Senior: I really love Maui Preparatory Academy because it starts to feel like a family. Since the class size is pretty small it allows you to know your classmates and teachers really well. You have the ability to make really close friends and form connections with your teachers. I have been at this school since Pre k-3 and I am a graduating senior this year. Sophomore: Attending Seabury Hall means more than attending an academically rigorous college preparatory school. Although it is one, attending this school also means being part of the Seabury community. Being located on Maui, Hawai'i, there is a strong sense of island connectedness and once one lives there long enough, they will find familiar faces almost everywhere they go. However, the bond formed with my fellow classmates at this school reaches far deeper than that. They are my "ohana" or family. Seabury Hall, in addition to having advanced academic classes, an extensive arts department with ample resources for exploration and growth, and a wide array of technological opportunities, makes sure to create a strong sense of connectivity between the students and teachers. Senior: I enjoyed the environment at Kihei Charter and appreciated the doors that it opened for me. During my sophomore year, I had the privilege of enrolling in my first college course, which was a stepping stone for my academic growth. I was truly fortunate to benefit from the school-funding which covered half the course tuition. I firmly believe that other high school should take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. Throughout my academic years, I wished for a more structured and organized school experience. Despite the best efforts of my educators, I often found a lack of direction and guidance. The scheduling of classes posed a consistent issue at the beginning of each year, and it wasn't uncommon for issues to persist until the second quarter. I strongly believe that a more comprehensive and thoughtful approach to planning and organization could have greatly enhanced the schools productivity and overall quality. Alum: Maui High School's main motto is "College and Career ready", and I believe that they effectively managed to apply it into the student's high school experience. I had greatly enjoyed the choices and resources that MHS provided to us; a multitude of CTE elective courses, as well as programs for college such as AP Courses, AVID, and Running Start with University of Hawaii Maui College, to prepare students toward the college route as well. Their curriculum and resources immersed students into many student-led activities, tasks, events, and extracurriculars such as; mock interviews, academic and community clubs and sports, student counsels, senior project, teen parents program, robotics, DECA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA competitions, and more, even with volunteers from community members and school staff. All of which taught us students many useful skills, boosted our knowledge and networking of the world around us, and gave us the proper tools to succeed on each of our own paths after graduation.... Alum: Kamehameha Schools Maui was an exceptional educational institution based on my 6 years of enrollment. Throughout my years at KSM, I learned values and responsibilities of Native Hawaiian and Christian leaders. I was blessed with many experiences and opportunities every year. My senior year at KSM was my first full (and normal) high school year. due to Covid-19. With the pressure of college applications, scholarships, maintaining my GPA, internships, and extra curricular's, KSM was a helpful hand. Establishing college counselors for each grade was a great decision that KSM made. I was guided into the right directions regarding college decisions and learned how to apply myself to upcoming requirements. One thing I would like to see change within KSM is the curriculum under Hawaiian Studies. I feel that an abundance of Hawaiian studies should be not only offered, but required for students at KSM. Senior: King Kekaulike High School is not like any other high school. This Hawaii school is very small compared to schools outside of Hawaii. They are understaffed and need more teachers, janitors, and cafeteria workers. This school has many values and lessons to offer their students. High school is not easy and this school needs more people & resources who can help the students. The bathrooms are very unavailable to students due to vandalism, sometimes you have to walk t the other side of the school to relieve yourself! The school also doesn't have a good program in place for preparing students for college and the real world. You have to take classes like that on your own. But it should be required. Overall it is considered a great school to send your kid to in Hawaii. But they need to have better disciplinary rules in place, which need to be better than ISS (in school suspension) or at home suspension. Senior: My experience at Lahainaluna has been great, the community and town is just like one big family. Coming from another town on the island of Maui and to go to Lahainaluna and be welcomed with open arms was just a blessing. I wasn’t treated differently, I didn’t have any hard times meeting new people. I was just welcomed, and being able to play football there to just made things better. I was able to make team captain my JV and varsity years of playing. In addition it made things easier to in the class room having brothers I knew from football around. Senior: As a senior of Lāna’i High & Elementary school, I can say for sure that this is a pretty decent school. Students and teachers hold close relationships while also keeping that professional school connection, and students all have their own groups with wildly different tastes. Counselors are very passionate and ensure that students get important work done in regards to college! Some teachers are harder to work with, but ultimately the staff are great. Academics could use work, with a lack of AP or IB classes, and more state funding should go towards sports and other extracurriculars, with many students depending on fundraisers to raise money for activities.
