Alum: At Groton, I feel that I have been able to become a more independent and conscientious person during my time at this school. The best thing about this school is the resources that it provides the students. Here, I feel that I can be whoever I like because the teachers, dorm parents, coaches, and community is supportive of everyone's quirks, interests, and dreams. The teachers are approachable and dedicated, and work hard to provide students with a positive experience and I have made some of the truest and most diverse background friends. However, while at my time here, I have noticed that there is a toxically competitive culture here. Moreover, sometimes it is hard to get leadership positions in clubs because one has to be "connected" or popular, and the unsafe hook-up culture NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED! Alum: I loved it! I was a boarder and there was almost always something to do. It is in a great location where you are secluded enough to have your own fun but also a 30-minute train ride from Boston. The teachers are overqualified and highly passionate. The students feed off of the teacher's excitement and are eager in the classroom. It was a somewhat demanding education, but it was only ever as hard as you made it as you basically had full reigns over all your courses and activities. If you were ever struggling academically or mentally there were many resources and people willing to go outside of the community to help you. Senior: This is my seventh year at BB&N, and I have loved attending the school. The teachers all care deeply about their subject and the student experience. Every year I have at least two who completely captivate me and make me look at issues/problems in a different way. Students also have fantastic opportunities to participate in clubs and gain leadership, and I have enjoyed involving myself in the arts, athletics, and in the high school's multiple student publications. Especially with the administration's recent focus on community-building, I've always found opportunities to integrate myself among new friends and enriching extracurricular environments. Parent: We have been very pleased with our Rivers experience. In addition to offering excellent academics and extracurricular opportunities, the school is committed to student wellness. There are two full-time counselors available, and the student-faculty advisor system provides an additional layer of support. We found the school to be extremely supportive of our child when they experienced anxiety during the pandemic. Senior: Yeah, Lexington high school is stressful. Not necessarily because of our academics (though many of our teachers are Ivy/t20 grads) but because of the students. We’re very competitive, and there’s an external drive/stress culture depending on who you hang out with. It’s very common for us to send most of our class (even the “popular” and “slacker” kids) to top schools for their major. We have no school spirit but that never mattered to me. Not many people attend football games or care about traditional high school popularity, which is refreshing. And our school is so big that you will definitely find your crowd. Finally: yes, we’re known for our bad mental health, as expected from a top high school. But many teachers are really understanding of your circumstances, so don’t be afraid to reach out to them! Parent: My son has had an incredibly positive experience at Lawrence Academy. The teachers are wonderful and nurturing; and the advisor program encourages involvement and good study habits. Sophomore: North is pretty good, mostly because of the funding and the fact that it's in a more middle to high income area. Sometimes incidents happen but that's to be expected in a high-school. Feels safe and has cool and good classes with Kostya good teachers. The facilities are mostly clean, although sometimes there might be some shenanigans in there. Sophomore: Hopkinton is a very academically driven school. There is not much pressure from teachers but most kids are very motivated. Teachers (for the most part) are very helpful and understanding. A good range of sports are available for boys and girls, including some very accomplished teams. The arts and music programs are very diverse, offering a wide range of choices for students. There are also many clubs on all sorts of topics. Overall, Hopkinton is a great school to be a part of. Sophomore: Very hard classes offered, there is a huge jump between college (reg) classes vs honors for math and sciences. Sophomore year, there are four different levels of chemistry classes available, and then AP chem you can take the next year. Food is eh, but there is a very wide variety of options. There aren't many trips, nor are there a lot of school-bonding experiences. We don't have homecoming nor senior prom. Parent: Our family has been a part of the Lexington Christian Academy community for five years. Our child is in the Upper School, is thriving and loves LCA. 2020 has been a year like no other and LCA has risen to the challenge to provide an excellent education. When the pandemic hit, LCA was able to pivot to online learning within a couple of weeks. The administration and teachers worked tirelessly to create a learning experience as close to what is provided in-person at LCA. The technology, support, consistent communication to all parents and students was in place. This school year, LCA has been in-person with some remote days. The transition between the two has been seamless. LCA has taken all the necessary precautions to allow students and staff to be in-person at LCA. Sophomore: Unlike many high schools in the area, LS provides students with a "college-like" selection of many courses, such as English. We have about 20 courses to choose from, ranging anywhere from Expository Writing to Modern-British Literature, mostly structured as semester-long classes so students can experience a more diverse educational experience. The teachers are phenomenal, and really take advantage of the flexible curriculum to teach students more than just the required. The counseling department is also stellar, really making me feel more prepared and less stressed about college.
