Parent: Our child has been at Larchmont since kinder and has thrived. He went to the elementary Fairfax campus, a smaller campus with spacious classrooms, and he has loved the bigger Selma campus too. The leadership works hard to create an accessible and friendly atmosphere for the students and parents so there is a strong sense of community. The admin is collaborative and value parent input. The teachers are nurturing and attentive and know when to give students more help or more of a challenge. There are many enrichment classes (art, music, gardening, sports teams, band), a social-emotional curriculum and clubs. Most kids eat the (optional) lunch prepared in the Fairfax kitchen and is SO good. At Selma, our child has delved deeper into academics and developed new interests like government and digital media in clubs. Junior: What I enjoy most is the fact that no boundaries are put between subjects or students. All students can explore the same subject and yet still learn something. They have done an excellent job at involving the arts in our academics, and it has made me understand certain topics more than I used to. What I would change would primarily be how we are prepared for college. Our kids love the school, the teachers, their friends, the programs, the sports activities and everything the school offers. Freshman: My experience at King Drew Medical High School has been very good. Even though my first 9th grade year has been on zoom, there good parts about this school that I love. The teachers love the engage with you and do care about how you may be feeling. When you need help, the school lets teachers host office hours. Office hours are teachers giving a separate class after school for any students that need clarification on something or are confused about the lesson that was taught to them. It is very diverse and you get to see many students of different colors and backgrounds. King Drew offers many opportunities . For example, this schools has a Heath Care which gives the students an opportunity to go to MLK Hospital and observe the professionals in person and do fun labs. I do recommend this school for students who would like to be in the doctor field in the future and for students that just wants a positive, hard-working, fun school that has teachers that pushes you to your limit!... Alum: ILA is the perfect solution for students who have busy schedules of who learn better virtually! Though it’s an online school, there is a campus where all the teachers and instructors are available all school day for you to visit to ask questions or learn a lesson live. The online program they administer is easy to use and educational, and the pacing is up to you as long as you complete all your classes by the end of the semester. Freshman: Something that I love about Math & Science College Preparatory is how involved they are with all their students and the effort that they put into actually making everyone feel apart of the school itself, inclusive to kids from freshman year to senior year. Although it was shown before when I was in the 8th grade since they had a fair event at the high school and much more, even before actually entering incoming freshman we’re allowed to come to shark week which was a three day even with each day learning about a new pathway that we could study. Those being engineering, biomedical, and computer science, all being apart of a STEM wanting field.In those three days of going I was able to explore the campus before attending and growing used to it so when the first day came I sorta had an idea where all my classes were located at. Junior: Middle College High School provides a safe environment, allowing students to cater to their own specific career paths, while simultaneously knocking out A-G requirements necessary for graduation. Speaking of career path, students must fill out, and update a thing called "career paths," in which grade administered counselors must carefully consider and acknowledge. One by one, the counselors help each and every student carve a way to their desired career by recommending them courses to take. Important to note, MCHS is a dual enrollment school. Students are expected to take college courses (renewing each season) to either gain college credits, or accelerate A-G requirements, allowing students to graduate early or acquire an AA in high school. Apart from that, MCHS is a small school, which allows students the advantage of personal connection to staff and 1/1 time with teachers to make sure all needs are being met. Parent: I think the school is the closest you can get to a private school while being a free public charter middle school. The school’s use of the Merit/Demerit system, use of dress code, a large support staff, and strict adherence to rules and appropriate consequences when children don’t, makes it an extremely safe and enables the children to focus on studies. Their novel approach to instruction accommodates children who may struggles but also challenges those who are more advanced using a tiered structure with 4-5 levels per grade. The levels teach the same material but have more in-class assistance and move at varying paces. I really like the After School Program (ASP), since it’s not just a child-care service. It offers multiple clubs such as cooking, robotics, sports, and others. Their sports teams include soccer, flag football, and basketball with teams traveling locally by bus to compete. Alum: This school is amazing, and so was my expirience as a student there. There are many factors that make this school exceptional. Such as the teachers, lessons, students, and field trips. The teachers had a huge impact in my expirence. They were so motivated and cheerful that is was contagious. The lessons they taught were so engaging and creative. The students there hold such great personalities, that they make you want to go to school. But what really makes this middle school amazing are the field trips. At the end of each year, the top 30 highest acheiveing student are awarded to go to places such as San Francisco, and National Yellowstone, and Washington DC for a whole entire week. Junior: Being a Junior at Alliance Collins Family College Ready Highschool has been really good, the the whole staff is always there to help you succeed. Since the pandemic did take a toll on plenty of students in my school, Collins has provided us with the support we need in order to feel comfortable and safe. By creating a safe environment, and to have a support system to rely on, it really helps us as students know that we can depend on the school to help us with any issue we need. From the end of 2019 to now, there has been big changes to the school, us as students are now able to input our opinion on more things, as to how we feel about schedules, or how we feel about how the school is managing overall. Senior: Discovery Preparatory School is a comfortable, small sized school consisting of wonderful students and teachers. Considering how small it is, it grants each student the greater opportunity to receive complete assistance with their issues, and appointments with the counselor, as well as to receive critical information about colleges/universities. Senior: My experience at this school was amazing. There is much support and help for students. The school focuses on academics and mental health. They are strongly encouraged to seek out help and have conversations with peers to figure out their troubles. It is an amazing school that is perfect for those in the community. The classes are extremely helpful for students who are very much needed in college. They even offer college courses for students who have an interest in the dual enrollment program. I did college courses my senior year and now I have credits for college! The staff here go beyond their call of duty for their dedication to the student at Animo Pat Brown. They treat everyone equally with no bias for any grading, choosing, etc. The school is small which means students can have a better and personal connections with not only the teachers but their peers as well. Senior: Cals is a small school so I didn't experience the high school experience of having field trips, rallies, a senior trip, and more. It is a charter school so they aren't directly funded by the government which is affected me because we don't receive the right resources for us. Also, students are way too babied when Cals is supposed to be a "College Prep" by the teachers mostly with this upcoming generation who just rebel because they think it's "cool". However, I enjoyed that there is more interaction with the teachers during class and how I was able to take several college classes at school for free. I would've preferred for there to be more clubs because it helps for applications and resumes. Alum: Hello I was a student at Alliance MIT. I recently just graduated as a Senior from the first founding class of Alliance MIT. Since we were the first set of students to establish school life and culture, we were only able to do so much. We now leave Alliance with a legacy of decent state test scores and drinking boba from our neighborhood donut shop. Alliance has so much potential since the building is brand new.
