a wonderful place. My daughter has thrived and become a more confident learner. She enjoys going to school each and every day! The teachers challenge her while offering support any time she may need. The faculty, staff and coaches are top notch and really care for their students and want them to succeed. She has grown tremendously both as a writer and reader. Socially, she has made many sweet and caring friends at SBS. There is a strong sense of community among students, faculty, staff and parents. The Stony Brook School hosts numerous events both on and off campus. The schools motto of Character Before Career is truly evident and embraced by all. Alum: I attended the Knox School myself and my niece and nephew are current students at Knox. I highly recommend the school to any parent seeking a school that helps each student become the best version of themselves. Not only is the academic program stellar, but there is a great family atmosphere. The amount of individualized attention your child will receive is unparalleled. Parent: Small school. All students are provided with their own notebook. they have a chance to present their performance or learning results in front of the entire school through a program called Morning Meeting once a week, most students get this opportunity very often and stand in front of them, and there is a great advantage that they can always present all of them evenly without leaning towards specific students. Parents who worry about the small number of students do not need to do so because they are connected to libraries, firefighters, PTAs, and school events are scheduled every week, providing children with opportunities for a variety of activities. Senior: I am immensely grateful for the diverse experiences that are available at Ward Melville, ranging from an amazing Science Olympiad team to the incredibly skilled Chamber Orchestra or the fantastic Art department with a plethora or drawing, painting, graphic design, ceramics, and sculpture classes available to students. However, my one major complaint about the school has more to do with the atmosphere rather than the school itself -- the school has an immensely competitive nature that can feel isolating to students, especially for first-generation students like myself who come from a very different background than the majority of students at Ward Melville. Sophomore: As a student who has graduated through this school it is a very welcoming environment and the people are nice. Sure, people can be mean, but that is life and you/your child is going to have to overcome it. It is very welcoming for students with disabilities, mental or physical, and the teachers are good at their jobs for the most part. It has a great team of guidance counselors that you can talk with about any issues and coaches are enthusiastic and outgoing. There is a lot of competition in the academic areas and has a great music program. There are many clubs and activities and the school is always trying to help people, no matter what hardships they are going through. Senior: I've heard a lot of complaints about CHS teachers "not caring for the students" but I think they are false. My teachers, especially my HL Chemistry teacher, genuinely cared about our future and gave numerous words of wisdom. Speaking of advices, my College Calculus teacher comes off the top of my head. I found his messages about life valuable and the way he taught us (reassuring that making mistakes are fine) changed my attitude towards learning. One disadvantage I'd like to point out is the quality of the peer. They may be disruptive and even hold back lesson progression. Junior: Port Jefferson middle School was a good environment and the teachers prepared us well for high school. They were also always open to helping us out and held regular extra help sessions. I don’t think anything should have been done differently because I felt completely prepared for what I was expected to achieve in high school. The classes weren’t too easy but also not too difficult and I felt encouraged to be involved in the classroom. I also felt well prepared for the exams that were taken at the end of each year and the teachers were very helpful in getting us ready. There were many review sessions before each exam where they went over the basics for the entire course which I found extremely beneficial.
