Alum: I had the privilege of attending SHSD from K to 12th grade. The teachers are passionate and nurturing. There is strong parent involvement. Being a smaller district, there is an immense sense of community that I believe to not be as prevalent in neighboring districts. I am proud to say some of the friends I still have today are the same ones I met in Kindergarten. Bernards High is amazing at preparing their students for college. If you request a list of colleges the graduating seniors are attending, you will see dozens are attending Ivy League and other top-ranked universities. In my own college experience, I feel more prepared than most of my peers, and I directly attribute this to the quality of education I received at BHS. Classes at BHS are rigorous, and the students ambitious -- however, there is NOT an overly competitive, toxic environment that I hear about from friends in some surrounding districts. Parent: My daughter graduated from Montgomery High School and I think it's the best high school in the entire country. I took her out of Princeton High School because they did not even take attendance there and the students were free to aimlessly wander the halls. We actually moved to Montgomery Township solely so that my daughter could attend Montgomery High School. She was able to take advanced placement courses and received college credit for those courses. Parent: Hillsborough is a competitive school district with a variety of programs for students. They have a Gifted program, extensive special education programs, and ELL program. They also have reading, math, and writing specialist at the elementary schools along with school guidance counselors. The k-4 program is solid. The biggest problem is that the district is growing and the city keeps build two and three bedroom apartments at such a tremendously rapid pace and the schools do not have the capacity. So while class sizes are reasonable in the elementary schools. The middle and high school is overwhelmed and overcrowded. Many specials are capped at upper grades and there is not the spacing for the students. This is not the schools fault as much as a city planning/management issue. Alum: Looking back on my high school experience, I was truly honored to have the most kind and hardworking teachers. The staff at the school do their best every day to encourage students to work hard and care about the topics they are learning. All of my teachers took the time to get to know me and my interests as well as made class a fun, interesting environment despite how boorish the subject they were teaching could be. The opportunities the school has due to its size, including many varsity sports as well as clubs and volunteer positions, open up doors for students to make connections and form friendships that last a life time. I was involved with many activities and I am grateful to the staff that were able to run them as well as granting students the ability to create new clubs if none suited their interest.... Alum: They are happy as long as you're not failing. They love high achievers. Not much is done to encourage those in the middle to strive for more. Not much effort is made to challenge those students. If you are struggling, they will step in, but if you're just not working up to your potential, they don't really encourage you. Alum: The administrators, staff and teachers really display their love for the students. They go above and beyond to help us succeed. An example of this is my high school counselor, who was there for me the entire senior year with the all the time/on time guidance I needed in the college application process. It really is a great community. If anyone is moving to this area, they will find if they meet with the administrators and teachers that they are helpful and gracious to meet. They will answer questions for those that are new to the community. Open houses or new student orientation meetings are held for rising students and for new to the township families. If I wanted to change anything it would be the opportunity to meet with students in upper levels. If the last year middle school students would be able to meet students and teachers in the high school. That would be very helpful. Freshman: Currently enrolled as a freshman at Manville High School and according to my experience so far, it is a very fun and interesting experience. The classes at Manville High School demonstrate a basic level of education and the curriculum is easy to follow. Possibly adding more specific classes based on the students vote or surveys would add more diversity in topics rather than just average academics. The teachers are kind and teach life skills that could be used for the present and future. Discipline should play a large role in a school and no act of disrespect should be accepted anywhere near a safe learning environment. Furthermore, the food and some facilities should be improved to give a good image of the environment we are trying to project to the community and the rest of our country. Overall, Manville High School is a good school and with a little help and communication, we can bring new ideas and changes to the table to help build an even more excellent school environment.... Senior: I have made many friends during my time in the North Plainfield School District. I have had the opportunity to travel, join and experience many beautiful things with the different activities that the district offers. The one main change I would like to see is the emphasis on mental heath for the students. Sometimes we are overwhelmed with work, homework and activities and it takes a toll. Sophomore: The Bound Brook School District is not very bad and not very good. It's an average school, the education is good and the teachers aren't very bad though there are a few teachers that aren't easy for everyone to learn from.
