Alum: I have attended Greenwich Academy since PC (pre-connecting class) and I can honestly say I had a wonderful experience. Though I do not having anything to compare it to as a "lifer," my overall experience and its impact was positive. Greenwich Academy provided me with a close-knit community and a supportive environment to explore my interests and question the world around me. I am particularly appreciative of the faculty and staff as they were/are so kind, nurturing, and encouraging. Although I did have bad moments while attending this institution, such as dealing with immense anxiety and anorexia due to a culture of rigor and perceived socialital beauty standards, GA has and is currently addressing all issues surrounding mental health and really is trying to improve the culture to be safer and more sustainable for students.... Parent: We have had two boys go through the school starting in pre-K. We are stunned, absolutely stunned by the academic rigor of the school. It is very easy to (sort of) for a school to identify top level 8th graders and see them graduate at the top of the class. It is far harder to identify outstanding 5 year olds. What we have seen at Brunswick is that the top end of the school academically is vastly over represented by those who entered in the early years. To me, that says that the education is excellent. I am also completely stunned that anyone would suggest that the academics of the school is not top notch and that children would be better off going to a boarding school. Parent: My child transferred to SLS from a top public start of her sophomore year. Wow! Zero comparison. The teachers are so fully invested, the entire staff wants your child to be the best version of themselves. Just like with any new experience socially the student has to figure it out. The Advisors try to help with that transition as best they can but it really is up to the student to become involved and find they’re right fit. They all do. Pros: Academically, SLS is incredible. The teachers are not just highly-educated themselves, but genuinely care about their students and inspire them to become curious and continue learning. At King, students do not just learn a fixed curriculum. They also learn to do research, present their findings, collaborate, help each other. They learn lifelong skills and kindness. One needs to experience King in order to appreciate its true value. An outsider tends to look at the curriculum and compare it to public school, then tries to judge. King will do more and more and millions of times better. What is taught will be broader, deeper and more meaningful at King. Junior: Good academics. Not super diverse but a lot of progress made over past couple of years. Couple of strong sports programs. Amazing faculty. Teachers are super attentive, passionate, and will put in the time+effort. Clubs and extracurriculars aren't great but there are still opportunities. Parent: I'm a parent of two current NCHS students. The academics are as rigorous as a private school, and the extracurriculars - in particular sports and theatre - are top notch. Teachers are attentive, and the guidance counselors are responsive. The reputation the school has for academics is a useful one with colleges. Senior: The school overall is very high quality and many of the teachers are amazing and genuinely care about students. However, the student culture is very competitive with a heavy focus on enrollment at an elite college as the highest level of achievement. There is definitely a "Westport bubble" in what students here understand about their lives and their academics in the context of the rest of the nation, but the people here aren't necessarily bad. However, overall, Staples gives access to amazing resources (they invest a ton into extracurriculars such as the theater program, the music program, and the journalism program) and it's definitely a great place to go to school. There are also lots of school traditions, mostly surrounding Homecoming, and people have a healthy school spirit. I am very grateful for my time here. Senior: The teachers at Darien High School are what truly made my experience a great one. Most of them are passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects, and they are available and willing to help the students however possible. DHS also offers a variety of different academic and extracurricular opportunities, including many AP classes, and activities ranging from a literary magazine and newspaper, and honor societies, to varsity sports. Senior: Center for Global Studies is the very definition of a school that has a family-like community. Everyone has the chance to be involved in everything, and the air in the halls is always positive. Everyone I've met is and from day 1, always was, kind as welcoming--both faculty and students. Finally, the emphasis on learning in a school that puts a global spin on everything, with the reminders everywhere you go and in everything do that you are not the center of the world but instead a member of the human race who should work to understand and celebrate both others and yourself....is very meaningful. Parent: South School has been amazing in meeting the needs of my son who has mild special needs. The communication between the teacher, specialty teachers, & myself has be incredible. He has learned so much & has blossomed. My main issues (which may be system wide) are with art & spanish. Being able to observe the curriculum during remote learning, I was shocked to see how anti- creative ART was. It was literally a step by step, follow my direction, lesson. No artistic expression whatsoever. Spanish lessons seemed to jump all over, not having any themes or repetition to them whatsoever; which is crucial for learners in younger grades. Everything I observed in these two particular classes went against everything taught to be best practices for early learners through age 8. If it weren't for these two classes, and the fact that I did not see a single lesson come home pertaining to black history month, I would have given them 5 stars. Middle School Student: I went to East school when I was little and I remember having a great experience every grade I loved all my teachers. Now my brother and sister go there they always come home with new art they did or new skills they learned in gym. East School has so many different events I remember the Fall Fair every fall, I was in the Iditarod and enjoyed being a musher! I made so many friends there when I was little that are still my friends till this day. I love going back every year and seeing my old teachers, and new ones. Junior: The institution definitely has a highly familial atmosphere which I really enjoy! You are able to develop a personal relationship with all the teachers, and nearly all the students are warm and welcoming too. Its a very good place to go to if you value community alongside academics. It also allows for extremely easy access to college credits which I really appreciate. Parent: Pleased with experience . Teachers are great and my children love learning. Big emphasis placed on reading and social development. Love it that children get so much exercise/pe time -- especially good for young boys. Found administration and teachers to be very responsive and always available; communication is also excellent. One huge perk is the "afters" program that they have every day -- for a small fee, your kids can explore their personal and academic passions (or be exposed to them for the first time). One criticism is that I wish they began foreign language exposure earlier and did more for those children who are already bilingual. We toured all the schools in Greenwich and chose to live in this district. Found Riverside and OG to be too elitist for my taste.... Read 4 reviews
