Parent: NEST+M is a warm and nurturing community. The student body is kind. The faculty is great and encourages and empowers students. Students' mental health and well-being are foremost at NEST. Teachers and staff work hard to address the pressure students experience at a school of NEST's caliber, particularly during the college application season. Although NEST+M is known as an excellent stem school, the humanities are outstanding and should get their due! The administration is on top of things and responsive. However, like most city public schools, it can be inflexible and bureaucratic at times. The downsides are the limited athletics and art options. It is also crowded during passing time. Middle school student: My 6th grade experience at Candlewood Middle School is amazing. I got the opportunity to participate in SCMEA, and my average is a 97. I’m learning so much and the school has so many opportunities and clubs. I joined the drama club which I am so excited for. Parent: I used this same review for Baylis Elementary, but it applies to the middle and high school as well....as our older one went through these schools also. Our taxes are a bit higher than most other areas , but we get great schools like this and great families as well. Many of the parents may have accents and speak not-so-perfect English, but their values are the same as all Syosset residents. Schools are more than just teachers, programs and facilities. It's who your child is sitting next to and what they bring to your child's life. When so many of our friends in Queens and Manhattan are stressed and scrambling to find schools for their kids to attend, it's nice to know that we don't have to worry about anything for 12 years. +++We were just notified by email that Syosset will be offering Mandarin ESL to incoming 1st and 2nd graders in 2023. Middle School Student: I love SW almost about everything! Except its food and um, my peers. Some of my male and girl peers are a bit snobby and mean to me, just a few. Some girls there have cliques that do Tik-Tok when there are phone rules and also bully people. The diversity is really good when comparing to race, but not so good during lunch, especially when there's a North and South cafeteria. South has more cliques and "male peers". I believe the curriculum is above average, and that could be because it's in a suburb. Safety is a bit of an issue on the school bus, but it's typical in every middle school. There are 33 clubs this year but I never make it because they begin an hour before my bus comes. The food is okay, but there isn't a lot of choices. That's about it.... Read 4 reviews

Senior: KIPP STAR encouraged me to be a leader when no one was watching. 5th-8th grade I competed with myself as I fought away bad habits to build better ones. I progressed from being a boy who didn't believe in his own potential, to understanding that I can really create the life I desire for myself and for those around me. My years at KIPP STAR encouraged me to dig deep and find my strengths because they make me who I truly am. I grew confidence that fostered a drive to be a better me. As a middle schooler, that meant focusing on what's right and analyzing what was wrong; it meant being mindful so I wouldn't allow the obstacles of life defeat me in my conquests; it meant influencing others to push themselves pass expectations that deemed to be mediocre. Middle School Student: I like most of the things they have taught me in the classes. All of the teachers really do prepare your for when you get into high school and college. I felt like I have learned more from middle school than elementary school. They have very nice culture. There are also clubs and extra help you could attend after school (not sure if they do this in other schools) The food is alright, sometimes it tastes really good, but sometimes it tastes like it was left out over night.... Senior: AFUP is very inclusive in diversity, academically rigorous, and allows you the freedom to choose classes after freshmen year. The teachers are very involved in your academics especially during the college process. There is plenty of emotional support from the counselors and teachers when needed. Everyone knows who you are which works in your favor especially when it comes to leniency for deadlines. For the most part, everyone knows each other from elementary or middle school but the students are very welcoming of students who come from public schools. For the most part, the curriculum is very straight forward and if not, the teachers are more than willing to go over it with you and provide office hours for more individualized support. The school is also highly open and responsive to student feedback; the student body has advocated for more representation in the arts program and the faculty took that into consideration now allowing us to have even more performances throughout the year... Middle School Student: Great school and great teachers. They teach you all the things you need to know at ur level. They have lower classes and higher classes. I’m a student that goes there and every quarter I get high honor roll. Teachers help you and support you in the all the ways they could. There is even extra support classes for students who need extra help during school time, and they’re all for free! Give kids a lot of freedom in school. Teacher also engage with students, they’re not only their teacher but also friends and role model. Teachers also joke around to make classes more fun and not as boring. Parent: Overall the school is good. The faculty are nice and understanding. My two children have had good education here. The college counselors are very active and well organized. The school needs to improve in clubs and afterschool activities. My older one is in high school and there are very few interesting clubs and if your kids are not good in sports, there is not much to do. For middle school, afterschool activities are more interesting and all are free. I am happy that there are uniforms because sometimes kids like to dress inappropriately if no enforcement.
