Senior: In terms of academics and teachers, this school is great. It is a difficult school with many projects and focus on teamwork, but it definitely prepares you for college. Having college classes along high school classes allows us to get an idea of what university will be like. I wish there was more diversity in my grade, but underclassmen seem to be more diverse. Parent: Having been at the school since its inception and assisting in many ways from start-up fundraising, marketing, assisting in the classroom and coaching, I can tell you that the Scholars’ Academy is a gifted school like no other. With my three children attending (one having had AWEFUL experiences in public school before being identified as twice gifted), they were able to freely explore their intellectual abilities and create solid lifelong friendships. All organizations have growing pains and our school may not be perfect for your student… that is an opportunity for the parent to find the right place where their student flourishes! Junior: Highland School of Technology is a great STEM school, with pathway-specific courses. For instance, those who apply and are accepted into the Dental pathway will take several specialized dental courses throughout their time at Highland. The teachers are always ready to give extra time to help students understand a tough subject, and the students are intelligent and driven. There are many clubs, sports, and other extracurriculars that students can participate in outside of the classroom, and students are given a voice. Alum: I spent eight years at LNC and made great friends and even greater memories. The sporting events are always fun to attend, especially with the Knightmare student section. The majority of teachers are amazing and you have many opportunities to take AP and Dual Enrollment courses. They also have a great lunch program where you can order from places like Chik-Fil-A and Panda Express. Alum: I've been at this school since it first opened in 2010, making myself and the other graduates of 2023 The Founding Class. There are so many great things about MICS such as they are a K-12 program giving you the opportunity to grow within their walls. They offer many programs that enhance our learning experiences not just in the classrooms but outside as well such as enrichment field trips, online courses, and so much more! They even offer a week-long senior trip every year. MICS also gave me opportunities with my Aspergers, by giving me the tools that I needed to be successful. Which included helping me expand the fashion program. A few things that I would like to see change is how the school counselors talk to the students. They aren't very approachable and cut you off very quickly. They seem to just want to counsel students in regard to life after high school, not life in high school. Senior: From a young age I was always in public schools, up until the 10th grade I was enrolled into Piedmont. It’s the best school I’ve been to so far! There are no fights, and everyone is friendly. I’ve been doing great in my classes ever since. If I do have a problem I tell a teacher I don’t keep it to myself anymore because I can trust the faculty and staff at this school. One thing I always look forward to is my second period teacher she’s basically like my school mom. She’s always there for me and she listens to me and helps me when I have a problem. I used to hate school but now I look forward to going every day. The teachers at Piedmont make sure we meet our goals and ask us if there’s anyway they can help if they can’t. It is a part of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and is found listed under the Magnet Program options. Williams is a located outside of downtown Charlotte on a unique multi building campus. The school takes advantage of its location by participating in many community service events within the Charlotte area. By design, Williams is a grade 7-12 school with a smaller than average student body. Parent: We have loved how Lab personalizes our children’s education. They tailor the subject matter to each child’s particular needs. We love the emphasis (with an entire curriculum) on social emotional development (how to recognize and avoid stereotypes, how to productively work through conflict (the difference in being assertive vs aggressive) etc. It is pretty amazing. Lab uses the Columbia teachers workshop model which involves having teachers teach a mini (short) lesson then kids work independently or in small leveled groups. They don’t sit in hr long lectures. We have loved the partial language immersion and the interdisciplinary course work starting in K. We have a 1st & 3rd grader at Lab and they both love it. Parent: We just finished our daughter's kindergarten year. For the 1st half of the year we had few complaints. All teachers were receptive to parental questions and issues. Even at the kindergarten level work by the student was expected. After Covid hit, the school really came through. Within days multiple online classes were setup. As time went on, through feedback and analysis these classes improved greatly. Five distinct, live classes were available daily. It worked out well. Senior: I’ve gone to Jackson day all my life. The only other school I was ever in was a different preschool. I went to their preschool and now I’m about to graduate.I’ve seen the school grow through the years and I think I might be the most qualified to review them honestly. The only reason I’ve stayed is probably for my friends and for the amount of time I’ve already spent here. Their communication is terrible, most of the time there’s little to no communication between school and students, even teachers.They’re disorganized to a degree where each year I seriously question staying. Some teachers they’ve hired have been seriously questionable, some have been a positive experience I will remember forever. The owners/ founders I can only describe as borderline incompetent . For as long as I’ve known them they’ve always struggled running the school smoothly. When they founded it they had no prior experience and it shows.
