Houghton Central High School

Alum: Looking back at high school, I had a lot of ups and downs, but who doesn't in high school? I think my overall experience was excellent because Houghton High School is such a caring school. They have great teachers (for the most part) and they really prepared me for college. They aren't necessarily the most diverse school, but I wouldn't say that hindered my performance or experience while in attendance at Houghton High. They are a small school so they don't have the top-notch sports teams or clubs/activities, but I think for a small school, they excelled with what they're given. Overall, I think if you're new to the area and are considering different schools, the Houghton School District in my (slightly biased) opinion, is the best choice.

Calumet High School
#2 Best Public High Schools in Houghton County
- Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium, & Keweenaw, MI

Junior: Calumet is a small, yet welcoming environment. With a town population of around 2,000, the school is by far the best in the Copper Country. Calumet High School offers so much for their students. From their outstanding academics to their sports they go beyond what is expected out of them. They have also teamed up with Gogebic Community College to give their students college classes in place for high school credits, also with a free 5th year, which you leave high school with your Associates Degree. This has helped many students, including me. The teachers are very generous and teach very well, they all try and attempt to make a personal connection with you and make you feel like you belong at Calumet. Calumet is a very safe campus, we have on-campus lunch only, and we don’t even need security surrounding our school, this shows how well our community is. We are just a little town from the UP of Michigan, but we prove to everyone just how special we are.

Jeffers High School
#3 Best Public High Schools in Houghton County

Senior: I transferred to Jeffers High School at the end of eighth grade. I went to a school that was quite bigger than Jeffers. When I transferred to here it was quite a change. It was a good change though! The class sizes are much smaller at Jeffers. For example, I am in a graduating class of 31 students. I think the size of the school is what makes it so great. Pretty much everybody in the school knows each other. I feel like Jeffers has helped shape me into the person I am today. Because of the size, the teachers get to know the students a lot more than they would in a bigger school. I have gotten so much advice and help with what I am going to do after I graduate. I have found life-long friends here. Jeffers is not only a school, but a second home to the students. You are always welcome back if you need help.

Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools

Alum: It is a good high school with very nice people but it seems like they focus way too much on sports and not enough on preparing you for college. I have used some Chemistry and Physics knowledge from high school to help me in those classes at college but that is about all. They don't have any sort of Pre-Calc class or any AP classes whatsoever and taking Calculus 1 my first semester was very tough. They did offer early college which helped with getting some gen-ed classes out of the way but they didn't prepare us for a STEM education very much at all. However, if you were going for a history or English major, I am sure it would have been much more helpful.

Dollar Bay High School
#5 Best Public High Schools in Houghton County
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Area Schools, MI
- 25 reviews
Senior: The teachers at Dollar Bay are amazing. The classes are engaging. The classes are also a smaller size. The school is so small that the students know everyone. There's a few cons to this list though. The text books and technology are all outdated and falling apart, but other than that, this is a great school.

Hancock Middle/High School
- Hancock Public Schools, MI
- 26 reviews
Niche User: Hancock Central High School is a place where all students can feel safe and comfortable while attending school. In my four years of high school there, I heard of/saw next to nothing in terms of bullying, and very little exclusion of students from certain groups/events/activities. The one thing I would like to see more of though is more opportunities for students with special needs.

Chassell Township School
- Chassell Township School District, MI
- 6 reviews
Alum: Chassell Township Schools was the perfect school to grow up in. Not only were the students I went with always there for me, but the staff was readily available in any situation, whether it was just needing someone to talk to or help with homework. I never felt unsafe in all my 13 years attending. I've made lifelong friends in this environment. I knew all 18 of my graduating classes' birthdays, middle names, family names, hobbies and goals. There aren't many students who leave here that had a bad experience or cut all contact with the school and staff. It felt like at least once a week, alumni were coming back to say hi. I was strongly supported in doing sports, high school classes, as well as college studies, while maintaining my position in the National Honor Society and as continuing to be class president.

Senior: I attended the Copper Country Christian School from first grade through my senior year. I loved how small the school was, how caring the teachers were and how challenging the curriculum was. I would certainly recommend this school to anyone!
