Senior: Newman is a small private school with a high tuition cost, and because of that, diversity is lacking. But that comes with the territory, and you would face this issue at any private school in Nola. That being said, as a woman of color, I have always felt safe and cared for here, as they does their best to encourage diversity and inclusion. (let it be known that POC students at Newman have very different experiences and the same can't be said for everyone) On the other hand, the school offers amazing opportunities and great academics for students. It's a community in every sense of the word, helping students build relationships and achieve academic excellence with the guidance of their teachers. Each student can feel individually supported and inspired to do their best, and even though Newman isn't perfect, the positives out weigh the negatives by a lot, and compared to other schools in New Orleans, I'm confident in saying that this is the best. Senior: LSMSA is an amazing establishment in regards to the academics and teachers. The Living Learning community is also quite inviting save a few select staff members, but it's easy enough to learn how to work around them. My best experience is life on campus as it's taught me just how little I know about living on my own and has helped me prepare for when I move away to college. Something I'd love to see change is the biases among the staff towards the SLA's, as I myself, as well as many of my friends, have seen the staff receive priority over the students merely because they are the "adults" involved.... Parent: We have children at both the Lower and Upper campuses. At the risk of sounding fanatical, I have to say that I cannot imagine my children not having the "ESA Experience." It has shaped them in wholly positive ways to the extent that in considering how our children are evolving as individuals, I consider the impact of not only "nature plus nurture" but specifically the nurturing received at ESA and how it has played a significant role in shaping my children to be confident, avid learners and well-rounded, open-hearted citizens of the world. Senior: Haynes has been such an awesome experience for me. I didn’t receive a seat until my Junior year, but once a seat finally opened up and I was able to enroll I was able to make friends quickly. The students, teachers and staff were very welcoming and made me feel like I belonged right away. I was able to jump right into talented music and art as well as take part in the productions with theatre. I am so thankful for a public school that has all of these accommodations available to us. The teachers strive hard to prepare us for college and there are many opportunities at Haynes to get a step ahead in planning for our journeys into college after graduation. At the end of my junior year Haynes took us on a trip called junior journey. We were able to travel by bus and tour several college campuses along the way from Louisiana to Tennessee. Senior: Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy is adequately preparing me for the future. I feel like my school is making me successful because of the relationship I have established with my teachers. I have been able to develop a trusting relationship with the majority of my teachers. This allowed me have a stronger engagement with each lesson. Additionally, I feel comfortable going up to my teachers whenever I am dealing with any particular struggle. In terms of academics, I see no need to change anything. The only thing I wish to see changed at Patrick Taylor is the uniform policy. I feel like the uniform policy is too strict and picky. Alum: I really liked going here! I attended this school from second grade until I graduated high school, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I love the friends I made, and the school spirit. The only issues I would say are: the deans and administration are not on your side and want to punish people. Detentions are handed out left and right, dress code is beyond strict, and seniors do not get any privileges. Senior: I have been at Uhigh for 13 years and I have made a lot of great friends and memories! I love my teachers, however, some of them are a little strict over the dress code. Besides my friends, I will miss my teachers the most! I made the best bonds with them and I feel like I can go to them for anything! They care about their students! Your work ethic has to be very strong and high to go here, but it’s worth it in the end because I will have 18 credits when I go to college! I am involved in 10 different fun, welcoming clubs and I am on the women’s soccer team! The Laboratory School provides a lot of opportunities for their students as well. Seniors have the option of getting out of school at 12:40, which is really helpful when there are college applications due. Senior: I adore Sacred Heart, and have since I first came in middle school. My favorite part of coming to school here is the school traditions and culture. Rally, St. Philippine, Mater, Gouter, and so many others is what draws me to Sacred Heart. That, and the community. What's so wonderful about my grade in particular is that we are so different, but act just like sisters. We never sugar-coat our experiences and there have been fights, but we always make up and, no matter what, will always be there for one another. The only thing that needs to change is our music and arts offerings. As a student interested in arts as a career, it feels like the arts are always shafted by the athletics (which are phenomenal). Alum: This school transformed me as a person through the involvement opportunities of a small school, the teachers’ genuine care and devotion, and rigorous academic challenges. Speaking with a couple years of college under my belt so far, it was a lot easier to make the transition because the coursework we were doing at CES was already college-level, and to this day I feel more prepared to take on more advanced work. There was never a boring day at CES, it is such a lively and unique culture. I especially enjoyed the arts and drama programs and feel like they are one of the school’s greatest strengths. The campus is beautiful and I truly felt safe and at home there. Alum: My overall experience at Caddo Parish Magnet High School was amazing. As an incoming freshman, I was placed into classes tailored to my academic level, and had the opportunity to improve throughout all four years. All of the teachers had their own unique way of teaching, and all were very focused on preparing the students for college and for life after high school. My favorite thing about the school was the environment. Everyone is welcomed, and you can be who you want to be without fear of being judged. When you come to Magnet High, you feel at home. The worst thing I could say about the school is the amount of homework I was given, and nobody likes homework to begin with! Also, I realize now it was to prepare us for what was to come in college (especially with time management and preventing procrastination), so I am thankful for it. Senior: I have been a student at Ascension since Pre-k 3 and I can say that until recently I have loved all parts of my school. Recently there has been some issues with teachers about how they teach and how when I struggle I am forced to hire a tutor instead of being directly helped by the teacher. But, overall that is the only bad thing I can say about Ascension. I have made so many lifelong friends and have a good time everyday at school. Although I struggle with some teachers there are also others that I absolutely love and can’t wait to go to their class everyday. I just think that the way teachers act about students when they are struggling needs to change (not all teachers are bad when it comes to this issue only a few). Senior: I have attended Berchmans Academy for 4 years, and I love it. The student enrollment is very small, and to most that may seem like a terrible thing, but actually it is the exact opposite. The low enrollment number allows for the students to have very close friendships with each other. With Berchmans being a low enrolled K-12 school, upperclassman know the lowerclassman and even the young kids on a first-name personal basis. Due to the low enrollment numbers, the students are given more one on one time with teachers. The teachers and all of the other staff are all awesome. The teachers are passionate about what they teach, which makes a huge difference in the learning environment. There are always new advancements coming into the school, whether it is a new lunch service or as simple as a new club. One major takeaway when I look back at my time at Berchmans, was that I was always respected by everyone, whether that be faculty to students. This school will always stay with me in life.... The school went through many teachers in my time there, and different people in the head leading positions at the school which was hard to adjust to. The amount of standardized test prep a student will receive here is unlike any other. There’s a reason we have so many nation merit scholars and ACT 30+ students. Alum: Brother Martin is the best school to send your son to for high school. They will prepare your son to succeed and excel in college. The rigorous courses at Brother Martin made me study and work hard for the grades I wanted and I deserved. They have great resources like test prep where teachers get students prepared to take the ACT. They also have this thing called the Sophomore Writing Assessment (SWA) in English class where they will prepare your son to write an argumentative college-style paper. I graduated from Brother Martin in 2020 with a 3.00 GPA and a class rank of 146 out of 210. Don't let those numbers fool you, Brother Martin prepared me very well for college. I went to Delgado after graduating for a year and a half to get prerequisites out the way. Transferred to the University of New Orleans where I am studying to be a Mechanical Engineer and have a 3.60 GPA.
