Parent: The academics are very good, my son was behind and they have specialists that are great. They also have an elementary school counselor - and that is key at this age. I continue to read the student to teacher ratio is 1:16. that is NOT true, nor has it been true for several years. My child is in a 1st grade class that is 24 students to 1 teacher. Junior: Great River School is a Montessori and Is great at encouraging students to take risks, make new friends, and be independent. The curriculum is hands-on and engaging. The teachers and staff are all extremely kind and are very understanding of our needs as students for extensions and different requirements on work. I could walk up to any student in my grade and have a great conversation. The building is old and always seems to be either too hot or too cold which is not so fun. Parent: My child started the school year very shut down, anxious, and overwhelmed due to IEP needs being unmet in traditional public school. They had missed 45% of the previous school year as a result. The staff is welcoming, supportive, and able to tailor education to the child's specific needs rather than apply a cookie-cutter approach. Parent: ISLA has been such an incredible school for our children. Our kids love going to school, the staff is incredibly loving, nurturing and skilled. I’m so impressed with the IB curriculum and the reflection on being an engaged and caring global citizen. I also am so impressed with how strong my daughters’ Spanish has become! What a gift it is to have the ability to communicate in two languages. Also, I have loved the community. People care about each other and the well being of each other’s kids. The leadership it ISLA is beyond impressive and really cares about parent engagement and feedback. I feel like the school really cares about the whole family. Parent: This school is amazing - the teachers, administrators, and students. My son has been attending for 6 years. It is very structured - and can seem overwhelming (imagine being spoken to all day in a foreign language)! But, my son is happy. I think the teachers have high expectations, but are very nurturing and they provide additional help if the student is struggling academically (I know from personal experience). I am so impressed by the dedication of the teachers - they are always available and willing to communicate and partner on plans specific to individual students. With any immersion program, the first couple years are a struggle, as students may fall behind mainstream schools - however, by 5th grade, my son is scoring well above average. Senior: I deeply enjoyed my time at southwest. Many courses were offered, and I was able to pursue my academic interests at a high level. I loved all the teachers and support staff, and admired how COVID safe our school tried to be. My teachers were helpful and supportive, and loved to discuss what we were learning, and not simply lecture. My peers were often driven and kind, and there was a level of diversity within the school that rounded out my education. On the other hand, I do not think that the new administration appropriately values the arts, as they attempted to cut critical departments such as guitar education and dance. Having these art programs are something that gives balance to an educational world otherwise so focused in STEM and business. Parent: My daughter attends SPCPA. Overall we have been happy with her experience there. She really likes her art program (dance). The academics in most of her classes have been comparable in rigor to her former local public high school, with the exception of the math department. Although the math teachers seem to be caring, the model they are using to teach math is unusual and not a good fit for some students. As it is smaller is size to most area public high schools, the amount of academic options or electives is also obviously smaller. Overall I would recommend this school for students who have a strong interest in the arts and are independent enough to handle the urban setting with an open campus. Parent: We moved to Armatage as part of the CDD and have found the community much more welcoming than at our previous school. The teachers have been amazing and dedicated and my child has shown so much growth on all levels after the weirdness of the pandemic. The teachers and administration have been completely available for communication. My child looks forward to attending school every day and has developed great relationships with both peers and teachers, as well as thriving academically. I also love how supportive and caring the school is, from the top down. The pandemic has created unprecedented challenges, from SEL to academic issues, combined with the change of the CDD, I have seen and experienced firsthand how hard everyone at Armatage has been working to help support the students and meet them where they need help. Niche User: Laura Jeffrey Academy is a tremendous school with a learner-centered focus and a positive environment for all students.
