Alum: I loved the six years that I have spent at Norfolk Academy. The spirit, involvement, and social life were amazing. The resources and academics that this school provides also I believe are second to none. The school taught me how to juggle academics, athletics, social life, and home life. I believe that in that sense, the school prepared me very well for the future. However, I hope the arts programs, including the broadcasting program, improve. Field day was also another event that I enjoyed. Even though I went through some years without field day due to covid, the years that I was able to attend the event were the most fun. As an alum, one aspect of the school that I love is the amount of involvement that the school allows for alums. For example, the academic opportunities such as internships that the school provides are very useful. I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to participate in an internship through them.... Parent: Our daughter is a first year junior at SMS and I can't thank the school enough for the extraordinary experience she has had! SMS knows girls and provides support for all aspects of our daughter's life--academically, socially, spiritually. She has flourished here and I think it is because she feels understood and heard by her teachers and classmates. It really has made a difference in her academic performance and overall well being. The river setting of SMS provides opportunities for water activities, STEM studies, and daily reflection. The sports and arts programs are strong and inclusive. Our daughter is challenged academically and we have seen marked improvement in her writing, analytical, and verbal communications skills. We have been quite impressed by the school's transition to distance learning and community engagement during the coranvirus pandemic. Parent: As a teacher who has taught 12 years in a public school setting, I would have never imagined choosing private school for my sons. After a tough year in kindergarten, my oldest son struggled and didn’t show much academic progress due to large class size. After much thought, I realized that a smaller class size is what he needed to cultivate the best learning environment. After researching all the available private schools here in Southern Frederick County, I was dismayed by the few options nearby. After thoughtful consideration, Barnesville fulfilled all of my expectations as a teacher parent. It provided small class sizes, a great amount of time spent outside, many cross-curricular learning opportunities, and a strong community. The teachers are extra caring and it was evident during our time distance learning.
