Junior: If you want to get ahead of the college crowd, Benjamin Franklin High School should be on your list. With rigorous courses and a plethora of AP courses to choose from, this school has got you covered. However, the prevailing mood from both students and teachers is usually depressive as a result, although teachers try their hardest to make classes engaging and fun. Since the school is public, you get all sorts of characters and backgrounds in one place, meaning you are certain to find a friend (the Franklin Summer Institute is a good way to start the school year off with friends!). On the flip side, it's not uncommon to not encounter half of the staff/student population until your junior year, so if a close-knit community is a must for you, avoid Ben Franklin at all costs. Alum: I really liked going here! I attended this school from second grade until I graduated high school, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I love the friends I made, and the school spirit. The only issues I would say are: the deans and administration are not on your side and want to punish people. Detentions are handed out left and right, dress code is beyond strict, and seniors do not get any privileges. Despite all of this, finding a good of people at this school will get you through the day, and you will love Willow. Parent: I love the opportunity for my grandchildren to learn a different language. ISL is a top 10 language immersion school, kindergarten through 8th grade, average size classrooms with 2 teachers each. Along with the core subjects, Art, Circus Arts, Music, and PE are included. They have a good after care program. In the morning there is carpool dropoff, but no carpool pickup in the afternoons, so I would like that to change. Bus service can be provided depending on your location. There are several campuses that teach Spanish, French, and other languages, teachers are from various countries. It's an amazing school! Kindergarten students are not required to know the target language upon enrollment, 2d grade students must have knowledge of the target language to be accepted into ISL. Senior: New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) is a wonderful place for students from all over the New Orleans area to come and express themselves via their prefered art form. I chose Theatre Design, and I truly believe and can say with 100% certainty that I would not have gotten the training I did if I would have gone to any other school in my area. I am dedicated to this school because I live over an hour away and I still choose every morning to get up at 5:30 to come to school, knowing I could easily just go to a different school. NOCCA has given all students a place to feel safe and challenge themselves in not only their arts, but as people in general. Parent: Everything about our experience was wonderful. The teachers are exceptional. They genuinely care about their students’ education and over all well being. The administration and support staff was very helpful and quick to respond. The parent/teacher communication is easy via the app and weekly newsletter. We had very good experience with speech therapy. The outdoor facilities are nice-good play area and good resources for exercise and play for recess and PE. They did a fantastic job handling covid issues. I love the proximity to Walnut St. playground for after school. The building is beautiful and safe. The PTO is active and does a good job of organizing events to involve parents and show appreciation for the teachers. It is a very good community and my kids are off to a great start to a life in which they ENJOY learning. I had a kindy and a 1st grader this year. Senior: I did have a good time at the school and met great people there. You can make friends at the school. You can even make friends with the teachers. The teachers care about their jobs. They want to help be successful in college, if you want to go to college. They show you different options you can choose after you graduate from the school. Parent: This is a great school for creative kids. It is truly diverse, with kids from families headed by doctors studying next to kids suffering from developmental disabilities, and the ethic at the school is one of kids helping each other and contributing their own unique strengths. Junior: New Harmony is like no other high school in New Orleans. In our little community, everyone knows each other and support each other. Every student is being prepared for real world life and situations, and as a school we don't focus on an education which we are programmed to pass exams, we focus on our own interests and finding little pieces of ourselves.
