Senior: Throughout my 4 years of attending Avon Lake High School, I have seen good and bad throughout the school. Some of the good I see is the students coming together as one. I feel that our student body has good school spirit and shows it proudly, this makes assemblies fun, along with sporting events. Another thing that is the best about our school is the options students have for their classes, I think the diverse options allow you to choose your path more independently as you get further into high school. Some of the worst things about Avon Lake highschool would be, in my opinion, the building itself. Senior: My time at JHS wasn't always the best but overall it is a great school. As with many schools, the people often leave much to desire, but the programs and teachers make up for it. Jackson offers a lot of classes and teachers and counselors are happy to help you get into any class you want! There are many clubs and activities as well as a great sports community to participate in and I've enjoyed trying many of them. I think, at times, Jackson had its faults in handling situations and I wish teachers and staff were even more proactive about dealing with them. But given many circumstances, they often did their best to make sure their students were safe. Jackson does need to work on its control of bullying and discrimination. Even if there isn't much they can do, there is always something, even if it's small, that can help the situation. Senior: Overall, I think I will look back on my high school years with satisfaction. Avon High School allowed me to join a community of not only supportive friends but also teachers. The friends I've made I can easily foresee being life-long ones. Even though I'm not in their class anymore, I still go back to see the teachers that made class enjoyable while still providing me the resources necessary to succeed. As for what needs to change? Cliques are super present within the school. While I was lucky enough to join a group, those who are left in the shadows have a hard time getting out in an environment that fosters established groups. After a point in high school, there seems to be some sort of social stigma about meeting new people. Alum: Saint Joe's is a place to learn and grow. As a freshman, it is hard because you are learning all these new traditions. Sophomore year goes quickly, and you feel a bit more connected to the school. Junior year is very stressful, but you learn to adapt and lean on your friends. I was on the student council my senior year. I love this school. It prepared me for college in so many ways. It is a school that gives you a realistic view of the world. Senior: I think the best part of my high school experience is how many different friends I’ve made from everywhere. Most kids in the district are very open to everyone, as long as you’re nice and accepting you’ll be ‘popular’. Although we didn’t have a girls team for my sport, I did have the opportunity to play on the co-Ed hockey team. My school didn’t discriminate on who you were and most everyone had the same opportunities. If there wasn’t a club you wanted, you could easily make one. I can’t say it was as high end as a private school but it’s definitely on the higher end of public school. Senior: Lake has been a fun part of my life and theres been many up and downs. In high school I’ve always strived to achieve good grades. I’ve sustained at least a 3.75 GPA or higher throughout high school. I’ve faced many emotional and physical challenges, but I don’t let them affect my academics. During my Junior year, I had two extensive wrist surgeries operated on me to fix fractures that occurred during a football scrimmage. These surgeries led to me missing a combined three weeks of school and exams to make up. I had to teach myself an alternate way of writing and typing. After missing three weeks of school I was able to come back and finish my 1st semester with a 3.833 GPA. Sophomore: The best parts of Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School are the teachers and the classes. Instead of having AP classes, we have classes such as programming, Multimedia, and Robotical engineering. Going into 11th grad you choose your pathway which helps further prepare you for college. The pathways include; STEM, health, Agriculture, Engineering, Tech, and education. We have many group projects and we are always working together. The worst parts of Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School are that there isn't any sports, bullying isn't taken care of, and some of the courses are less advanced than others such as the math course. Many kids in my grade failed the last Ohio State Math test because the school didn't prepare us enough for it. Our school has a bullying and harassment form but once you fill it out they don't really do anything about it. The school also doesn't offer any sports because kids come from schools from all over. Junior: Hoban is a great school. Most teachers care deeply about students inside and outside of school. I feel valued as an individual. They do need to work on including students with disabilities and following IEPs. I have physical disabilities and although teachers care administrators can be difficult to work with to excuse absences and update plans. Most teachers are fine and do tell me they care about me and hope I feel better. The academics are rigorous and challenging but there are many resources to help students academically. The sports and clubs build community and relationships. Many of my friends come from clubs and my sport bowling. Hoban says they are a family and they are, everyone cares about each other and wants the School to do well. We have challenges like a real family but overall Hoban is a great school....
