Senior: West High School is one of the most diverse high schools in country and its real mix of lower and higher income students, which is an excellence environment for learning from others who do not have your same experiences. The teachers are kind and always care not only about your academic performance but also your well-being. The school has its issues with low budgets and a building that's a mishmash of new and old construction, meaning that maintenance and repairs are a constant. Alum: I liked how academically motivated this school is. I felt very prepared going into high school. It is one of the most diverse schools in Alaska, and you get to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds. It is fairly strict, meaning you cant chew gum, no phones, no flip flops...but it helps you get good studying habits without distractions. The teachers (especially the middle school teachers) are willing to help people who need extra help as well. Junior: I have enjoyed my experience at Dimond high school. I am currently a Junior in the Alaska middle college program so I no longer attend Dimond, but I did enjoy how welcoming everyone is there. The staff works really hard to make sure that their students are doing well in their classes and they try hard to build relationships as well. I have connected with so many staff members and I am glad that I was able to build a relationship with them over the years. Middle School Student: I go here, it is okay. There were lots of school fights last year and potential violence. Alum: I loved this school so much during my time there. I began there in 7th grade, and continued until senior year. The school gave me opportunities to use my voice, like hosting school-wide meetings to address an issue. I had the freedom to choose my classes (I still had to take my core credits) and I could have the option to adjust them to fit my needs. Everyone knows each other because of its small size, and that leads to a great support system within peer groups; sometimes, going to school with the same few kids can be hard, but it taught me how to adapt and work through relationships I viewed as important. Students and staff are extremely accepting students and their individuality, which helped me become more comfortable with myself during some of the most awkward years of my life. Steller isn’t for everybody, but those who use the school to its full potential can come out a stronger, independent person who can voice their opinions appropriately and with ease.... Junior: I have been going to Polaris K-12 School since I was in seventh grade and I fell in love with it! I love going to a school where kids ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade walk the hallways. As a person who wants to work with kids as an adult, this is the perfect environment for me. All of the teachers are very understanding and push the students to do their best in everything they do. The students also have a huge voice when it comes down to what has happened around the school. I love the block schedule and the opportunity to take college classes at the school. The only problem with this school is the drama that goes around among the students. There are many students that were very dramatic in middle school and that brought a lot of conflict throughout the grade. High school, however, is drama free. I also wish that the drama department had a theater so that all of the concerts would not have to be preformed in the gym. That is the only problem with smaller schools.... Read 54 reviews

Parent: I currently have a 7th grader and two 3rd graders at Rilke. We have been there for over 7 years now and could not recommend the school enough. The staff and teachers care about the students. They want them to be successful, not only as a student but as a person. The class sizes are smaller and allow for more one on one attention, they have before and after school clubs if needed for work, and they have a great dress code. Niche User: My experience at Chugach Optional Elementary School was amazing. Although I was only there for two years, it was fantastic. The teaching style is much more casual than other schools. Chugach Optional is also more arts based rather than math and science based which made it much easier to learn. The one thing that it could work on is diversity. Since it is very parent-involvement based, it is hard for poorer people to get in and be involved which is the main problem. Diversity at Chugach is very limited, with the vast majority being of Caucasian descent. Parent: Romig Middle School is a great school with a great student body and support from the community. Like all middle schools in Anchorage, however, it suffers from over emphasis on a bunch of rigid rules, some of which have virtually no point to them other than to teach kids that there are rules and that because there are rules the rules must be obeyed. the different programs at Romig are terrific: gifted, highly gifted, Russian Immersion, pre I/B (I think) alaska Native?, neighborhood. and great sports.... Senior: East is a super diverse school and a supportive community! East has offers challenging courses for students to exceed and has several programms and activities to participate and become a part of. East high school provides students with several oppurtunities to exceed and become successful. One thing I would improve upon at East is college awarness, I personally feel like we should be more informed about college and scholarships earlier in our highschool career, perhaps during sophomore year. I believe this because I feel like being exposed earlier to all of this information would allow us to better prepare and plan rather than being exposed to it all very suddenly and quickly during a junior year which for many of us can be the hardest and busiest year of highschool. Senior: The variety of programs offered at King Tech High School are amazing! They range from welding to cosmetology. My time there was worth it, albeit a few struggles here and there. The instructors and counselors were very helpful in getting me situated when I first arrived. If you need help getting a job or preparing for post-secondary schools, everyone is more than willing to help. Freshly made lunches are sold every Wednesday-Thursday by virtue of the culinary program. Full-time students will get to experience what online schooling is like seeing as that is how the school provides the academic credits to them. Leaving it on that note I will have to say that King Tech isn't for students who lack self motivation. You can easily fall behind if you don't regularly check in on your assignments. One thing I would like to see change is their lack of organization when it comes to schedule making. The counselors can get backed up with the amount of students wanting to fix their schedules....
