Parent: We have two daughters at Holton, both started in the 3rd grade and we are currently working our way through the middle school. We can not say enough good things about Holton. It is a warm loving environment that takes seriously its responsibility to shape its students to be compassionate, well rounded leaders. We see it in all aspects of what the school does. In fact, in every local, national, or global challenge that has occurred in our time there (of which there have been many) the schools response has always been exceedingly thoughtful, effective and in line with its values. Alum: Poolesville high school is a great high school with many different opportunities for it's students. It has a magnet program, thats focused on different rigorous subjects in the school. It was ranked continuously the best public high school on the east coast for a couple of years in a row. They have great clubs that allow students to express their interests in many different fields and subjects. They had extra curricular activities that were diverse. They had a great sports program that would encourage students to exercise and to join sporting teams. I personally had a great time in poolesville. I was a soccer player as well as a student. I was part of the chemistry club, and was also part of the Independent studies program at school in which I received an award for in my senior year of high school because of a presentation. Parent: Rochambeau follows the French curriculum, most classes are taught in French, but it is more an international school with IB options. Our daughters have had classmates from endless countries (around 70 represented). It prepares our children to live with others that have different cultures, languages, experiences, and religions ... in other words, it prepares them for their multicultural future. Studying at Rochambeau can be challenging at times, because of the high academic level of the French system, but this high amount of work will also depend on the (many) options that are offered. All of this is also balanced by a great School's sports teams program which is a fantastic experience for our children. Lastly, my husband studied there in high school in the early 90s and he still has many friends that he still sees regularly. Senior: As a senior who has spent all 4 years here, I can say that Whitman is a very solid school overall, but has several significant issues. Academically, the school is very competitive. More often than not, I have felt that the competition is at a healthy level, but it can occasionally be overwhelming. Whitman’s most serious issues are with regard to the social atmosphere, interpersonal conflicts, and administration’s role in dealing with these conflicts. Although this may also be the case at other high schools, I’ve found Whitman to not be the most socially welcoming, especially for people in socioeconomic, racial, or ideological minorities. There’s also a culture of avoidance when it comes to interpersonal conflicts, so people often just avoid each other and don’t discuss their conflicts at all. In one case, a conflict that could have possibly been resolved with a simple mediated discussion went on for more than three years because administration refused to take any substantial action.... Parent: After retaining an educational consultant and searching the entire DMV for the right independent school, we chose Stone Ridge. We were impressed with the school's sprawling campus and Aquatic Center, but fell in love with the all-girl environment and the school's ubiquitous message of empowerment. Our lower and middle school daughters have already formed wonderful friendships and a love of learning! Other: Richard Montgomery is a school from where the best students graduates. I moved to the US in 2020 and my first school here was Richard Montgomery High School, not just because it was close to me but also because the overall rating was really good. The teachers, counselors, and all the other faculty members are just so amazing. Especially my counselor Ms. Erica Lebright, who was so kind, caring, and helpful. As a new student, I faced many problems like understanding the system and much more, but I could make it up with Ms. Lebright's help. Senior: B-CC is a pretty above average school I’d say. My time here was alright, honestly. I enjoyed the amount of activities here, honestly there’s something for everyone and I find that pretty nice! Academics are pretty good and rigorous however I think the culture here can get a bit stressful for any student who cares about going to college. From my personal experience, I found it hard to connect with some of my wealthier peers, many here come from families who have enough money to not have to worry about the price of anything really. Alum: Good Counsel is a great academic institution that provides a diverse culture for learning, growth, and engagement. The teachers and administrators are enthusiastic, compassionate, and passionate about what they do. The administration ensures that class sizes are kept small for great student to teacher ratios. They have great clubs for students to become involved in; like the Entrepreneurship Club, the Key Club, Robotics, just to name a few. The cafeteria food was delicious and varied. Parent: Our son started at the Heights in 8th grade. He was coming from a STEM private school (Nysmith) . Video games and social media and phones were the focus at the last school. Was so disheartening. He has blossomed physically and from a mental health perspective at the Heights. The boys live in the real world! No phones, in person interaction and development of their faith and spirituality. They offer amazing trips for the boys as well. Not sure what the other reviewer is talking about with their math and science not being on par. Our son is advanced math and is far more challenged at the Heights than his previous STEM school. This is a truly special school. None other like it. It is an older building that could use a refresh, but it has what is important to us and is so hard to find these days- building strong values for our children and living in truth.... Parent: I can’t say enough great things about this school! Living in Virginia, I did not think attending a school in Maryland was even possible. The moment we stepped foot in CESJDS, I knew It was the perfect place for my son. It was risky switching schools his Junior year, but it was the best decision we made for him academically, spiritually, and socially. The teachers are very approachable and invested in the well-being of all students. There’s such a tight community and the students share a special bond. My son loves the small class sizes and the close relationships he has made. He loves starting his day with morning Minyan and learning in a pluralistic setting with his Jewish peers. Senior: Going to the Academy of the Holy Cross, I’ve discovered who I am. I loved growing and learning with other young women and sharing different life/culture/ religious experiences with one another. One great memory that I have from Holy Cross is our Holy Cross days! Huge competition between all the grades from 9-12. At the end of the day we all come together as a community and close with a prayer. Even though traditions at Holy Cross do change I hope that everyone’s energy is in the same place! That is something I hope would never change. One thing I would like to see more from Holy Cross are more presentations and celebrations about people cultures. Senior: I got into Montgomery Blair High School via its communication arts program (CAP); although it was super challenging at first, in the end I really found that the teachers in the program helped me grow and find my interests. Blair is the biggest school in the DCC consortium as well and there are so many different people that you can get to know. Once I found my friend group I found school much more exciting and fun! Sophomore: The teachers are really nice and most want to help/see you succeed. The food is pretty low quality and the bathrooms are always dirty (though no fault of building service, rather students themselves). Having a good football team (which we do) really does help enhance that typical American high school experience, but of course high school isn't always like it is in the movies. We offer a ton of AP classes and the MC2 program, so academically we're pretty good. We have a lot of extracurriculars too, which is nice. Parent: WWS is an extraordinary place! The dedication and commitment of the staff and faculty is unmatched. I'm amazed with their tireless work to create an inspiring and loving environment for all the kids. We've been attending classes since our son was 6 months old - starting with the parent/child classes. He's now attending his second year of Waldorf in the Woods, which was been such a beautiful experience. It's rich traditions, cultivation of imagination and reverence for nature are touchstones needed more than ever. The way they've worked to handle the pandemic is a marvel. They planned early and worked around the summer to develop a safe school environment. Their renovations and improvements have been impressive. Senior: The Barrie School is a very diverse high school in terms of the student population. The diversity between faculty and administration is definitely lacking. Since the staff is not very diverse students of color often experience many microaggressions. The school's academics are solid because they have a creative curriculum that uses a project-based learning approach. The student-to-teacher ratio is quite small which allows students to truly get one-on-one attention if they need it. Since the student body is so small the school is not great for socializing and activities. In terms of college prep, they have a specific college counselor that helps students with the college process throughout their high school career.
