She enjoys going to school each and every day! The teachers challenge her while offering support any time she may need. The faculty, staff and coaches are top notch and really care for their students and want them to succeed. She has grown tremendously both as a writer and reader. Socially, she has made many sweet and caring friends at SBS. There is a strong sense of community among students, faculty, staff and parents. The Stony Brook School hosts numerous events both on and off campus. The schools motto of Character Before Career is truly evident and embraced by all. Senior: I cannot portray how excellent this school truly is. As a current student of Ward Melville, I can say that there is no better school in Suffolk county. The teachers are very good at their jobs and provide many resources for students to improve. There is an absurdly large amount of clubs that the school provides -- all run by the students themselves. The sports is also a wide variety of sports that will allow many to reach out and make more friends while having fun competitively. Along with this, many of the top students of each graduating class are able to continue their studies at Ivy Leagues or highly competitive schools. Not only are the extracurricular's outstanding but there are over 23 AP classes offered by incredible teachers -- this was most impactful in my high school career. Senior: I liked the overall interior of the school and the majority of my teachers were very nice and supportive! I felt like I could go to them if I needed help with something. There was also little to no bullying among students, which is pretty rare in schools. The school is a little difficult to navigate because a lot of hallways look exactly the same, but once you get the hang of it it’s not so bad. If I disliked any teachers, it was a personal dislike. I would advise against taking the Media Arts course though, since it is extremely outdated and barely teaches you any skills you can use (especially if you were already studying film, art, and animation).... They whole-heartedly work with us to assist us with any problematic situation that may arise, keeping safety at the forefront of their priorities. They exhibit a sincere concern for our well-being, in all aspects, physically, emotionally, as we as academically. The school offers a lot of AP and honors courses, as well as extracurricular activities and sports. This starts from 8th grade, where they offer an "advanced" track by taking 9th grade Algebra. They also offer PLTW (Project Lead The Way) for students who do not wish to take the advanced track. This latter option still offers fun and exciting ways to experience, partake in, and learn STEM courses and activities. Senior: Coming from the South Bronx to a small town on the north shore of Long Island was a big move. I came to this town into this high school not knowing anyone. When I got here it felt like a maze. It’s so big, there’s people willing to help you everywhere you go. You build relationships with the teachers and they’re always there when you need them. I’ve even made great relationships with teachers I never even got to have myself! Unfortunately, there isn’t much diversity compared to my school in the Bronx, but there is so much opportunity for you to excel. Sophomore: Mount Sinai is a good school, even with its flaws. Most of the teachers care about the kids and try to engage their students in class. Senior: As a soon to graduate senior, I have had all the resources needed to succeed and supportive teachers to help me on the way. The school’s staff is great and the majority of the teachers are cool, most more than not. Ive had access to state of the art technology and facilities. The only thing holding me back from giving a full 5 stars is the fact that the seniors have felt a bit neglected this year due to senior privileges being loosely enforced, if even so, such as senior parking being limited due to not cracking down on juniors parking, a senior cafe that any grade level has access to; seniors being forced to eat lunch in a hallway instead of their own cafeteria; and biggest of all, no senior trip. The school advertises their Italy pilgrimage strongly but it only applies to the chorus which the majority is not involved in. Senior: I’m extremely happy to leave this place but 100% the bonds I have made with staff members is what I will miss the most. Most teachers are very willing to help students. That said, many of them are not great at engaging the students in the subject and teaching in general. I enjoy the block scheduling system because you don’t have all your classes every day so you get more time to work on things and get help if you need it. They are ever strict with kids walking around the hallway at all times during the day even if you have a pass. The kids here aren’t super kind and good hearted for the most part, very clique-y and judge-y. Overall it wasn’t a terrible experience and I will miss the people and staff I have made connections with throughout my 4 years here but I would not recommend, there are definitely better schools on the island....
