Senior: I have gone to Albuquerque Academy since 6th grade. It is definitely a college prepatory school! Every year, the coursework becomes more difficult, but you are also able to choose more personalized classes. The community here is very diverse, and by the end of the school year you are garunteed to know all of your classmates. Because of these small class sizes, it is also nice because you can get much more one on one time with teachers that want you to succeed. I love how easy it is to find your community here. Sometimes, it is stressful because of the high stress levels of trying to be the best academically. He has been in online school for the past 3 years so deciding on a brick and mortar school to go back to was a big decision for us. The inclusivity is apparent from the very beginning. Parent: Bosque School was the perfect place for my son who graduated a couple of years ago. His teachers were experienced, inspiring, and loved their students. The location is gorgeous -- in the bosque around the Rio Grande -- and the school gets students out in the woods doing science experiments, observing plants and animals, and appreciating their wild surroundings. My son was extremely well-prepared for college after graduating from Bosque School. In addition to his academic preparation and his athletic achievements, his experience at Bosque contributed to his social and emotional development so that he was well-equipped to be successful and independent at a major university. Parent: Nex+Gen is the perfect place for any kid comfortable with difference who wants to learn! The teachers are great, the school is well-run, and the clique culture common in larger schools is largely absent, or at least quite muted. You can be different, eclectic, or odd and still be accepted and included. (This includes everything from political outlook to gender identity.) Nex+Gen is an APS magnet school, not a charter, so students and their parents proactively choose to attend it, seeking out a good learning environment. Having to still work within the APS bureaucracy is perhaps the school's biggest challenge, because it can not fix some issues alone, having to rely (at least in part) on district services and policies (from HVAC to IT to discipline policies). The project-based learning model is a breath of fresh air and effective at teaching students both discipline-specific content and soft skills like teamwork and presentation, leaving them well-prepared for careers and college.... Senior: East Mountain High School is a preparatory school that intends to get its students ready for college classes. I love how small my school is and the teacher-to-student ratio. This has helped me get the extra tutoring and grow strong relationships with teachers. Since my school is located in the Sandia Mountains, I feel very safe and happy to be out in nature. I do wish that our school did have a cafeteria, which would increase social interactions and keep from us sitting on the ground. I also wish that we had more diversity in our student ethnicity. Most of our school is White. I also feel like our campus could use a little renovation since we are in big trailers for school. Senior: I loved my four years at La Cueva because the school spirit and community was amazing. They take a lot of pride in their academic and athletic accomplishments. They have great dances, pep rally's, band performances, clubs, teachers, and students. The security guards are super sweet and always make sure students are having a great day.La Cueva also has a great tutoring program for students that need help with subjects they are struggling with.The janitors do a terrific job keeping our school clean and beautiful. Alum: St. Pius X prepared me well, not only for a Ivy League degree, but for life. On top of the academic preparation, a wide breadth of cocurricular classes allowed for exploration into different passions- some of which I still hold, such as film photography and weight lifting. Athletically, the coaches and teammates I was blessed to compete with all touched my heart, many of whom I still keep in touch with. Aside from the great teachers, courses offered, and stellar athletic teams, the diversity of the students and emphasis on living out the Catholic faith taught me to always love your neighbor. I would argue that this aspect is what makes St. Pius X so special. I would always recommend St. Pius for students and parents looking to have a well rounded, wholistic high school experience. Junior: AIMS is an interesting school is the easiest way to put it. The school itself is middle school and high school, yet holds about 600-800ish students. The faculty are close-knit, since it is so tiny, and the students practically stick with the same classmates they met in 6th grade. The academic course is excellent for those who wish to attend UNM afterward since the school is chartered by UNM, as you are required to take 30 college credit hours on top of your high school learning. The course load is best put manageable and is best for those who hold their academics higher than their extra-curricular activities. As it is free and requires you to help out with community service per semester, rigorous science fair and Rube Goldberg competitions, and college classes during high school, it is a niche for students who are willing to go through it, and also comply with dress code.... Senior: I would say it is a great high school to go to, as it is highly academically inclined and is able to teach many different people many different things. It has a really big campus, with several different buildings, some new and some old. A large library and gym, a new baseball field, and a softball field. A football field and a large gravel pit that's extremely fun to run in. There are no real problems, other than the people ditching class all the time. Security is pretty lax and you can literally leave class with no problem. That's the only real problem with this school, but overall, it's a really good school to go to, and I would love to send my children there as well, as my mom went here and I went here. Senior: Eldorado High School has given me a safe place to learn more about myself, create meaningful relationships with like-minded peers, and expand my understanding of the world around me. The best part of Eldorado is the supportive and attentive staff. I struggled during my freshman year and spent the majority of it online because of Covid-19. Despite the major barriers to creating student-teacher relationships brought on by the pandemic, the staff at Eldorado continued to go beyond the curriculum to connect. There were countless check-ins, small group meetings, class discussions, and collaborative work to make the school year as meaningful as possible. Overall, I am very happy with my high school experience and sad to see it coming to an end. If I could change something at Eldorado, I would like to see less vandalism. The school has great activities and school spirit and there is generally no bullying or belittling. Senior: Public Academy for Performing Arts is a great place to pursue your desired performing art whether it is music, choir, dance, film, art or theatre. Getting college prep education from middle school to high school surrounded by students with the same admiration for the arts creates a beautiful, friendly, and creative environment and makes education less overwhelming. In my experience, the best part of this school is the opportunities to discover your true passion and commiting to be the highest standard in that field. I would say the worst parts of my experience would be the lack of funding we had in each program. This held me back from reaching the true potential of each performing art. Senior: During my four years at Vista High School, I can with no doubt say that my experience here has indefinitely shaped me into who I am today. Having said that, I think that the only reason I have such love for my school is because of my level of involvement. I've been lucky enough to be provided with countless opportunities that led to building connections and other aspects that have made me stand out. The overall environment of my school is that of spirit and excitement. The sports games are unmatched and the clubs are something that made my time here so much more. Volcano Vista is filled with talented individuals who strive to make that "high school experience" a reality. There are still fights and other acts of rebellion, but overall I feel safe and can be myself. Senior: Early College Academy is an extremely amazing and challenging school. The teachers are actively involved and always want to help in any way they can. The school activities are student driven (meaning the students are mostly in charge of planning events and the teachers are only there to supervise). Overall, this school gets the students ready for college and gives them a chance to take dual credit classes for free since the school pays for all the books and admission fees the college classes have.
