Senior: I learned so much during my time at OHS. The faculty and staff and administration were very supportive and they all strived to make our educational experience fun, memorable, but also challenging. There were difficult times during our high school years and our district was always very supportive of the students well being and mental health. I consider myself fortunate to have attended Okemos Public Schools and I have an excellent educational base because of it! The best part was definitely the teachers. Some cared more than others and they really made up for any shortcoming of the others. The worst part of my experience was that at times I found it difficult to balance my academic requirements with my social life. Senior: I have a great group of friends and we are all very supportive of each other. We are all dedicated students, participate on athletics and are in student government and social justice clubs. I have had a good experience at ELHS, the worst part has been the social experiences. All of my negative experiences were caused by students (mean girls). I've enjoyed learning at ELHS. Some of the best parts were doing dual enrollment at our local community college, participating in art exhibits showcasing my work and the friendships I have established now. Freshman: Lansing Community College is a great school for students who don't know what they want to do, or for students who want to save money! The classes are intimate like a high school classroom. Many universities have hundreds of students in their classrooms, so it can be harder to have that one-on-one time with the professors! Senior: To me, DeWitt is an accepting school of all types of people and has been an absolute pleasure to be at. I love the classes and how many teachers are approachable and friendly. Sports and competitions in general are a big part of the DeWitt culture, as we have a high-performing Varsity, Women's Varsity, and JV group for just about every sport we offer. I can personally attest to this as I've been on our Archery team, bowling team, and Marching band for the extent of high school and I believe that they're a very good insight into who DeWitt is as a school. Having said all that though, sports are really the only thing that drives people together, and there's not a very big selection of clubs to join, which is something I wish to see happen in the future.... Senior: Overall my experience was ok. I'm one just over one semester away from graduation. Most of my teachers have been ok, a few have been not the best, and a few have been amazing. My classmates are a mix. Some care, some don't. Some cause problems and others are just trying to make it through. I'd like to see a bigger sense of community. I'd like to see that people care about each other. I'd like there to be less politics in decision making and more decision making based on what's best for the students, staff and community. I'd like there to be zero tolerance for violence and bullying. Sure it's in the handbook, but it doesn't really happen. Students need to feel safe. Junior: Great faculty and teachers, overall a very vibrant community of people. The schools work together to give students a well rounded curriculum from k-12. Diversity and progressiveness is fairly low, but that is to be expected of a rural town like Mason. Great athletics program, however the academic extracurriculars are lacking in budgeting and opportunities. There is a robotics team, youth in government, and a GSA at Mason High School. Parent: Post Oak's teachers, facilities, and teachers are awesome. The new renovations to the building provide an excellent learning environment. The outdoor spaces complement the building and provide a multitude of opportunities for students and neighborhood residents as well. The teachers and administrators work incredibly hard to build community as well as an affirming environment for students. The Lansing School District is one of the most diverse in Michigan and Post Oak's International Baccalaureate/Chinese Immersion program focuses on celebrating diversity as well as prioritizing inquiry/critical thinking, developing a global mindset, and embodying IB's Learner Profile. The school provides academic clubs and is trying to add more athletic opportunities. I would like to see the district commit to developing a stronger youth sports program as well as strengthen art/music programming. I highly recommend Post Oak to all families.... Read 1 review
