Baltimore School for the Arts
#52 Best Public High Schools in Maryland
Junior: I can only speak to the experiences of a visual artist. The schedules are well thought out, centered around the students' interests, and we constantly have access to our studios and materials. The classes are somewhat rigorous, but nothing more than college-prepatory. Our teachers are constantly involved, and there is a healthy balance between emphasis on technical skill and creativity. Academics-wise, the school falters a bit. It feels like the curriculum is constantly in a struggle between trying to be college level and trying to step aside for the arts classes. The classrooms seem wholly underfunded, unorganized, and generally unkept. But, what BSA's academics lack in facility, they more than make up for it through the teachers and the range of classes available. There is generally good communication, a wide range of opportunities, free SATs, and a constant stream of help through mental support, academic support, and artistic support.
