Alum: I had been going to Grand Blanc Schools my entire life growing up, from the ages of 5-17. With a high school and a district where hundreds of kids attend it can be a little difficult to obtain help from a teacher or have the chance to 'stick out'. Alongside, the con of needs being met and regulations enforced to stop kids from vandalizing things such as bathrooms, classrooms, lunch rooms, etc. It sometimes felt as if it wasn't necessary. Although there may be cons to attending a public school my time spent at school was overall a welcoming environment in it all. Since so many kids attended my high school there was a huge funding for resources around us that weren't limited to who you were. This included a new football stadium, a woodshop, automotive garage, a wellness center. We were not deprived of much that would stop of from succeeding. Alum: While attending Mott Middle College High School I have learned how to be college-ready through their amazon dual enroll program. Their high school classes offered advanced learning in college readiness and other academic classes such as Science, English, History, and Math. The teachers at this school are just amazing and easy to talk to when you need help or just need to get some advice. The learning styles at this school are very fluent for the students and in most classes the students have options in what to learn. It was very easy to make friends at this school and my classmate was easy to talk to either in class. Going to a high school that offers college courses was the best decision I made and this school made it easier for me to maintain both high school and college classes. Parent: We've been in the Goodrich School district for 10+ yrs. I think our schools are Amazing! Also, parents seem to be very involved with their kids education, sports & anything that comes up. My now 11th grader needed help with reading & math in first grade & they helped us get caught up by giving her extra help. Our 8 year old was completely nonverbal & neglected when he became part of our family. Their teachers & special needs faculty are fantastic! He's going into 2nd grade with confidence & self esteem. Senior: The best experiences in this school for me by far have come from the performing arts department: in band, choir, theatre, etc. Unfortunately these programs do not receive enough funding or support from the school and most productions, upkeep of facilities, events, etc. fall directly on performing arts teachers with little to no help. Scheduling generally helpful with online classes, but again scheduling with performing arts (and arts in general) classes are not given the attention needed. Some performing arts teachers are split between the middle school and the high school, and classes are not given proper attention where scheduling is concerned (especially for audition-based classes, numbers, and publicity).... Junior: Brandon school district, is honestly a decent school, I have been going here for my whole life but I do feel like there are some changes that need to be put into place. Teachers always make it feel like a safe place and most of the teachers within the school seem happy to be here. It seems like Teachers and counselors put a lot of effort into making sure students feel safe and heard. Another thing that I noticed was that there isn't many student trying to act out or student that try to cause drama and when they do students are always disciplined IN a reasonable way. A change that I noticed and think should be put into place is funding, they will always be able to find the funding for any sports but somehow there isn't any funding for things like art classes, or the robotics team.... Alum: I had attended Davison Community Schools from kindergarten at Hill Elementry through high school. I would describe Davison as a middle-class community and the schools provided a great education to prepare me for college. Most teachers were invested and encouraged their students to excel. I had many great teachers who made learning fun. Also, there was help from adult staff and peer tutors for those who needed more help. Davison has large music and sports programs and the community is proud of that as evidenced by the support they receive. Unfortunately, like many schools, Davison has its share of bullies (kids) which I experienced in middle school. Senior: Flushing Community Schools had a very good education program! They had MANY opportunities for students to thrive, and I made sure to take advantage to as many opportunities as possible. Currently, I am a part of Flushing High School's Early College Program, where you take college credits (minimum 48 credits and highest an associates degree) at Mott Community College. They chose this institution because many of the classes here can transfer, if not all, depending on where you're going after. There are many other opportunities it has given me to thrive, such as AP Classes. The teachers are great and willing to help with any question given to them. My concern is that they don't always uphold to their bullying policy, as I have been bullied a lot and they didn't help much, and they don't always help as quickly as you need. Senior: Overall, I could not have asked for a better school experience. I'm graduating at the top of my class with great experiences in theater and athletics. My school adapted to virtual learnings to work through the difficulties of the pandemic. I was able to continue to build relationships with my peers so that I have a great friendship base and was on the homecoming court by senior year. The schools lack of diversity is not the fault of the school. All people are welcome and we had a international exchange student program to which I also am still friends with some of them after they have returned to their home country. Senior: I like that Swartz Creek Community Schools offered three different learning modalities while we are experiencing a global pandemic. Which include face to face, hybrid, and online. I choose hybrid however I didn't really actually what the hybrid learning chose really was. I feel like those who chose hybrid are kind of cheated from the proper way of learning material. Alum: The Lapeer schools helped me become who I am today. I had so many amazing teachers that were patient and helped me with anything I needed. It was not he best life growing up. I had many family problems at home, and i hated going back home. But school was an escape for me. I never felt I was good enough for anything. I never went out for sports after 8th grade and never made good connections with friends. I studied so hard and focused on my school work so that I could make it out of Lapeer. I graduated with a 4.0 and number 9 in my class! I was part of the National Honors society and I was the only girl that took woods class for three years in a row! However, when the schools were combined, the district was a disaster. Passion in the teachers and students was lacking drastically and still is. Bullying is higher than ever and students are just not making it. Teachers don't care and act like the students are not worth it. There is no structure and they have cut the arts so much.... Middle School Student: What i like about Kearsley is that the teachers care. Not just your grades though, if your getting bad grades they dig deeper into your mental health and notice if your down and allow you to talk to them. The counselors are sweet and caring too and after a visit with them, they pull you out of class a couple weeks later to check up on how things are going currently. The teachers have also been very helpful with the Covid-19 and making things a little less difficult school wise. The teachers organize and plan very carefully and make sure to clean the areas after each class along with other workers (janitors) always on their feet to make a sterile environment for everyone.... Senior: The best thing about Byron is the close community. Everyone feels like family, and most people are very supportive. That being said, though, I do feel like the community as a whole needs to pitch in more to help the school. Right now, Byron doesn't have enough funding to be as technologically efficient as some of our neighboring cites do. Part of this is due to the community not pitching in to help others. Alum: My experience at Clio Schools was pretty good. I enjoyed most of my classes and teachers, there are just very few opportunities to do more than what is standard. By that, I mean there are few honors or college credit classes offered. Clio does offer two dual-enrollment opportunities, so that makes up for the lack of courses offered at the schools, but there is plenty of room for improvement. The facilities are also lacking in areas that are not of importance to the administration. For example, Clio has a notoriously terrible football team yet as of last year, there is a brand new football stadium instead of improving facilities for the Band or Robotics Programs who continue to do well at their competitions each year. Alum: Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools are literally the best schools in the Flint, Michigan area. There are extremely diverse groups of people involved in Carman-Ainsworth, that alone has molded me into a more accepting and caring person. At Carman-Ainsworth they're all about preparing their students for the future and success. As early as I can remember I was taught about college and extending my education as far as I could. Works Here: Montrose Community Schools is cutting edge for how small the school district is. There is 1:1 technology and a national award winning digital media class/club at Hill McCloy High School. Restorative practices are being used at Kuehn-Haven Middle School to help teach students about conflict resolution and positive communication strategies. The district received a large grant to develop mechatronics program. The sports program speaks for itself with former graduates participating in the National Football League as coaches or players. The arts get a boost every other year when the national Young Americans group comes to hold a workshops for our students. Several Montrose Graduates go on to be accepted into the Young Americans and tour the U.S. and Internationally. Our band program consistently earns Level 1 at band festival. Senior: It's a good school district full of teachers dedicated to their craft. All the teachers are so kind to the students and make sure that people are comfortable. As a non-binary student I really appreciate the lengths they go to to make sure they use the correct pronouns. With that being said, some of the students aren't the best to the LGBTQ community.
