Senior: While my experience with the School District of Clayton has had its high and low points, I truly believe it has set me up for the best future possible. The teachers and administration are very receptive to the needs of their students and, for the most part, do their best to make sure the students feel as though they are being listened to. The academics are challenging, but I rarely have problems asking my teachers for help. Parent: This public school system offers superior education to all but the most elite private schools such that any kid lucky enough to live in the district has an excellent opportunity to learn, achieve and matriculate at an elite university despite not having all the benefits of upbringing or affluence. Public education is the great equalizer in society and very few district in the USA do it better than Ladue. Compared to where and when I went to public school, the instruction my kids receive is like that which was offered to the richest kids who attended the best private country day school. In terms of value, nothing beats the Ladue School District. In areas where public school systems are plagued with poor performance, this kind of education would cost you 30K or more per year per student at a very competitive private school. Junior: Throughout the years, have enjoyed Rockwoods leadership and their engagement in their community. It feels like the district makes an effort to provide a nurturing environment for their students to achieve the greatest they can academically and prepares them for their life outside of school. I feel as though they make efforts to promote diversity, such as holding clinics and assemblies and getting input from their students regularly. Junior: Parkway, at least Parkway West High School, has great and caring teachers who are genuinely passionate to see students succeed. Many of these teachers are relatively more accredited than teachers of other districts. However, I wish the district spent more money on maintaining the building, making sure there isn’t mold in the classrooms. Additionally, while there is a wide amount of AP selections already available to students, the schedules were more open to change. I had to sign up for many online classes because while they were available through the school, they just did not fit into my schedule. Thus, maybe the district should try offering multiple courses and hire more teachers to teach those courses, instead of allocation money to renovate, architecturally speaking, a building that already has a great structure. Junior: BSSD has an incredible amount of access for students. Students have a plethora of activities open to them. The opportunities are nearly limitless. However, the administration has failed teachers and students for years. Central office fails to adapt to change requested by parents, teachers, and students. Despite this, schools still provide top notch education and care to all students. BSSD staff works hard to create a safe learning environment that students often thrive in. If your student is a hard worker, BSSD is the district for them. Don't expect much from the higher-ups however if you have an issue. It can be quite political in a district as large as BSSD.... Alum: I've been in the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District my whole life, starting at the ECC and graduating from the high school in 2020. I'm forever indebted to this school for being such an incredible environment to grow and learn in. The teachers of this district are some of the most passionate and hard-working mentors I've ever met. Thanks to their tireless work, my personal interests were nurtured and I'm now continuing to study them in college. So many small moments in this district changed my life; meeting life long friends, going camping for the first time with Adventure Club (and loving it), learning to love athletics through cross country and track, getting to use power tools with the theater program, etc. The list goes on. Hearing about the environment of larger schools in the area has made me so grateful for having such a small and loving community to grow within. Senior: The diversity here is awful. There are basically no BIPOC teachers at all, and this is a large school! The student body diversity is also very lacking, and while people are not often open racist (etc.), you definitely feel like something is lacking. Food is terrific these days as the food staff truly stepped it up; we have free lunches for everyone, and they are fantastic! There are many options, like soups, salads, pizza, tacos, sandwiches, burgers, sweet/regular potatoes, fruit, and more. They give large servings and don't really mind if you need a second if you're an athlete and need to eat a bunch (cough my friends). As for academics, you have to take honors or AP classes (there is no more IB) if you want to even be in a good learning environment; the regular classes are loud and hard to event teach from what I hear. Sophomore: Park Hill is an amazing school district, with a great community, and learning styles for all kids. They are constantly expanding and changing, because they listen to kid and parent opinions, and make sure everyone's voice is heard. Their new system of learning for high schoolers Is one of the best programs I have been in, LEAD is A great alternative to modern-day schooling, with it being mostly online, and projects, with little to no homework, and PFA's, short 10 question tests that substitute for big midterms, and finals. The elementary schools are a great place to be. The teachers and most students are kind and very caring. Park hill also has Pre-K, before and after school clubs, and activities. I can't stress enough how welcoming and caring everyone is. Making friends is easy with sports, and summer school. If you have to choose somewhere to go to school in KC, Parkhill is the place.... Senior: I loved going to school in the Wentzville School District. The teachers are all very welcoming, and are there to assist you in so many ways possible. I have made very strong connections with most of my teachers while being a student in the Wentzville School District and believe that any upcoming students will have the same experience! The sports are very competitive and I loved that about this district. Teams were always very well put together, and based upon skill and grades/ how well students were doing in school. Junior: My experience in the North Kansas City school district was very interesting. When I first started my freshman year, everything was weird. Masks were forced to be worn, chairs were six feet apart, and I only interacted with my teachers once a week. Despite this, my school went out of their way to make everyone feel as though this was par for the course at Staley. They turned freshman first day into a party while still following the rules and guidelines to prevent the spread of covid. And when sophomore year rolled around, they were more than ready to give us the experiences we missed out on because of the virus. And junior year was even more amazing, because that's when Staley was officially back. Masks were off, social distancing was a thing of the past, and the school was ready to push forward in our academic and athletics. Senior: There are many things I love about Columbia Public Schools, such as the block schedule, how caring the teachers are, and the tutoring that's provided. However, there are a few things I'd like to see change. I would eliminate the contracting for honors in studies classes because the students earn the honors credit without actually doing the work. And lastly, I'd change is how they don't let us students use graphing calculators on math tests when they put them on the syllabus as something we need. If I'm going to spend $110 on a calculator, I'd like to be able to use it. Overall I loved going to school through CPS, elementary and high school were my favorite but I loved it all. Junior: School of the Osage is a very good school with plenty of opportunities for any activity. Teachers take the time to make sure students understand and offer tutoring or extra help. The district goes to school Tuesday through Friday which is nice but I feel that sometimes teachers are rushed to get through curriculum. I know many parents and some students who feel the same way. Maybe this is something that the district will better adapt to with time, but it is something to be mindful for because it puts immense pressure on students and teachers to get through the curriculum. Senior: I would like to see different options for foreign languages. As it is now, the only choice for foreign languages is Spanish. I know that Spanish is a common foreign language, but it's not the only foreign language that is spoken throughout the world. How about some more choices? On a different note, I am pleased that the district is willing to work with the different special needs of my children. 3 out of 4 of my children have an individual education plan. We have taken advantage of some of the programs that they offer. It would be nice if they offered some social skills programs for withdrawn students.
