Senior: Yorktown High School is a great high school with excelling programs for learning!! The staff and teachers are majority very helpful and kind and challenge students daily to become better students and people in general. The only negative aspect of the school is the lack of diversity and the common bias against certain groups, students can sometimes show exclusive behaviors, and also the culture of "popularity" is a common theme and social aspect of the school. Senior: Basis' accelerated program will launch children far ahead as far as academics go. The social scene at Basis will not be a problem since we live in a city and kids who want to socialize with new people will always find a way. That being said you will see the same faces in your grade for about 6 whole years due to school size and its inability to let outsiders join after 6th grade. You will know everyone in your class and the name of their goldfish. If you like the idea of that and want your child to be one step ahead of other children when it comes to the college process, this is the school for them. You will be taking high school courses starting in middle school however so do prepare for a bumpy road and a few sleepless nights. EVERYONE who powered through the stress has gotten into a good college and they spend the second half of their senior year working, traveling or interning for an optional senior project.... Senior: Overall a pretty good high school. Its academic programs are excellent, with many different opportunities and extracurriculars for students. However, the environment is very competitive and tired, and I predict it will only worsen as the school looks to go all IB. The teachers and students are, well, people, some are amazing, and some are not. It really is is what you make of it, and who you meet. The school is also good with 504 plans and accommodations for students. The worst is the building, which feels very corporate and dull, not like a school at all, almost like an airport. Parent: Arlington Traditional School (ATS) was the start of many lifelong friendships for my children even though they came from all over the County. It fully prepared them for more rigorous academics in middle school, high school and eventually college. The teachers and the administration were terrific. My son even went back to visit his kindergarten teacher after his high school graduation to thank her for giving him such a great start. They were involved in sports, scouts and the extended day program after school. Fourth and fifth graders participate in music programs with their choice of instruments and a chorus. Every class does a play and it is performed in front of the school at the Friday assembly. Parent involvement is strong and there is a very internationally diverse enrollment. NOTE: My two children were at Arlington Traditional School in its former facility before it moved for the 21-22 school year, so I can't comment on the current facility.... Read 2 reviews

Alum: The county is crazy about test scores, so they really push everyone to take harder math classes, but overall, this school is great. The teachers care a lot about what they do, the area is nice, and the students are always learning and taking advantage of the opportunities there. I spent all of my three years of middle school at Swanson, and although not all of the kids were nice, it gave me an incredibly strong foundation for the rest of my academic career.... Parent: McKinley Elementary School is the reason we moved to this area. It is the most impressive school with surrounding neighborhoods flooded with kids and involved parents. Our kids have incredible enrichment opportunities, phenomenal teachers, a wonderful music program, technology opportunities, and exposure to diversity of all kids including national origin diversity, racially diversity, religious diversity, handicap-able students, socially diverse families, etc. This school feels close-knit and inviting and exceeds our expectations each year.... Works Here: One of the best schools in all of D.C. I’m a young teacher so I just got into the teacher business. But I can say teaching there is amazing. Especially teaching the 7th grader. Alum: Being in Richard Wright was like having a full-time job, it's always something to do surrounded by people who are like family. Anyone who's ever attended knows what I mean when a say it's almost like a mini-government, and to further extend that statement we actually have a school government called the Ambassador club. Which I was a part of as the leading treasure foe two years, definitely one of the best experiences I had at the school. You get lots of exposure to corporations and partnerships they have with the school, so of course my resume was flawless before I even graduated. I would love to get more into the family aspect of Richard Wright because it was so unique. I'm positive some student wouldn't even talk about their schools like this because of the disconnect due to the large numbers of classes. This school definitely gave me the exposure and a broad aspect of how the real-world works. For example, I know that I will have these connections for a lifetime.... Read 30 reviews

Middle School Student: First off, I would like to mention that it is a new building and the facilities are amazing since they are new, the designs of the interior are also fantastic. There are students from all backgrounds in this school, since the students' neighborhood boundaries for Dorothy Hamm are in an area of Arlington where there is a lot of diversity. Students from all races and economical backgrounds go here. The teachers are excellent, as most of them were picked being the finest of the teachers from the other schools in the county. I know some teachers came from Williamsburg Middle School, Arlington Traditional School, and other schools. The safety in the school is 4/5 because all basic safety measures are in place for COVID-19 such as current indoor face mask requirement, hand sanitizer available across the school, and others like individually packaged meals for lunch.
