Parent: Dekalb School of the Arts is an excellent school. The faculty are wonderful and the students are talented and nice. The review below that claims there are "rodents scurrying across the floors" is a tremendous exaggeration from 3 and a half years ago, when they found one deceased squirrel in a storeroom. All of the maintenance issues have been resolved since the county got in trouble for maintaining all of its schools! Alum: I went to Chamblee for all 4 years of high school and overall it was a good experience. Chamblee is a very diverse school and has many different sports and clubs for students to get involved in. Chamblee is a very competitive school academically and it can be very overwhelming at times (don't overload yourself with APs just because all your friends are taking them). There is an overall lack of communication between administration, teachers, and students which caused a lot of frustration and there is a lack of college readiness and support from counselors. There is also a separation of magnet and resident kids which was hard when being a resident kid. I often felt my needs were brushed aside for magnet kids. Overall though, I had a good 4 years. I made lots of friends and had a lot of fun. Remember! Parent: We just LOVE this school! Growing up going to a very high end private school I never thought we could get more out of charter school but ICSA is the best of the best! The staff and teachers here truly care about the students and the education they provide is second to none! Our daughter was ahead of the curve at her last school in California so we were looking for a language school to enhance her educational portfolio and keep her engaged in school, well ICSA did just that! Being new to the area the families at ICSA have been a very welcoming addition to our new surroundings. I can not speak highly enough of the school- their well rounded approach to education and raising whole children, the staff - great communication, engaging teaching styles, and the families that make this place a stellar community to be part of!... Junior: I love Atlanta Classical Academy! The teachers are amazing and the school really prepares you for college. However, If you decide to send your child to this school, make sure they TRULY understand how to study. The downfall of many new students at ACA is that when they enter the school (freshman year for ex.) they tend to expect that the grading system and the rigour of work will be the same as their previous school. I would say in order to do well at ACA you must study hard because the curriculum can be intense at times. One critique I would give the school is that the staff is not diverse. As a POC at ACA, having teachers who look like you and can relate to racial problems that may occur at school is very important. Freshman: Dekalb Early College Academy is a wonderful school, not just with academics. DECA provides a wonderful set of admins and teachers who truly care about their students and want the best for them. The students are all fairly behaved and are courteous to other people and things around them. I enjoy seeing the staff and students each day as we all encourage each other to achieve one main goal point. The amount of healthy competition is beautiful and pushes me so hard as a student! Parent: We switched from our zoned school to FAST when it originally opened 6 years ago. The main reason we were interested is because they look at the whole student. You can be on level or behind in one subject and not be penalized and kept out of higher level work in another one. They started doing social-emotional learning long before it was the “it” thing to do. And design thinking prepares you for the real world. The real world isn’t a bunch of standardize tests. Senior: PDS is one of the greatest schools i’ve ever been in. The building is beautiful and modern and the facilities are clean. Besides appearance, PDS also has so much technology and tools for students to learn how to use. I’m on the engineering pathway, which means I spend a lot of time in the Paul Duke Makerspace, and get to operate all kinds of wood and metal working machinery. We also get to utilize Auto CAD design software, coding software, graphic design ware, etc in the many classes PDS has to offer. Presently, the engineering department is working on an outdoor garden space with mushroom beds and a greenhouse, which will be a cool space for future students to explore botanical or horticultural interests. The school is also working on setting up a 3D printing lab, because while there are a variety of 3D printers in the school, they aren’t in one central place for student use. Parent: Chamblee Middle School is a diverse but balanced and inclusive community. The school building was built less than 15-years ago, so the facilities and classrooms are among the best in the county. The school is unique, in that it serves both the magnet program for high achievers and the local middle school attendance zone. This unique program adds greatly to the diversity and the academic focus of it's student body. Administrators are extremely responsive and take great pride in being associated with one of the flagship programs in the county school system. Parents actively support the school and participation is encouraged by the school administration. High-quality teachers are drawn to the school because of the high achieving student body and teacher