Parent: Malvern faculty and staff have such a special gift tapping into our son's inner strengths. My son went from parochial to public school before finding his home at Malvern. He was quiet and ok with coming to school, doing his best each day. After a few short weeks his team of teachers have worked with him to place him in challenging classes, encouraging his participation in campus events, and stepping out of his comfort zone to explore a student leadership role. His first year provided so much personal awareness and growth. He began his journey learning who he is and how to build on these strengths, as well as recognize where he needs to be challenged. Something we spent many years partnering with outside counselors and teachers in his previous schools with little success. We knew we were missing something and the Malvern staff have been able to help him so quickly and effectively. Senior: Coming to Westtown has been one of the greatest decisions I have made to date. Westtown has allowed me to gain experience in leadership, as well as build strong bonds with my peers and faculty. The academics are challenging, but not to the point where it consumes you, and there is plenty of support for students. I've had the wonderful opportunity to try new things and explore, and I learn more about myself every day while there. The fact that it is a Quaker school also adds a unique experience to Westtown. You don't have to be a Quaker to attend, but religious diversity is celebrated at Westtown, as well as learning about other religions. As a Muslim, Westtown has supported me tremendously throughout the month of Ramadan. All in all, a wonderful experience. Senior: My time at Conestoga High School was a great experience (so far). I am enjoying my time there as I am constantly getting what I need from the resources they offer. Senior: The Downingtown STEM Academy is an extremely rigorous and demanding program. Therefore, in order to be successful individuals must learn good study habits, how to advocate for themselves, good communication and collaboration skills, and how to manage time. Overall, the STEM environment gives off more of a college campus vibe, as opposed to a general high school vibe. The students have a lot of freedom in that there are no hall passes, students are permitted to work outside of the classroom, there's a lot of long-term assignments, and the teachers do not hand-hold their students. The teachers are mostly incredibly supportive, qualified, and dedicated (although as in any school there will always be a few exceptions). The teachers and staff work to provide a safe community and promote good mental health. Due to the rigorous nature of the program, most students suffer from mental health issues, which need to continually be addressed. Overall, DASD's STEM is a great school and community.... Parent: Devon Elementary is an outstanding school. I have three children, and they all love going to school here. The teachers, staff and administrators are excellent and care about our children. The school is very strong in differentiated teaching to meet the individual needs of each student. Not only are the academics top notch, but I also appreciate the school's emphasis on good character, like respect, caring for others and the anti-bullying campaign. As a parent, I love how the teachers regularly communicate with me on how my children are doing in class and the principal/PTO let's us know what is going on at the school. Alum: I remember always being scared to go into high school, I'd be this little freshman that couldn't make friends and had no one to sit with at lunch. That was far from the truth - me and two of my close friends decided to try out for the cheerleading team. That was the best decision I ever made, I grew up doing gymnastics so it was similar, but fell out of love with gymnastics in middle school. Leaning into cheer made my high school experience so much better. I was friends with 30 girls right from the start and got to cheer on the football boys every Friday night. You have to put yourself out there in order to create new long-lasting friendships. Unionville had an atmosphere where everyone was so full of spirit and being there for others. Parent: The Phelps school was perfect for our son, not only academically, but socially as well. He needed more attention from teachers than he could get at any other school. It was very easy for our son to sit quietly, doing the minimum. But, the terrific teachers at Phelps would nicely encourage his participation. His grades improved. And, he's thriving at a major college. Our son also had to participate in activities that he would not have otherwise. It added a breadth to his personality and interests. Alum: Great Valley was a good experience, overall. It could use some work in terms of diversity, but I was lucky to receive the quality education that it offers. I felt well-prepared moving into collegiate life, and I believe that they gave me adequate resources. The counseling department could also use some work. If you wanted resources to prepare you beyond high school, you really had to take it upon yourself. Something that I wish was talked about more in school is mental health. There was little to no discussion about preparing high schoolers to take on mental health struggles beyond high school in the real world. I think that the school could have benefitted from including more of that. In a competitive and high-performing high school such as Great Valley, mental health is of the utmost importance and should be treated as such. Junior: My teachers are all very nice and do try hard to accommodate for individual learning needs, however my school counselor is very condescending, misogynistic, and comes across as a little racist towards me and some of my peers. He did not believe me or my parents about my ADD diagnosis until he saw my high SAT score and then started to think that we were telling the truth about my diagnosis. However, this came about at the end of my junior year, which is a little unhelpful at this point. In the future, I would love see more steps taken towards helping neurodivergent students that may be ahead of their peers, that still need accomodations to help them fulfill their potential.... Freshman: Rustin High School has been amazing! Due to the unprecedented conditions of 2020 and 2021, I haven't been able to have the true high school experience since I am only a Freshman. I hope next year will be different as a whole. Even though I didn't have the opportunity to receive the full high school experience yet, Rustin is receiving five stars for how it is handling the situation. We are only moving in one direction in the hallways and we have a certain stairwell for up and one for down. The teachers are doing a great job managing the roomers and the zoomers and in the building, we have block scheduling and cohorts.
