Freshman: I moved to Pittsburgh from Virginia about two months into the school year. I started at Fox Chapel, and I was amazed at this new school. I loved all of the clubs and art classes that this school offered. This was an amazing experience being able to be a part of so many new things. The only bad thing was trying to keep up with school work while moving into a new place. Middle School Student: Hartwood is an amazing school. The teachers are so caring and helpful. I love how we are able to play orchestra or band instruments in elementary. I have made many friends at this school. The homework is very easy if you pay attention in class. Parent: Kerr has excellent teachers and diverse students. There are daily "special classes" including Art, Computers, PE, Music, Spanish, and Library. In 2019-2020 Kerr will have a state-of-the-art new building with a Maker Lab and collaborative spaces. They will also have a Spanish-immersion magnet open to kids throughout the district. Senior: It was overall a good experience. I received good education, and many people I met were very friendly. There are some downsides though. It may sound silly, but Hampton is very bad at regulating temperature in their schools. It will be 10 degrees outside, and it will feel like 50 inside. I am not alone on this, everyone else is shivering around me as well. I have Raynaud's, meaning my fingers and toes go numb easily in cold. My fingers often turn white in school. Unless it is 70 or above outside, it is unbearably cold inside the building. It makes it impossible to concentrate on class since my body naturally prioritizes my health. Parent: North Hills Middle School has an excellent gifted program. It far exceeds all the other public school programs in Allegheny County. Their program is tailored to meet the diverse interests of each gifted child. Students are surveyed regarding learning styles and interest levels. Once all the student's information is gathered, the gifted teachers then diligently produce highly rated programs, activities, and competitions for all. All of my children have gone through the North Hills Gifted Program. Each one has flourished into a high-achieving intrinsically motivated successful professional. Senior: The teachers are most likely the best part of the school. I have consistently emailed my teachers if I ever need help, and they would do everything they could to help. Sometimes they would offer service after school as well. Compared to other schools, it is one of the best. Even though it is one of the best, there are bad parts about it. Not the schools themselves but some of the students. A handful of students are always messing around in the bathrooms, doing things they are not supposed to. Middle School Student: I have been a student at ECS from K-8. I cannot stress enough the how amazing and beneficial the staff have been. Every. Single. Teacher. I’ve had has been radically committed to the mission of this school (except one but dont worry). Daily I see teachers speaking on the same level as students and genuinely listening to their needs. The motto “we grow citizens” is exactly what is happening in this environment. Not only is the school devoted to cultivating learning that is beneficial for the future for students, teaching empathy and compassion, they also have lots of cool plants around each campus :). One of my most recent math teachers was one of the most influential people I have encountered in my 14 year life. He taught me so much about how to be compassionate, devoted, and vulnerable. Not only that, he taught about the deepest workings of math and encouraged students to ask questions and explore. ECS is filled with incredible teachers like this.