retention is very high. Works Here: My experience with Asher Ashford Park Elementary school has been a great one to say the very least. Since coming on board at the beginning of 2019, the staff and faculty have consistently extended themselves to the students, fellow employees and parents. Niche User: Me & my brother go to this school, i am in 3rd he is in 1st. Globe is really good! There is events, a just perfect schedule and a awesome community! While we was in corona the school acted quick, we all went virtual for i think 4-5 months and the starting of April we went 5 tables 2 at each! At the middle of May we went 5 tables 4 at each (some tables had 3). Also they will always be there to help! They make learning fun. They always take CREST seriously. Parent: Overall we've been very happy at TMS. We're in our 6th year, and we've had some ups and downs over the years. One thing that has been consistent are our wonderful teachers. I cannot say enough good things about the faculty and administration. The academics and curriculum have been a great fit for my children. The hands on, project base learning is wonderful. In addition to that, the frequent expeditions are fantastic and fun. Now onto the bad. Bullying and overall school culture needs improvement. We've had issues in that department, and unfortunately, the bad kids get away with their bad behavior. The school's social scene is a little icy, and not very welcoming. this is especially true for the upper grades. I can't place the blame on the school for this problem, but it does reflect back to the local community. Avondale/ Decatur definitely have an elitist vibe that overflows into the school.... Parent: My children have attended this school since opening. They also attend other learning and social clubs outside of school. Over the years I noticed how my children have strong project based learning skills over their peers that attend other private and public schools. They also have exhibited a diverse way of applying what they have learned in math, science and language arts. From my experience of both private and public schools my children have attended, the turn over is about the same. Any issues I have had with teachers at BIA have been resolved fairly quickly. Another factor in our family success at BIA has been our participation with the school and staff but also educational reinforcement at home. We do not believe that ANY school can teach our children EVERYTHING. Also, every family is different. We discussed what type of education, teachers and curriculum was important. Senior: Arabia Mountain High School is one of the top high schools in Georgia. In fact, it is the only Theme high school in Dekalb County. I appreciate the process of acceptance into the program of study, the academic requirements, and the reinforcement to uphold the standard of a great secondary school. When I applied to attend Arabia, I was given the option to select the pathway of academics. I chose music, however, I had a second and third alternative. The lottery process helped. Once I became an active student, the school made it clear that I was to maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Thankfully, I was able to exceed the requirement with the help of tutorial programs and academic support in school. I would like to add the little to no tolerance for behavior problems at the school. This makes it easier to learn. My only concern is all teachers are not as friendly as most. I love Arabia Mountain and I would recommend the school to anyone who wants to succeed!... Senior: I started going to Tapestry my Freshman year of high school, now I’m a Senior about to graduate. Overall I would say I had a good experience at Tapestry. Everyone was kind and respectful to one another. The classes were smaller than a regular high school so the teachers gave the students more attention and time to finish their work. It is however not similar to a “normal” high school. Our school population does not exceed 2,000. We go to school in a one floor building and we don’t have a football team or many fun activities. Parent: Our son has attended VME since it opened (he started there in the 2nd grade he's now in 5th) several years ago and we love it. We have had a great experience there. The faculty and administration are caring and professional. Additionally, there is a somewhat small but very active contingency of parents that are very active and engaged at the school (PTA, Dad's Club, classroom volunteers, etc.). While the school is a Title 1 school and very ethnically and racially diverse, we believe that it has actually been to the benefit (not determent) of our son. Parent: I appreciate and admire the care that is put into Dekalb Elementary School of the Arts (DESA). The building remains impeccably clean and the staff members are very kind to my daughter and me. So far the experience has given me rest assured in knowing that each child is being cultivated in an environment that stimulates left and right brain development. In just three weeks into the school year, I have personally witnessed through my daughter how DESA is able to carry out an objective of analytical development while nurturing those who yearn to be liberated in the fullness of their creative journey. The joy my baby is experiencing so far makes me happy. 😍 My daughter and I look forward to an amazing year and a healthy exchange of everyone giving their very best.
